Need Some Advice!

So here's the deal. I got an interview at a company on Sept 22nd. The interview went great and the person I was going to be working for said I'd find out in two weeks. Two weeks came and went and I called her and she said that they had interview someone before me and were waiting for them to respond to an offer; the person then told me that I'd find out the Wednesday following (the 12th). I called her on the 12th and got the voicemail, so I left one then and one on the 17th, since I couldn't get a hold of the person.
On the 20th, I received this email saying the person's voicemail was wonky and they didn't get my messages until then. They also said that the group has offers pending on two other candidates and didn't get approval on two additional job requisitions. Other than that, the person said they couldn't give me a more definitive answer at the time. So now I don't know what to do. I've been applying everywhere, but noone around has jobs for recent graduates even for MSEE. I'm tempted to call the person and say how much I want/need this job as rent and bills aren't cheap around here. What's the best way to deal with this? I've been really patient, but I haven't gotten any other interviews besides this one. Help me out CAG! |

It sounds like they have two other people higher on their list, maybe more before you. As a fellow graduate also looking for a job, welcome to the club.

I would keep calling to check but don't say anything about I need this to pay the bills or whatever. Checking in is fine though and lets them know you are still interested.

I know how it goes. I had plenty of jobs never call me back, send me rejection emails, and so on. I have had over 15 interviews and no luck. I just keep moving forward applying.

I know I have gotten labeled as a smartass and prick due to alot of my replies to blogs, but I will be serious here.
As someone who has now been unemployed for over 2 years and has sent out well over 10,000 <yes seriously TEN THOUSAND> resumes and applications only to have actually gotten 8 face to face interviews, I am telling you not to count on this job. I have received thousands of the generic "Don't call us, we will call you" replies, the "Upon further consideration" replies, to no reply at all. No company that seriously needs to fill a position is going to wait over 1.5 months do do so. Chances are the person that is your contact liked you, however the company decided to go with someone else and they don't want to be the person to let you down. I know it is tough. Trust me, I know. Being a single father who is now once again in a custody battle and my daughters mom is trying to use my unemployment longevity against me, having no income sucks ass. Fortunately for me I am living with and taking care of my Grandparents, which itself is basically a full time job due to my grandfather having alzhiemers. My best advice to you is to basically move on from this position and just keep trying. I know thats the same shit you have heard before, but in all honesty, it is all you can really do. Maybe if you are younger and have no real ties to the area you live in you can explore opportunities in another city like TMK did. Good luck to you no matter what you do though. This economy is a cunt and CAG's never ending deals make it no easier. |

Google Sites is what I use to host my online portfolio. It's free. PM me if you want to check it out. #2 piece of advise: bring in projects you can power on and explain how it works to the interview. |

What Spyder said. Never assume you have a job until you have the offer from them. I have seen many times where people I know are told they have a position only to have that not turn out for any number of reasons. You're setting yourself up for heartbreak.
Also, if they are treating you like this now how do you think they would treat you as an employee? You could probably expect more of the same indifference. Probably better that you go somewhere else. Don't limit where you apply, try something you're not familiar with. Some places look at your school records and hire on your ability to learn. |

Go ahead and call, maybe once every two weeks. But do not play the need/guilt card--if they were going to hire you, it may send up a red flag about what kind of employee you may make. |

Thanks for the stories, guys, it definitely puts things in perspective. I've been looking, it's just this was the only interview I've gotten thus far. Hopefully, things look up soon!

Sounds like you are getting the run around. Be patient. Meditate. Improve yourself. Don't waste the time you have even if you aren't working. Find your balance and harmony and you will find what you are looking for.
