Why must you always kick me in the nuts, PS3?

I picked up a 360 on release day in Japan. I wanted a PS3 on release day, but the price was simply too high, so I decided to wait a bit on it. I actually ended up caving in very early during that first Black Friday as I just happened to be in the U.S. and Wal-Mart was giving 10 free blu-rays with the PS3.
The system itself came with Motorstorm and, I'll admit, it was fun for a couple days, but it become boring after that. For racing games, I really prefer Kart racers or Burnout (real Burnout, not that Paradise crap!). Basically, for the first year and a half of PS3 ownership, I didn't do much but watch blu-rays on it. Because of that, the 360 was always my gaming system of choice. Over the years, the PS3 has gained ground with some exclusives that are right up my alley (mostly RPGs) and, of course, the ever-present blu-ray playback capabilities. I see in just about every thread mentioning PS3 or 360 that people are almost always on one side or the other. I'll be honest, I try my absolute best to be middle of the road, but EVERY SINGLE TIME I feel like i get to the point where PS3 could actually be, IMO, on the same level as the 360, some stupid thing happens. It really is like, just when I start liking PS3 a lot, it hauls off and kicks me in the ding-ding. First, I was really getting into the PS2 games that I had missed out on and had also began playing Resistance, which I was enjoying. Of course, my PS3 started screwing up and, in the end, I had to buy a new one after they had removed B/C. That left me with no way to play my PS2 games for a few months and it soured me on PS3 for a bit. I finished up Resistance, but I was right back to having a gaming system (360) and a blu-ray player again. Quite awhile later, I was warming up to PS3 again thanks to Sony's excellent move of not having region coded games. It meant that, although I had to pass on many games due to MS's refusal to get over the stupid random region coding of games, I could pick up multi-platform games on PS3 without having to worry about compatibility issues. I had a couple games that just didn't play as well as I had hoped, and then I found that the 360 version often were better, and I don't simply mean visually - because if that were the biggest deal, I would not play PS2 games - but even in basic operation like framerate and loading. Don't even get me started on the mandatory installs. "Oh, I would like to play this new game!" *Puts it in and waits for half an hour. ![]() I ended up starting to research just about every game and hope for a region free release on 360 rather than picking up the safe PS3 release early. Still, lots of good (to me) exclusives were coming out on PS3 so, although it had once again lowered it's status, it continued to once again improve it's standing slowly. Then there was the hack and Sony not coming out and saying anything meaningful for much too long and I was soured on them yet again. Still, I understood it happens. They just had a bunch of idiots thinking they could somehow cover for it. Understanding that a bunch of morons not communicating effectively isn't a reason to hold a grudge, I have been, again, building up a case for Sony to become my #1 machine... Last night, my wife wanted to watch a blu-ray. When I turned on the system, she happened to notice there was a trailer for MiB3. She said she liked those movies and asked me to click it. I went ahead and did so, only to be told I needed to perform a system update... To view a trailer... OK, I went ahead and began the system update which, of course, took almost 20 minutes to download. ![]() Then it had to search for the update it had just downloaded (even my wife said "why are you searching? You just got it!") and then install. another 5 minutes. So annoying that we had spent almost 30 minutes updating simply to see the trailer. But, the worst part is, when I clicked the trailer, it said that it was not available for my region. Are you KIDDING me? A trailer can't be watched because I live in Japan?!?! I thought I was pissed, but my wife was even more so. She told me I should just play 360 and leave the PS3 alone. I talked her out of it and we still watched the movie, for the record. But, the point is, my wife, who knows nothing about games, was so annoyed just with what she has seen of the PS3 over the years, that she told me to go to the other system! Why won't you let me love you PS3? Why do you have to be so bassackwards all the time? |

Hmm, what sort of internet speed do you have at your place? I wonder if that could be part of the issue. Are you hardwired? wireless? do you know the NAT settings on your ps3?

@kube00 - He lives in japan, internet speed is not a problem for him.

I'm pretty confident the trailer not playing on the PS3 isn't sony's doing, but the people who are releasing the movie.

josh - Nah, he knows I wouldn't crap on Sony.
kube - Super fast, hardwired, all settings are and have been good to go. It's just always slow here when it comes to Sony updates. b.o. - Of course, but having to do the update to even view (or attempt to view) the trailer was what I thought was weird. I mean, I was already signed into PSN and everything! |

Updates are one of the reason my PS3 doesn't get played as often as it should. I, admittedly, don't get to play games as often as I would like, so some updates here and there are expected. However, I have yet to turn my PS3 on (even within a short amount of time from the last time I played) and not be required to install updates. It is one thing to have updates to get new features and things that I may want, but to be forced to do all these updates before I can play anything or do anything is annoying. The updates are always extremely slow and half the time the system can't connect to the internet. So, when I only have 30 minutes or so to play games I usually stay away from the PS3 knowing I will probably be spending more time than that installing updates.
I really do like the PS3, I think it is a really great system, but it just gets annoying that you can't just sit down and play a game once and a while without having to sit through all the updates. |

I don't see why everybody is complaining about updates, granted I have loads of free-time compared to the average CAG. I mean, I have plenty of other things to do while the occasional update installs, so it kinda sounds like all you guys are sitting in front of your TV counting the seconds.
This brings me to a vital question; why didn't you just go on Youtube using a computer or one of them fancy phones with video playback? |

YouTube also has region locked trailers, so nothing new there. In my gameshare group, the host (Canadian) linked trailers for psn games that were out in the freaking US, yet the trailer was not authorized for American viewers.
I also install every game I play on 360 and it takes about the same amount of time as a standard ps3 game install (with the exception of gt5, which is retardedly insane), so I don't see too big of an issue there either. I dunno about updates though. I know the video stuff has its own updates separate from the standard firmware updates but I don't do that on my ps3 so I have no idea. Its just games for me. |

There are some great exclusive games on PS3 but in terms of interface and overall user experience the 360 is miles ahead.

I completely agree with this. A couple of weeks ago, I wanted to redeem my voucher for Portal 2 on Steam. Started up Portal 2, hit Select, and then because I had to log in, it forced an update, even though the update was irrelevant to what I was doing. Wait, restart, restart Portal 2. So annoying.
It's the combination of the forced "You must do them now" updates combined with the slow download speeds that turn what should be quick, simple things into prolonged agony. |

I do not agree with this at all. I prefer the simplicity and style of the XMB by a huge margin. The 360 interface is trying WAY to hard to cater to the typical, non-techie consumer. This pretty much goes for most interfaces today now though, and I hate the trend. From what I have seen of the Vita, it looks like Sony may be jumping on this bandwagon as well. |

@GaveUpTomorrow
Completely agree. I've never understood how the XMB is such a huge cluster everyone makes it out to be. It has always been faster, cleaner, and less frustrating than the 360's set up is. Hell, I even like the PS store more than the 360's. |

I always liked my 360 better, 2 main reasons.

I just recently made the switch from being an all time sony girl to buying an xbox 360 - so far, I'm impressed.

Dv8mad, I have to agree with the dumb updates. I usually try to play games (a little old than the mainstream releases) and I am always required to update also for games/other media they require me to update. I am currently not in the US (I am in EU right now). I live in a place that has not the best internet so I have to manually update the PS3 and hope the game updates are small :(
I will say beyond Xbox 360s constant RRODs with my Pro (60GB) I have had no serious problems with updates or watching trailers for games/movies. There is usually a region block to watch certain trailers for games/movies. I usually have to use VPN to watch them. However, the PS3 is a good system but I think they need to revamp their servers to provide fast broadband service for its users. I would like to use it today but I feel that they will make me to a 'wonderful' update. |
