Masters of the Universe Movie Review - Good Bad Flicks

I have the power! In this week's episode of Good Bad Flicks I look at how to adapt a cartoon into a live action film the right way. Masters of the Universe is a cool action sci-fi film that would be a good movie on its own, even without the tie in to the famous toy line.
![]() Masters of the Universe The movie is available to rent from Netflix but isn't streaming. You can stream the entire run of the cartoon though. You can buy the DVD cheap on Amazon and other retailers. |

I recall being so very upset that this movie wasn't like the cartoon at all.
I hope that they do get this Grayskull thing pushed through, but there have been rumblings about it for years with no apparent progress. Sadly, Hollywood always seems to think they can do better and I'm sure, even if they do make a new movie, they will totally screw everything up. "What? Spider-man has 40 years of successful history and has built of a base of millions of fans?" "Screw that, we can do better. We're Hollywood executives!" "OK. How about organic webshooters?" "Brilliant! That's exactly like a spider!" "Wait... So he fires these webs from his ass and then..." "Woah, wait a minute. Let's not be so realistic. How about we make the webs fire from his wrists instead." "Well then why not just keep the original design that has worked for the past 40 years." "I said we can do better. Good day to you sir." "But..." "I SAID GOOD DAY!" |

Great as always - 5:09 was hilarious, and great humor abounds! I agree with dv8 - the worst part of the movie was the change of villians. No Trap-Jaw? Fail.
And the sequel begat Cyborg? No kidding? |

@dv8mad Hollywood execs 99% of the time have no idea what they are doing. Your depiction is pretty accurate. Another factor is simply money. In the case of Spider-Man they went organic web shooters so they could sell web shooter toys. (even though they could have sold them anyway)
It is usually their inflated egos that make them think they can do it better. The original script was on Eternia more but they still ended up on Earth. They even had some scenes beneath Castle Greyskull and some shots outside of Snake Mountain. She-Ra made a cameo and they hinted at the Snake Men. All of that was cut for budget reasons. Underneath Greyskull they found an American Flag and had a flashback showing that astronauts had been to Eternia and He-man's mother was human...I'm kind of glad they cut that out. @Don Chubo Thanks! This one was a lot of fun. Looking at Saurod and then realizing how easy it would have been for them to include Trap-Jaw is just frustrating. I don't fault Goddard, he was polite when he spoke about the movie but I'm sure it must have been hell for a first time director to not only deal with the producers but also Mattel. Everything had to be signed off on by Mattel before they could do anything, which I'm sure added to the film going over budget. I know right? I was pretty shocked when I found out about Cyborg myself. Talk about something coming out of left field. I kind of wish they were able to make MoTU 2. Skeletor on a post apocalyptic earth? Yes, please! Pyun has a knack for making something look far better than what you would think he could do within the budget, so chances are MoTU 2 could have been something special. |

I can kind of understand that Mattel wouldn't want a recurring character to be killed, but yeah, the new characters were pretty terrible. Given that the movie flopped, I wonder how those new characters' toys sold?
Couldn't agree more about Albert Pyun. I've seen a lot of dumping on him, but come on - he's done some decent stuff, and usually with no money. Seriously, Cyborg is cool, Sword and the Sorcerer - cool, and Mean Guns? Hell yes. Look at the guy's credits - anyone who's a fan of lower-budget fare can likely look at his body of work and see something they like(d). He's worked with a lot of good B and C-level actors, and anyone that gets to work with Shannon Whirry is someone I am jealous of. |

I wonder how many original characters they had planned for the sequel? I'd love to get my hands on the original script but no luck in finding one yet. The new toys had a low print run and sold poorly so there aren't very many of them out there. I was talking to an "expert" and he told me Blade and Saurod where the ones most wanted.
Pyun is great. He's made some of my favorite movies of any budget. (Knights and Nemesis) Mean Guns kicks a ton of ass, plus Sword and the Sorcerer is better than almost all fantasy films of the time. He knows how to make a million bucks look like 10 million and can shoot action scenes with the best of them. I think I may have to do a Albert Pyun tribute special. Oh, and I knew you had good taste before but this cements it. Shannon Whirry I frikkin love. On top of the fact that she is just a natural beauty, she has no problem showing off said beauty in most every movie she's made. I think I watched Private Obsession about 192 times. |

Shannon was definitely it - but look at her IMDB page. From those recent-looking photos, she's still it.
I used to work nights part-time at a video store and would get into trouble regularly for taking out those god-awful "Coming Attractions" videos (that would loop maddeningly) and putting in other movies to watch. I have to admit that I've seen Private Obsession more than a few times myself. There was a time I was watching it at the store and the weird creeper guy that would rent 8-10 movies every weekend (always the "erotica" stuff), came in and watched a bit of it. He asked if he could rent it, and I'm like "Er....no. I was told the tape was damaged, so I have to check it out." Poor guy had to go get something else for the weekend spank bank. And I'm all for a Pyun tribute. After that, maybe a "Babes of GBF" retrospective! |

She still looks terrific and has something about her that sets her apart from the standard generic blond.
Ugh, I know what you mean with the coming attractions videos. I used to date a girl who worked at blockbuster and often I would hang out there. (I was friends with some of the other workers and we did enough dumb stuff that I could probably make a movie out of it...kind of like the movie Waiting, only at a video store) Anyway, those videos were just terrible. Filled with these puff interviews and family friendly movies. We used to swap the videos out with Full Moon stuff and other movies. (although she wasn't too happy when I threw in my personal copy of Nekromantik) Ew. There were a few guys that would come to her store like that. The funny thing was they would get the "dirty" movies like Undercover, Night Eyes and such but since it was blockbuster it was the "blockbuster cut"...which meant that most of the nudity was removed, hence removing the entire point of the movie. I think many people were upset by this but were too embarressed to complain. I think a Pyun tribute is in order. That sounds like a good one to start of 2012 with. (if I can get it together in time) A babes of GBF is a great idea! |

I remember watching this as a kid in the theater and being entertained.
