When Dead Space originally came out I was running a Game Crazy and hyping the game up like crazy.
Everyone who came in loved the game and I kept telling everyone that it was probably the best survival horror game to come out since Silent Hill 2. I Had one customer who came in, young kid probably 12-14 years old and he wanted this game really bad. I explained it to his mother, Told her that it was a brutal game and very scary but she insisted that if her kid wanted it then he could have it. Three hours later she was back in the store demanding a refund and when I asked her why I was told "It's too scary for him." Good times. However, despite all the praise, all the hype, and the fact that every person who I sold it to loved it (one of my employee's beat the game at least 7 times, constantly playing it. Said it was probably his favorite game ever) I just couldn't get into it. I picked it up as soon as we got a used one in, played maybe half way through chapter 1, and never went back. I ended up trading it in as soon as we had a good boost and wrote the game off as chaff. I thought it would have been so much better as a FPS instead of 3rd person. Isaac controlled horribly clunky, having to move the camera and angle it properly to see the holograms of people talking to you. Pulling up the menu and having it off of the screen until you turned right, and for that matter trying to see where you were going, following that stupid blue line, was sometimes horrible and obscured on the HUD. However, 2 years later and $9.99 on Amazon.com convinced me to give it another shot (well, and the hype of Dead Space 2 coming out). Once again, while going through the 1st chapter everything I disliked reared it's ugly head again but I wanted to give it a few hours this time. This time, the more I played the more I liked the game. The scenery, the atmosphere, the noises. I was drawn into the game and the story and every day I couldn't wait to come home and play another chapter. Today - I sat down and banged out chapter 7 through the end, not being able to stop, not being able to put the controller down until it was over. I'm glad that I gave the game a 2nd chance - though the double cross ending pissed me off a bit. But, now I can't wait to dig into Dead Space 2!!! |

haha, I bought the game when amazon had it for $9.99. I played it the first day I got it but barley half way through chapter 1. I didn't play it til my friend my school told me he got a ps3 and got the game and told me he was stuck at the first zero G place. I started to ply it lil by little. I took me over a span of 3 weeks to complete.

Don't you love those type situations where people don't listen to you and then come back expecting you to fix the issue. You would think people would listen to you since you do have experience and stuff, but some people just refuse to listen to anyone... what can you do
I have only tried the demo of Dead Space and couldn't get into it. I'm not really a fan of shooters, but I love horror movies so I was hoping to get into it, but I know it isn't a game I will really enjoy. It is weird because I love horror movies and have no problems watching them, but I don't like all the blood and stuff in games... of course, the fact I'm horrible controlling shooters doesn't help either |

I was thinking about giving it a try as well. I was the same way about BioShock, but I gave it a shock and thought it was great.
Maybe this will be the same way? |

jonathanp makes a great observation. Dead Space is a lot like Bioshock. Both games take place in beautiful settings that are painstakingly put together. Rapture and the USG Ishimura are characters in and of themselves - their walls tell stories and you can only notice this when you actually stop "playing" to appreciate it.
Both games have interesting stories that can be as deep or multilayered as the person playing desires. Bioshock is known for its audio logs, and similarly in Dead Space, players can listen to audio logs and read text logs that offer interesting alternate glimpses into the downfall of the Ishimura. Although these clips are never forced upon the player, they really do help flesh out the story. Also, both games require the player to put in some time before hitting a groove so-to-speak. In Bioshock, the player has to first acquire a number of plasmids / upgrade weapons before he/she can begin chaining powerful attacks and feel like a bad ass. Similarly in Dead Space, the player has to acquire new weapons and the money / power nodes required to upgrade those weapons at a workbench. I just finished playing through Dead Space last weekend and have since read through the Dead Space: Martyr book and played through Dead Space: Extraction for the Wii. Just endured the downloadable Dead Space: Ignition last night in preparation for some Dead Space 2 tonight. |

I did the same thing as well. Picked up the game over a year ago and just sat on my backlog shelf. Up until recently when I went to a friends house and seen him playing Dead Space 2 and I became hooked. I just finished up chapter 7 today and plan on finishing it over the weekend if I have time. It's a great game once you get into it. Hopefully I can 1000/1000 it. I'm gonna go for one gun and epic engineer achievements in one run. Just node the crap out of the plasma cutter.

I'm disappointed in you. How much did it take to get through half of the first chapter? Like.. 20 mins? Then you probably thought you were too good for it.. Sure, yay for you getting through it so many months later but anyone who didn't give it at least an hour to pick up is just not someone who has a good opinion on a game..

@sonicsam - you can be disappointed all you want.
Fact of the matter first impressions are hard to shake and they matter a lot. When I first booted the game up, I disliked the controls, I disliked having Isaac on the screen as he felt clunky. I disliked the HUD. Also, at that point in my gaming life I was not a big fan of shooters and thus I hated the controls even more because it was difficult for me to aim where I wanted to in time to whack off some limbs before the bad guys were on me. So, first impressions are lasting and there was a whole lot that I disliked about the game while playing it, So why bother continuing to play through the game if I already felt that the game sucked? I play games for fun, so if I'm not having fun I'll move on to something else - I don't give myself a time frame to play a game and see if I enjoy it or not. Are you also disappointed in me because I only Gave Dark Void 10 minutes before deciding it was garbage and sending it back to Gamefly? Should I have given that game an hour or more as well? |
