Mortal Kombat - Initial Impressions

I told my wife that I was only going to play Mortal Kombat for an hour or so last night. That turned into three hours, and going to bed at midnight.

When I first heard that Mortal Kombat was coming back I was immediately excited. I remembered waiting in line at the arcade only to put in my quarters and get schooled by the better players, but I still kept playing. When I got my Super Nintendo I sunk hours into MK 1, 2, and 3.

My time spent with MK was only in the story mode. I know that the story of fighting games is usually it's weakest point, but this was actually quite entertaining and really well done. It is basically a retelling of the first three MK games, but Raiden has some knowledge of the future and that things aren't going to end well for Earthrealm. The story is broken up into chapters that focus on a single character. What I found most impressive was that there were no loading screens at all. The cutscense and fights flowed together without a hitch.

The one thing in the game that made me say "it's about time" is the fatality trainer mode. It's pretty much what the name says. You can choose the standard fatality time limit or unlimited time. The fatality is displayed on screen and you can just get to the good stuff rather than waiting until the end of a fight (if you're like me you'd probably mess up and have to do it all again).

I know that I have only scratched the surface of this game, but so far it is quite enjoyable. I have a feeling I'll be playing this one for quite awhile.

I can definitely relate. I picked up the game Tuesday night and figured I'd give it a quick shot. Three hours later, I finally went to bed. Then last night I played for about two hours and decided to do something else, only to return to my PS3 and play for another two hours. @.@

Same boat... Tuesday I played for 4 hours and 2 hours last night. Story mode is kind of cheesy but in a good way.

Sad this game will never see the light of day on a PC.

Dude, I love the fact they even GAVE us a story mode. You can tell they tried to make this game awesome, and it shows!
BTW, I feel the same about the fatality trainer as well

Did not know about the trainer, but I have been checking the story mode via youtube. I want me some MK9.

Beat the Story Mode, loved it. Working on the Challenge Tower, also another great feature of the game. This game is by far exceeding all my expectations, and has features lacking in most of the fighting games I've played as of late. I can't wait to continue the story in the next installment of the revitalized franchise.

Haven't played the new MK yet, but the reviewers are saying MK is now better than SF IV.

The story is awesome and this game is 100x better than sfiv
I'm going to say it, I've never liked MK over SF. But, I picked this up and honestly, this game is wonderful. Way better than SSF4, and infinitely better than MvC3.

I'm not even a fighting game guy, but the amount of content in this game makes it nigh unpassable.

How is this for fighting game newbs?
Loved seeing what really happened to Jax! Got stuck on the stupid defeat 20 Baraka guys tower challenge. Tried it four or five (more like 10 -12) times and gave up. Been playing it for around 9 hours or more so far.

@crunchewy I think it is perfect for fighting game newbs. I haven't played a fighting game in quite some time and I find it to be pretty approachable. Combos are pretty easy and so are the special moves.
