This Anime Blogs theme is about the Samurai and ninja. A little history to lay on you: Most ninja were actually once Samurai. Many Samurai were left without there masters (they are called ronin) after wars, conflicts or disbandment of their respected clans. In many ways a ninjas fighting style is often used to combat the weaknesses of the Samurai. For example many of there swords were blunt to cause swords to break easily when blocked, they used bombs filled with powdered glass, peppers and other nasty things to blind opponents and of course used throwing stars and any means necessary to kill and also escape.
This is a bit different from Samurai because they wanted to do all things somewhat honorable so using cheap shots weren't necessary something they would attempt. If a samurai draws his sword he must use it, thats why frequently you see samurai grabbing the handle because they are threatening to draw their blade. OK OK I'll shut up, I know you guys don't want to learn anything and just want to download whatever I suggest from some piracy site. Be sure to purchase Anime that you like to support the industry. I personally think that if you've watched the entire series of something (illegally or by other means) you should go pick it up on DVD. A few of these series are available free to stream. oh I'm preaching again here it is. This Month's Movie Pick Countless Anime fans have started with this movie and haven't gone back since. Their is extreme gore, violence, sex and almost no real story to follow on. All you need to know is that if you have someone who isn't really into anime (preferably male) invite them over and pop this bad boy in; it will be sure to please. Samurai X: Trust & Betrayal (OVA 4 episodes) This is the OVA (Original Video Animation) remake of the kenshin series. This does not mean that your missing anything by not watching rurouni kenshin, its simply a remake of the beginning of the series. It is about a samurai who kills a man then later falls in love with his fiancé. Many people regard this as one of the best Animes of all time and its frequently on 10 ten lists. You won't be disappointed with the fighting because its some of the best drawn swordsplay to date. There are 6 episodes in all however you only need to watch 1-4 as the story pretty much concludes its self at the end of the 4th. 5-6 are really watered down aftermath episodes and I don't even remember if there was any fighting because I didn't watch them all. Samurai Champloo was created and directed by Shinichirō Watanabe. If you don't recognize the name he is also the creator of the Cowboy Bebop series. Now the Cowboy bebop series is a combination of Space Pirates/Bounty hunters and bebop, which is a style of Jazz, with the bounty hunters being refereed as "Cowboys". Samurai Champloo is a combination of Samurai Warriors and Champloo which means mixture or "Mix," now if you are familiar with hip-hop music you'll know that artists make different mixes which all boils down to this series being about swordsman and hip-hop music. Thats why its called "Samurai Champloo." I personally like this series more then Cowboy Bebop. The blend of hip-hop and sword fighting really combines well and sets up many big laughs for the series. I could recommend this to anyone and the blu-ray is the best way to enjoy it. This anime is NOT for the faint of heart, this is a slow, gruesome and extremely violent. This is a anime that perfectly demonstrates the tone and felling the samurai era. If Berserk were set in Japan this would be the equivalent (for those familiar with that anime/manga). Shigurui is the tale of two samurai who's fate will be pitted against each other in the end. One Samurai is blind and the other only has one arm, this anime asks you, what will be the outcome? It starts off telling the beginning of how two young samurai compete to be the head of their dojo. Both have unique styles and different motivations. I don't want to spoil anything for you but I'll tell you this: This anime goes where other animes dare not go. This is a dark tale and it glorifies the human physic and crosses all the boundaries the Japanese dare not talk about. There is a lot of nudity and gore and the pace is as slow as a snail, which I can understand some people can not stand but it embodies the Japanese Patience and build up. My brother started watching this about 2/3rds of the way in and was completely engrossed without even needing to see the previous episodes. Sadly, this anime only covers about 1/3 of the entire story. I've finished the manga which currently is only out in Japan and I've got to say, it was a EPIC battle that you won't see (you can ask me if you want to know the result). Honorable mention goes to the anime Basilisk which I almost put it however I never actually bothered to finish this series. If you've seen Shinobi:Heart under blade its the same story but more violent. Its a decent anime but even I passed most of it up, look at the trailer if you'd like. So this concludes the Themed Anime Blogs. I'll continue posting these at a later date however I'm going to review some of the anime I've recently watched. As a hint I just finished watching the bakuman anime and I'll be reviewing it with a few others for you possibly in 2-4 weeks. Ciao! |

I found Samurai Champloo to be pretty overrated. It had a good soundtrack and had good comedy to it,but the characters while good had really no development to them and the plot didn't keep me interested.

There isn't much of a plot, they do go through there backstory a bit but I find this series humor makes up for its shortcomings.

I liked Samurai Champloo, but I can understand that it's not really everyone's anime.
I've been wondering about Shigurui. It was recommended to me by Amazon once, but it had mixed reviews, and well, I'm still kind of wondering if I should pick it up. Maybe on Netflix streaming. |

Its streaming everywhere, Don't let mixed reviews stop you from watching it, there is not a thing I would change about that anime its just that normal people can't handle the slower pace and violence.
