Why Do People Struggle To Back In?

I've always wondered this, especially when I see someone spending 5 minutes trying (what I can only assume is their best) to back in. I notice them doing it, so then I just stand there and watch them for a few minutes while they struggle to maneuver into place. The worst part is that when I see this while it's happening or even after, they didn't go in straight which will make things difficult for the people next to them or the people who use it in the future.
I can kind of understand if they have a really big one that they're trying to fit in, but even then I still don't see the point since it's going to be difficult either way, whether you're going in or going out. I guess it's just a matter of preference that that point. So anyone do this and have some insight for me? It's something I've been wondering for a long time. I don't back in myself, but maybe some great reasoning will make me want to in the future. |

I don't back in useless it's the best situation. Most people can't drive for shit to begin with and that's going forward. Going backward? Oh boy.

I back in all the time with my car, but it only takes me ~15-20 seconds. I think the longest I've taken is a minute, but that was because I was backing in a 20ft moving truck.

People back in because its easier to pull out (Whoa.) because they'll have more visibility.
They suck at it because of course you're going to suck doing something backwards that you suck at doing forwards. |

I hate people who back in... it's just wrong and not the way it's supposed to work.

I think the only times I back my car in is at concerts when they force you to, or when I plan on loading up my car and make it easier to load stuff into it. Mainly the bigger items.
Otherwise, I prefer not to do it. Not that I'm terrible, but I don't feel particularly good at doing it either. |

Oh, how clever.
I wouldn't back in because I don't swing that way. I have the chicks back in, but that takes patience. Sometimes you end up heading out as they are backing in...which is all right. Sometimes it's better than all right. And if it's a struggle to fit in, they have products for that at any drugstore. |

I'm awful at it and my wife makes fun of me whenever I try.
...I just realized what that sounds like. Well, fuel to the fire and all that. |

I wonder the exact damn thing daily. I park in a parking garage at work and it is amazing watching someone take a solid minute to park backwards, all the while making other cars wait to get by until they are done.
The other thing that blows my mind is the amount of people who walk right down the middle of the parking lot, like they are playing chicken with oncoming cars. I kind of wish we could let natural selection happen for those people. |

UGH! Don't get me started... EVERYONE in Japan backs in and NO ONE here can drive properly.
I see people literally taking minutes to back into spaces all the time, my mother-in-law included. Anytime I ask someone why they would possibly back into every single space, they invariably say "Because it's easier to drive out." To which I always respond "But isn't it easier to drive into the small space and back into the much larger space?" This response always nets me a |

I thought Japanese cars tended to have cameras to make it easier.
I don't mind when people back in to parking spots, but I take offense when they back into slanted spots that are intended to be one direction only. I just kind of question their sanity at that point. |

Very few people actually know how to use their mirrors, including myself until I started working at a car dealership, now I can squeeze trucks and suv's mirror to mirror/bumper to bumper effortlessly.

My city's traffic code requires you to back into parking spaces.

Depending on the shape of the parking space and how much space you have to manuver, it's sometimes easier to back in than it is to go in head first. This is because your axis of rotation tends to be situated closer to the front of the car.

Most people never properly learned how to reverse park or reverse around a corner. Attempting this in moderate traffic is not a good idea. But if you are experienced, there is nothing like backing in when it fits like a glove and you can pull out quickly!

I can back in in one try...10-15 seconds, tops.
It helps that I have to back out of a 40 foot driveway on a daily basis. Sometimes, for a change of pace, I'll back up the driveway. |
