HELP: Starting a website, need registrar/hosting suggestions. |

UPDATE:
Full refund from Bluehost is in process. The domain name has been released so I am (unless someone else registers it) free to "re-register" it. I am unsure if I should go for separate registrar and web host or someone that does both; I definitely want private registration so personal info does not appear on whois. The site will be blog format so the web host should be Wordpress compatible. I would like also like to generate some revenue (a lot would be great but that's not realistic starting out). I have used 1&1 for years now and they're fantastic. Great uptime, tech support, and features. They may not be the cheapest (I really don't know if they are nowadays, TBH), but I certainly feel I get my money's worth.
Also, if you want to keep your domain name, transfer it before you close your Bluehost account. You will need to deactivate private registration first; hopefully Bluehost has help docs telling you how to take care of the rest. |

I checked out the site. It's hard to tell what the prices are (what is "my website" compared "web hosting")
I do want to keep my domain name, but if it is possible to get full refund I can always "rebuy" with a different registrar. is it possible for you to tell me your site so I could check it out (if not that's okay). do you have any ads etc to generate any sort of revenue? |

I have no idea what "My Website" is; I just have regular Linux hosting. 1&1 has a decent number of different packages.
As for the domain name, I'm not sure how that would work with Bluehost. Usually, when you register a domain name on its own and transfer it, you're out your fees for the year at the old host and have to pay them again at the new one. I only run ads on two of the sites I host: The FFVII Citadel (fan site I've been on the staff of for roughly a decade; took over hosting duties in 2004) and Brain Scrap House (personal gaming blog; uses Wordpress). For awhile, when Advent Children and other FFVII spinoffs were popular, the Citadel's ads generated enough revenue to fully pay for itself; the extra profits went toward Child's Play donations, contest prizes, and the site's emergency fund. Right now, neither site makes much, but I can afford to keep them running even without the ads, so I don't mind. For me, my sites are hobbies more than anything else. |

I've heard great things about hostgator.com that's what my next site will be hosted on. Right now I'm using hostica and it's not bad. Costs about $12 a year and in your admin panel you can install wordpress quickly and easily.

blueshinra, we are aiming for something like your blog site.
"If you cancel within 3 days, you will get a full refund and the domain name will be released." I hope this means I can just register the exact same domain with another registrar. The domain registration was "free" (charge and a minus of the charge on bill), but I did pay fee for private. If I don't get the full refund I'll call them up again or go to my credit card company. So do you use 1&1 for both domain registration and hosting? I've actually visited FFVII Citadel a bit when I was looking up info about FFVII AC as well as when I started playing the FFVII (around 2005-6)! Chlorox, is there a reason you plan on using hostgator for your next site instead of staying with hostica (their price is pretty cheap!)? |

Yeah, I use 1&1 for both; my hosting package includes five free domains, so why not, right? I still have a domain or two with GoDaddy, but I'm looking to transfer them to 1&1 soon.
And cool to hear, re: FFVII Citadel |

I also have a blog outside of CAG. So I bookmarked this post by zenprime
TLDR: mentions atlasnetworks deal for hosting. My own hosting is about to expire so I'm thinking of trying out the deal. Good thing abt wordpress is it's so portable when changing providers. Just export your site to your HDD. |

The only reason I'm looking at moving over to host gator is so that I can sell hosting services to my clients and make a little income after developing their website.

DaBoltz, do you any anything about atlas? I clicked through and each of the options
cost $10.95/yr (shouldn't the last option be free?). There is also a $1 charge even after the code. Regardless 1 year free and $1 per after or just $1 per year seems too cheap so am a bit skeptical. Chlorox, is that "reselling" (I've been coming across while searching about websites)? Do you make money with your own personal site (hosted with hostica)? |

@Gamer SDP. No, I haven't done the transfer yet. I'm still paid up with my current hosting 'til end of Feb. Since the Atlas deal didn't have an expiration date (apparently), I thought I would wait til then (or throw away $ I pre-paid, LOL). I totally share your skepticism. But I figured an event like PAX, Atlas just might eat it (profits) to gain a foothold in a competitive marketplace.
But it looks like the code's not working? I'll just re-up with my current host then (wordpress.COM). Paid $26/yr for registration WITH hosting. (Paid extra to not have "www.[domain].wordpress.com"), which personally I dislike. |

Yeah couldn't find anything useful about atlas/arvie network.
the code takes 10% off certain services according to the message but didn't do anything to the charges since they were basic services like hosting. also no free year from what I could tell which it said I need the code for. I though wordpress.com was free. and do you mean you pay $26/yr to wordpress.com for hosting and a real domain name which redirects yourdomainname.wordpress.com to yourdomainname.com ? One of my former teachers has a wordpress.com blog but used godaddy to make it a "real" site. when I type the sitename.wordpress.com it redirects to sitename.com |

Not sure if it's reselling exactly. Basically with hostgator I pay them to allow me the ability to sell hosting to people from my site. My personal site on hostica does not make me money. The purpose of that particular site is for me to showcase and sell my web development services and really at $12 a year it's hardly an inconvenience.
In regards to wordpress I may be wrong but I think simply removing it from the wordpress folder would fix a lot of the www.domain.wordpress.com issues. Not 100% as I've just recently started working with wordpress but I've been coding websites for a couple of years now. |

@Gamer SDP: Yeah, I'm paying extra to delete "wordpress" from the URL. Envisioned, at the time, that I'd write everyday. Build a 'following' then eventually start monetizing (if that's a word). Well...I haven't posted there since BF3 released, LOL.....I think I'll just revert back to the free option and have the extra URL typing.
