As I've continue my comic immersion I came across Irredeemable. I've heard positive snippets about it prior to picking it up and decided to download volume one last week. Mark Waid does an excellent job in crafting a story that proposes a most dangerous question: What if the most powerful hero on the planet became its worst villain? As I ventured into the first volume, which collects issues 1-4, I was quickly introduced to the horror of having a Superman-like superhero, the Plutonian, as your enemy. As the remaining heroes scramble to find a way to stop the Plutonian they also seek to solve the mystery as to why he went rogue in the first place. Within the first volume I have found myself quite drawn to the situation that Waid has created, and the art is well drawn, though I'll admit I am biased when I attempt to compare Peter Krause and Jon Cassaday's work to the seasoned artists employed by Marvel and DC. That aside I highly recommend this title and recommend you take advantage of the current comixology sale on Irredeemable, which ends tomorrow. At the very least give the first issue a try for 99-cents. If you prefer a physical copy volume one is available from Amazon for $9.99, you can try to find the first issue at your local comic shop or midtowncomics.com.

I may consider this one before tomorrow, thanks for the heads up

I have been wanting to jump into this so bad. Heard it was ending soon-ish which is a shame.

How do you like the other Waid book that goes side by side with this one?
gr8asianman's Avatar
@Ed: Do it!

@Joshnorm: I haven't read his other book yet, waiting for it to go on sale. I know it's ending in the next couple issues, part of the reason I think it's on sale, but I'm glad this one won't drag on. It's a fantastic story, but considering the initial premise I don't think that he could weave numerous sagas into his world to prolong its life.

Oh but its Waid he can do it. Incorruptible is proof that it can happen, I mean yes its an outstanding premise and I am glad he has an end game but it seems like he might have done it because he is picking up more work at the "major" studios...

I'd definitely like to check this out, but trying to decide between digital or physical. I'm a comixology newb. Can anyone give me the pros and cons of it? My Kindle Fire is crying out for some sweet new content, but I haven't tried digital comics yet. Thanks for any advice or tips, and thanks very much for the heads up on the series and the sale, gr8asianman.

I downloaded the preview and read it and decided to jump in. I bought all 35 issues .

@Danimal, the pros for me have been due to physical space. I don't have much room for all these comics so I went the digital route. Not to mention portability, I read the comics on my way to work and during my Lunch hour, also sales like this one are great. From what I've read most shops don't offer older issues of comics so it's great to be able to buy older issues when I want (provided its available on Comixology).

@joshnorm You're right. I read a a couple more issues since my last post and I was surprised how it's played out thus far without loosing that initial hook.

@Danimal I'm a big fan of Comixology thus far, but I'll start with the cons I've come across: drm (not a huge issue in my opinion, but I know some people rage about), no noticeable discount for purchasing new titles unless you factor in gas and taxes and you need a device or computer to read your comics. Pros: portability (I read my comics between my iPhone & iPad, great when you're waiting and have nothing to do, and don't have to worry about rebagging them), large catalog (there are tons of titles availavailable though I wish that Dark Horse was a partner and didnt have their own app), constant sales (Marvel Monday where they feature titles for 99-cents and they have other weekly specials like the Irredeemable one going on currently) and price drops (i.e. Most of DC's New 52 titles drop a dollar when the new issues come out). Those are the key points I can think of I hope you find it helpful.

@Ed__ Yeah, that's basically how I was once I read the first couple issues.

Thanks for the info on Comixology, guys. I decided I was going to go all in and buy all 35 issues like Ed did. Having never used the app, and having a seemingly magic touch when it comes to getting anything tech to not work the way it's supposed to, I decided to dip my toe in the pool first, and bought only the first issue. Problem- it's not showing up on my Kindle Fire. I can read it on the website, but that's beside the point. I sent a message to their customer service, but if I don't get a reply and a solution to the synching problem soon, I'm going to miss out on the sale.

Later this afternoon my family and I are heading out for Boston; we're going to PAX East this weekend. Lots to do before we go, so I'm going to have very little time to check back on this. I guess I can always just buy the physical copies on Amazon, but that will be around $90 instead of the $35 the digital versions would be with this sale. Great.

@Danimal did you log onto comixology through the app. I know it's probably different compared to the iOs version, but when I first used the app on my iPhone/iPad I had to press the bottom right button where it says purchases then on the top log in with my comixology info.
Danimal's Avatar
@gr8asianman Yeah, turns out the problem was that I'm a moron. For one thing, I wasn't logged in. For another thing, I was looking in the wrong spot. Like I said, moron. Hard to believe in 2012 someone could still be this tech-stupid, but...
In my defense, the interface is not the most intuitive. I was clicking "My Comics", but I needed to go into "Featured", which brings up a drop-down menu that includes "Purchases". Oh, and yeah, you need to be logged in. Yeesh. Anyway, I'm going back now to buy the rest of the series. Thanks again.

@Danimal,

Lol I had a somewhat similar experience. When I bought the walking dead, I was able to download them on my ipad and kindle fire with no problems. Then I bought World War Hulk on my ipad and was unable to dl them on my fire, because I had logged out I quickly figured it out though

Love, love, love this book. A great deconstruction as to why Superman should by all rights be batshit crazy.

Three issues in and I'm completely hooked. So glad I finally got it worked out how to download and read them. So, so good.
