I've been with HSBC for about 5 years. I am now thinking about switching. I'm not really sure where to go. Any suggestions?

Try a local credit union, if you are a student see if your college has one.
http://www.findacreditunion.com/ Generally Credit unions have the best interest of the members as it's goal, vs the best interest of making profits/stockholders for banks. |

x3 a credit union. When I first had money I was with Bank of America and they told me the only fee free account they had was if I kept a minimum balance of $1000. My credit union told me all I had to keep was $25. With no fees, they would just close my account if it dropped below $25.
They also gave me a car loan and credit card with little credit (Well, what little credit I had back then). Also if you do mess up, fees like NSF and the overdraft are usually a lot less. |

Credit unions. I've been hearing good things about USAA. You might want to check them out.

I'm not sure what to recommend for you since I'm looking for a new bank as well, but I can tell you one thing from experience: Do NOT go with Bank of America. I'm thoroughly tired of their sh!t, changing banks as soon as I find one that won't try to rape me like BoA been trying to (and has once already, twice if you count the recent attempt).

Credit Union or other small local bank. National banks will just try to rape your wallet with fees.

Small local banks have a lot of benefits. It really depends what your ultimate goal is with a bank. Local banks generally have competitive rates, lower service charges, and will work hard for your business. Personalized service is not something you generally get from most large banks. I have had bad experiences with some of the local credit unions, though because of banking laws, they are able to offer better rates typically because they don't pay tax.

I really like Citibank. They always follow the rules and they never break the law. I get really upset when the government tries to strangle job creators like Citibank.

If credit unions had the same caliber of online banking as BoA, I would be all for it. Every credit union website in my neck of the woods looks like a high school kid threw it together.

Take a look at Ally Bank. Been with them since May and even though it's an online bank, they got the highest interest rate for savings and interest checking. They give cash back instantly when you use your debit card at participating places and reimburse you monthly with no limit if you have to pull out cash from any ATM machine. Just recently, they introduced e-depositing. I scan in a check and funds get deposited the next day. Good luck.
