How can people stand the taste of whisky much less like it?

I haven't had a single whiskey that I would say I enjoyed the taste of. Johny Walker tastes decent but I wouldn't drink it over beer or wine. I have to mix jameson with something to make it drinkable. So tell me why some people love the stuff?

Like all alcohol, it's an acquired taste.

Same to you. Some people will wonder how can you stand, let alone like, the taste of beer or wine.
Edit: Someone beat me to the answer; see above. |

Personally, wine just gives me a headache, and beer tastes horrid. different strokes for different folks, I guess. Red Stag is my favorite right now.

Maybe it's my American spirit (not necessarily patriotism) but I prefer bourbon to whiskey. Wild Turkey > Beam white label (rare to see any other variety in a bar) > Jack and Coke (I won't drink JD7 on its own, though). The J&C (which isn't as good as any rum and coke in the first place but won't lead to questions of your manhood and is an extremely frequent special) has the additional benefit of most likely not making you as drunk as anyone you're with during the same time span, particularly if you just pretend like that's what you're drinking when you really only get your glass refilled with coke after happy hour because you're cheap. That same tip applies to a lot of mixed drinks but how to be cheap/sober while pissing the night away is surely a different topic.
As for "real" whiskey, I prefer Irish whiskeys over scotch (although it was fun buying a bottle of 21 year Chivas on my 21st birthday), and Powers to Jameson, in all cases most likely because of my inherent Irish cheapness. That said someone already came up with the perfect solution to your problem: the boilermaker. |

You should go with gentleman jack, way better than original JD. Knob creek and maker's mark are also all good choices and all go well with coke. Another good one is sailor jerry's but it is dark spiced rum, really good tasting. You should probably switch to jose cuervo platino, you can take shots all day of that or make some bomb ass margaritas. Its on the expensive side but it makes patron look like shit.
whiskey is for sure an acquired taste and is not for the faint of heart as it will sneak up on you if you mix it with coke. I pefer to drink straight or on the rocks, I believe coke kind ruins the hard work of making a good whiskey. jamesons is very good to drink on the rocks or straight. I like drinking beer though as it is more cheap than buying a bottle every week. My favorites are coors light, fat tire and shiner bock with its many different styles of beer like oktoberfest or wild hare. Good luck to you!! |

Not all whiskey is great.
Not sure if you can get it, but try Crown Royal...it's heaven in liquid form. |

@fatman: I'd suggest Single Barrel Jack over Gentlemens Jack.

Crown Royal is my favorite as well, but like the very first comment said, it's an acquired taste.
And I don't really consider whiskey a "drink by itself" liquor anyway. My friends do shots of it once in a while, and ya that's gross. But what liqour (70 proof or higher) actually taste's "Good"? For the most part, if you're drinking liquor without mixing it with anything, you're not drinking it for the taste. Mixed with coke, whiskey is delicious. |

Try cranberry juice and Crown Royal (cran & crown) or Seagrams 7 and 7-Up (7 & 7).

bkjohns1 just beat me to the punch. 7 & 7 is my drink of choice. It is fantastic. That said, my wife does not like them at all. So it must be an acquired taste.
