Backlog Advice

Hi All,

The last few months have lead me to go on a gaming binge which has lead to me having a HUGE backlog. Just on disc alone i have over 150 games and out of which I have probably beaten 2 or 3 of them if you factor in PSN, XBLA and handheld stuff that total jumps to like 275. I still have no logical reason for getting so many games in such a short span other than they were good deals but my real problem is that I actually want to play most of if not all the games I have. I face the constant problem of trying to figure out what game to play and I either get overwhelmed with the choices and end up watching a movie or I develop some sort of gaming A.D.D. and end up playing 2 or 3 games in the span of a couple of hours but never fully devoting my attention to one game. My question to you my fellow CAG's is how do you all work through your backlogs? Should I just lowball some away to slim down my choices? I have included some pics of my collection just to give you guys a point of reference as to what I have. Thanks all!!

Just develop some sticktoitiveness, as John Madden would say. Choose a game, play through it. Then choose another game from a different genre, and burn through that too. I have your same problem. Just check my blog to see how I'm dealing with it. Its all about perseverance.

Stop buying games, or start playing them and if you aren't enjoying it, sell it!

Yeah, there's no other way to play and beat them except by sitting down and playing them. You could look through your games and see which ones you really could go without playing and get rid of those, but my suggestion would be to find the games that won't take too long to play and knock those out in a sitting or two.

You may also want to look at your multiplayer games and jump into some of those before they lose more players. Otherwise it won't feel like it was worth playing if you don't have a good number of people to play with.

And something that I noticed helps me, find a game other people can get into. I don't mean necessarily for others to play (but that does help) but just something they can get engrossed in also. My wife loves the cutscenes of RPG's so it's easier to sit down and play those with her in the room than, say, Call of Duty for example.

About your gaming A.D.D., some of the games you have can be easy ones to slowly get through. Just pick out some games where you can knock out some multiplayer games or a few levels and work on those repeatedly. So once you get through a stage of say LBP2, go play some multiplayer or work through a campaign level of one of the COD games, then jump into a few rounds of Mortal Kombat or Fight Night. But then don't move to any games until one or all of them are done.
it really looks like you took a picture of my setup, no lie.

I even have the Mass Effect 1 CE in there - LOTR Blue Ray best buy box set thing -

man... your shelf is driving me crazy. Is there any organizational pattern? You got Uncharted 1 on the top shelf, and U2 nowhere near it on the 2nd shelf. Heavy Rain is squeezed between the 2 R&C titles. AHHRGG! (sorry...I have a thing about media organization)

4thhorseman: thanks for that, I think I may actually try some of your pointers

Grrouchie: just means you have good taste lol

nbballard: sorry about the disorganization, I just got those cases and I am working on organizing them, I usually have everything alphabetized to the 2nd letter...it's driving me nuts too lol

lol I picked that up for my son as he thought the guy on the cover looked cool and it was on clearance for 5 bucks at my local Best Buy some time ago...that is one game I have zero intention of playing

The backlog will never disappear entirely. I picked up many games on clearance in June and July and have not touched one of them yet. That is on top of the backlog I had from last year.

I usually sit down to game and just end up putting in BLOPS. With all the camping and connection issues it would probably be better for my sanity if I did move on to my backlog; I actually slammed my controller into the armrest of the couch creating multiple cracks.

If I don't get to them soon, I may just pack up the ones with the worst rating and get rid of them. With so many to play, no reason to keep the bad ones.

Definitely lowball at least 80% of your collection. Honestly, you will never get to even half of those games. Start from the oldest games since the mechanics in them would most likely be outdated and just piss you off these days.
Yah, I had a similar issue. Dumping your backlog and recovering some funds is never a bad idea--we all go down too far a rabbit hole sometime. Be ruthless--look up how long games take to beat online, re-read reviews, etc. and make a commitment to a manageable queue of games (i keep it to 5 now). If you want to still play the games, make a list of them. Remember the fact that by the time you actually get around to playing some of your backlog, the deals you thought you had evaporate because of the inevitable price drops.

Once you've reversed the trend and gotten back to a smaller stack of games, your funds are back in your pocket (or in credit form) and you can feel better about being able to focus on a few games. Commit to them and have a one-in-one-out policy--you will find yourself, in the long run, paying a lot less for games with a lot less backlog guilt. You can always refer back to your list if you find your queue shrinking (always around summer time for me) and buy the games as you can play them.

I have been juggling the idea of a lowball around for like a month now, I am leaning towards doing one but I am torn on what I want to include, I have a few big ticket items that I know for sure would go into it but I am still torn on the rest. I know that this collection needs some trimming, just gotta figure out where to start.
