My family is still on for trip to Japan...

As some of you know just last week, I was writing on this blog about preparing for a trip to Japan, then the tragic earthquake happened.
My family has been monitoring the situation, as my bro is an exchange college student over there (he was in Taiwan with my other bro when quakes happened). I have check other sites to make sure that people that I know are safe from the quake. But I know the cleanup for the aftermath will take months if not a couple of years. My family has been pondering if we should scale back our trip, though the original plan was to visit Tokyo, Kyoto, and Osaka. My bros think we could start from Osaka and move east. I am wondering if this is a good time for visitors to go to Japan, as I would like to hear from members that are living in Japan - would tourists still be welcomed in the other parts of Japan that are not severely affected by the quake? Peace to all |

Japan's economy is still in need of all the help it can get. I would still keep the trip on. Aside from the obvious health and emergency rebuilding issues that we will see for the next few months (or years) in regions impacted, the country is not doing well for an industrialized nation. I would still continue the trip with the understanding that the experience may be dampered by the events. I can't imagine the Japanese people being rude and upset over you visiting.

"The Department of State requests all non-emergency official U.S. government personnel defer travel to Japan and urges U.S. citizens to avoid tourism and non-essential travel to Japan at this time. Temporary shortages of water and food supplies may occur in affected areas of Japan due to power and transportation disruptions."

Yeah man, you should consider canceling the trip. I doubt you'll have any trouble with the cancellation of flight and hotel stays given what has happened.

Yes the US government is advising that you not travel to Japan at this time. There a lot of infrastructure issues right now, where even people who weren't directly affected are having to wait/ration for things like food and gasoline, and you being there is only going to complicate that. Unless you have very urgent business there and your Japan relatives absolutely need you onsite for whatever reason, you should postpone your trip indefinitely.

Cheapy said something about black outs on his twittar, to back up @gunm's rationing argument. Then again, I have no idea when you're planning to make the trip so it might not be a problem then.

Some areas are being put through the blackouts in order for the utility company to repair and stabilize affected parts of the grid. In addition, at least one nuclear power plant is in danger of meltdown.

cancel now and go later, they will need your tourism when they have everything under control and you probably can get a better deal then.

OP are you for real? NO ONE, and I MEAN NO ONE should be going to Japan right now unless you are part of rescue efforts. You are :
-Either just plain stupid. -Don't mind being exposed to higher than normal levels of radiation. -Don't mind seeing death and destruction. -Don't mind being in a place that may not have power or clean water. -Don't mind seeing bodies and wounded people. |

With the nuclear situation there, I'm changing my mind about thinking you'd be OK to go in May.

Let's see if it's time to come to Japan or not...

Let's consider a couple things; the country is in mourning, they are going to have trouble feeding/ sheltering the people already there, and the exact state of the reactors is not clear.

after just looking at pictures of the mess I would say wait for sure

It's gonna take MONTHS before tourism is back to somewhat normal levels. The reports of unstable reactors will no doubt turn people away. Heck i wouldn't want to be around that country when the meltdown occurs.

Beyond a doubt cancel now, go later. Don't be foolish.

When is your trip planned for? Obviously you should heed the travel advisory currently in place until April 1st. If you are traveling before then, you may want to seriously reconsider.
My wife and I have a trip planned for the end of May to visit Tokyo & Kyoto. We haven't canceled anything yet - but are very concerned. We are going to continue watching the situation and then make a decision as our departure date gets closer. |

I'd wait until at least April when the power situation will hopefully be back to normal.
