What song covers do you think are actually better than the original version? The 2 that are most obvious to me are the Guns N Roses version of Knockin on Heavens Door as well as The Marilyn Manson Version of Personal Jesus.

David Bowie - Pablo Picasso

This is a little unfair because it's better than the original version of every other song.

Jimi Hendrix - All Along The Watchtower
personally I love songs that get remaid - especially 80's songs.

MM's Personal Jesus is great.
Dopes "You spin me round (like a record baby)" makes me smile a lot
Lets see... Not sure if they're better but some of my favorites are:
Whiskey in the Jar - Metallica
Turn the Page - Metallica
Black Betty - Spiderbait
Hurt - Johnny Cash
Ring of Fire - Social Distortion
Mad World - Gary Jules

Both are awesome, but I prefer J Dilla's version of Think Twice compared to Donald Byrd's version. He took it to such a different level, pretty amazing.

Here is what comes to mind:
Hallelujah - Jeff Buckley
Everybody Knows - Don Henley
Maggie's Farm - Rage Against the Machine
Renegades of Funk - Rage Against the Machine
People are Strange - Echo & the Bunnymen
L.A. Woman - Billy Idol
Don't You Think This Outlaw Bit's Done Gone Out of Hand - James Hetfield

Isn't the Aretha Franklin version of Respect the obvious choice?
But you guys are all full of shit about Personal Jesus. The Depeche Mode version is hands down the best version of that song.
Lots of the Johnny Cash songs from his various American recordings could make this list, but One has to be mentioned here. So much better than the U2 original.

I forgot, anything by Me First and the Gimme Gimmes is awesome.

Breaking Benjamin: Who Wants to Live Forever? It's a tribute to Queen, and while it may not be better, it definitely stacks up.

Cab's cover of Disturbia.

I second ackbar7. Depeche Mode's version of Personal Jesus is also my favorite.

Also Rage's Ghost of Tom Joad... Bruce Springsteen sucks.

Paint It Black - Vanessa Carlton
Enjoy the Silence - Lacuna Coil
Dreams - The Corrs
Don't Dream It's Over - Sixpence None the Richer

Plus a lot of songs on Glee are better than the originals.

I love me some (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction covered by Cat Power.

Also, Snake River Conspiracy's cover of The Cure's Lovesong.

The Pixies covering Jesus and Mary Chain's Head On

Of course you have to include Aretha Franklin's respect, a cover soo good that it is considered her signature song.

In a similar vein, you have to mention Whitney Houston's cover of Dolly Parton's I Will Always Love You. Its such a great cover that Dolly has publically stated that it is now 'Whitney's song' not hers.

Additionally, I like Rascal Flatts version of Life is a Highway better than Tom Cochrane's original (though not by much).

And while not *better* than the original, I appreciate the Rage Against the Machine cover of the hip-hop classic - Eric B & Rakim's Microphone Fiend
