Is iTunes not actually a terribly confusing mess of a program?

I got an iPod Touch about 14 months ago and my experiences with the Touch and iTunes has been bad enough that I'm never buying another new Apple product again. The iPod Touch is one thing, but how clunky and confusing the iTunes interface is just blows my mind because I was expecting a lot more from Apple of all companies. So I'm wondering if I'm just completely missing some obvious options somewhere or if iTunes really is as terrible as I think it is.
The lack of simple drag-and-drop functionality to send apps, music, or videos to and from my Touch blew my mind. I should be able to right-click on any app, song, or video that is in library and have an option to transfer it straight to the device, but I instead have to go to "My iPod" under "This Device" to check or un-check various items to do a massive sync. I'd rather have the minute control to remove an item or two here or there and do a quick transfer, but that doesn't seem to be possible. I also notice a large chunk of my data on my Touch is in the Other category that might be where videos (no videos on it right now) and app updates are stored, but I'm not sure if I can even get rid of that stuff without deleting everything first. If you can simplify or offer help on any of this, that would be great. I don't follow the third-party scene for iTunes replacements, so I'm hoping somebody here might know of a good program that lets me manage my apps more easily. It may not be the best program ever, but Sony's Media Go program for the PSP offers the kind of drag-and-drop functionality so that I can manage my PSP games, saves, and podcasts really easily that I'm looking for my iPod Touch. Thanks. |

I always used Bearshare ($15 a month I think) with windows media player and my Sansa mp3 player. Drag and drop baby!!!
Checkout Bearshare for the free trial if you have a cheap or non-apple player, it's been 2 yrs since I used it but I love it when I had it. Problem is you don't own the songs...damn DRM!!! My cousin had an iPod and hated because it could only be tethered to one pc I remember |

Use Disk Mode for one, and two you can drag your file from iTunes to your device by "dragging" and "dropping" where your iPod touch is listed under device. Also turn off auto sync so you don't have to sync everytime you plug in. People forget iTunes is built for the masses who have no idea what drag and drop is.

You can drag and drop to your iPod touch. Drag from the library to the iPod touch icon in the sidebar of iTunes. It will copy the song to your iPod.
Also, if you turn on manual management, you can drag and drop to it from any computer. It's only tied to a single computer if you opt to "sync". You can choose manual management to go with drag and drop for everything. However, this is still within iTunes. You drag and drop to that icon in the sidebar. |

Thanks for the suggestions. I'll see if they improve things when I need to use iTunes next.

They are the exact same thing, the Windows version just runs a little slower in some parts.

iTunes is a bloated, buggy piece of garbage, at least on Windows. It gives me nothing but headaches.

I use itunes for nothing more than to put music on the ipod that I didn't want, but was forced into getting for lack of a better/cheaper mp3 player with a large hd and unicode support.
It works fine for me, with drag and drop as people mentioned. I don't use syncing because I pick albums from a gigantic folder of music. Haven't had issues with it being slow/bloated yet... |

I'm a big fan of iTunes on Mac OSX simply because I don't want to mess with dragging and dropping files. For me, it just works. Your complaint is a common one though from PC users, so it's not unwarranted. I just like having iTunes take care of everything and syncing so that I don't have to spend time manually messing with files.

I hate Itunes with a passion and almost swore off any future Apple MP3 players until I discovered Copy Trans Manager.
It's a simple drag and drop program in which you can also make playlists, edit title tracks, etc. Best of all it's free. http://www.copytrans.net/download.php |

Itunes is hard to manage/understand? I've never had an issue with it from the beginning. I've had it on all my Windows machines and have had no issues whatsoever.

@Shipwreck A big sync has had weird side effects for me that makes me distrust that it'll do what I want without messing anything up. That includes deleting all of the podcasts or missing games that annoys me at times. So I kind of prefer a little more control and to be able to make incremental improvements to minimize the chances of mistakes.
@Spanky It is when it doesn't work like every other media manager I've ever used. |
