Do you buy music?

I like to support content creators but, I have a hard time justifying buying music. I like to get the highest quality music possible. So in that scenario I have 2 options I either A)buy the cd and rip it to my harddrive or B)download it either legally or illegally. Option A is a pain in the ass. And if I was going to buy the cd I would definitely not be buying it new since they practically give away used cds on Half.com. In that case the artist still doesn't see a cent even though I bought the cd. Option B is much more convenient. Now let's weigh the download options. I can either get a 256kbps mp3 on amazon or I can get a 320kpbs mp3 via torrents. I have no problem paying $1 for a song but why should I pay for something when I can get a higher quality product for free? Also, in the future when there are mp3 players or phones with over 500gb hdds on them I won't feel bad for wasting a ton of money on mp3s when lossless on a portable actually becomes feasible. I personally think that the music industry is going to go the podcast route. Where you give away your shows hoping that when an artist comes to town people show up for the concert. I know that I personally listen to a lot of podcasts and when I have the opportunity to support the people on the podcast I go to their live shows. For example I saw Adam Carolla live in Chicago earlier this year because I was a fan of his podcast. So what about you guys do you buy music or do you just download it through other means? Spotify might be a good solution but I listen to my music while roaming around town and what happens if you lose cell signal?

why don't you combine your options.
I as well want higher quality product. So, whether I buy the CD or the mp3's (off of Amazon) - I'll then turn around and download a better audio quality version if it is available. I try to support the bands I really like and purchase their music. Too many people just grab it for free and never buy anything because they feel they are entitled based on whatever lame excuse they provide. |

Used to pirate, now use Zune Pass. If for some strange (very rare) reason I can't get the music I want on that service, I pirate it.

Last time I bought a CD was in 2009.
I don't listen to a whole bunch of different stuff, so I've only pirated about 20 songs total in the past 12 months, almost all of which are from Anime. I'll buy CDs if I come across an album I like at the store for a good price, but I won't go out of my way looking for it nor will I buy it online when I can just google "*Song_Name* MP3", wait 12 seconds and download. Alternatively, Youtube has pretty much everything. Just don't watch anything with Vevo tagged at the end of the channel name. |

I buy vinyl records if any exist of the artist I enjoy listening too, if not then I go with legally purchased Mp3s. Now if I find an artist who made physical releases but are very difficult to track down or find online to purchase them then I pirate. I also pirate Bsides and/or covers of artist who music I have purchased legally since some releases tend not to include the bonus tracks.

Grouchie that seems like a good idea. Buy the song for $1 and when eventually it's time to switch to flac or if I want a higher bitrate mp3 get it from torrents.

yeah - I treat music like Video Games.
If I own a legal copy of it then I have no issues re-downloading it at a later date (or the same date or whatever) for better quality. Also - to add to my thoughts and then agree with someone else - As I sit here listening to the new Avenged Sevenfold cd - which I did not pay for. I will also use Pirating as a way to judge whether or not I'll like a CD. When I was young I had lots of friends into music and could listen to anything I wanted without having to buy. Now that I'm older that doesn't apply any longer - So I will download the Album and get a feel for it. If I like it then I'll pony up and buy it. (Sometimes I wait for a while until Amazon has it on sale for $5.00 though) and if I don't like It I delete it. And, going with 200STM - If I own an album but there were like 13 different releases and some of those had an extra song or two, I will Pirate those songs if I have no other way to get them, especially older stuff which is not available for MP3 download. |

You could buy a CD but still download the lossless/better quality files too. That way, you're still supporting the artist, and also getting the high quality music. I like to support the artists as much as possible since pirating has taken away around 50% of the music industry's revenue. Plus, having a physical product is always better in my opinion, I never buy from iTunes or anything like that.
