Just got a PSP over the weekend: Am I too late? |
572 views |
![]() Hey so my nearby target just dropped the PSP fifa12/Cars 2 bundle to $111. Last time I saw it was about 13O ish. There were only two left and I decided to go ahead and buy it after two factors came up. One it was the weekend so someone *might* pick it up and two it was cheaper than the core without the memory card or games. I used some of the money from gift cards and buy the thing on the spot. Over the past 5 years I have been slowly picking up a few titles on clearance here and there in the hopes that one day the bundle will drop to under 1OO bucks. Considering the Vita seems to be in the spot light , retailers are slowly pushing out the PSP making it harder to find. Even games are harder to find in stores. Anyways now that I have this thing, and a few games along with a starter kit I bought from BB for 5 dollars, now what? I do have a play station Plus membership card. Should I activate it on the PSP even though I don't have a PS3? I also want to play emulators on this system. Any suggestions? thanks Edit: Sorry for the delay , but here are the games I have stocked piled over the years. -Star Wars: Battlefront: ES -Splinter Cell: Essentals -Virtua Tennis: WT -End War -GTA:CTW -Rtype Command -Mod Nation Racers -Ultimate Ghost n goblins -Namco Museaum -GR: AW2 -Mortal Kombat -Castlevania: DXC -Loco Roco 2 -Soul Calbiur: BD and of course Fifa 12 and Cars 2 that came with the system. |

I honestly think you're a little too late. I know I wouldn't pick up a PSP at this point, I'm waiting for a $170 Vita or $200 Vita bundled with a game and/or memory card, which I think we may see around black Friday.
I wouldn't recommend activating your PS+ membership for your PSP, at this point basically nothing given out on PS+ is compatible with the PSP (they did away with giving out Minis and PSOne Classics). They are adding Vita to PS+ in November, so I would at least wait to see what that looks like before activating your card. You could always just sell your PS+ membership card as well for a few bucks. Anyways, hope you enjoy your system. |

I am sure there is some life in the PSP. I've been seeing a lot of home brew stuff on youtube. Thanks for the advice about not activating my PS Plus membership with the PSP.

I think I may have an extra copy of Final Fantasy Tactics: War of the Lions laying around if you want to buy it on the cheap...

Don't connect the PSN account to your PSP if you plan to put CFW on it. You'll just revert back to OFW.
Games you need to buy/play for your PSP: -Final Fantasy Tactics: War of Lions -Valkriya Chronicles 2 & 3(if you know Japanese) -Persona 3: Portable -Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops -Grand Theft Auto: China Town Wars -Killzone: Liberation (HARD FUCKING GAME) -Dissidia 012: Duodecim Final Fantasy (just for the epic fights) -Patapon -Endless PSone games from the PSN The PSP has a huge library and the ability to play PSone game from the PSN expands that library even further. |

I personally think you made the right decision especially if you are trying to game on the cheap.
The PSP has better battery life than the Vita and is lighter so in my opinion it is a much more portable device. And used UMDs can be found a lot cheaper than the digital equivalent. I'd suggest looking around GoHastings.com during one of their sales (another sale should happen within the next couple days) and pick up a bunch of PSP classics. Some other games that haven't been mentioned: God of war series (2 PSP titles) Burnout Legends Monster Hunter Freedom Unite Ratchet PSP Daxter Phantasy Star Portable Ys Seven Crisis Core: FFVII MGS: Peace Walker Jeanne D'Arc If you are strictly going to play at home and sticking to digital content, I'd say the Vita is a much better option. In terms of portability, library content, and used games prices the PSP currently trumps the Vita in my opinion. This probably won't change for at least another 1-2 years. |

I actually bought a PSP recently despite having a Vita so I could play some UMD only games and emulators.
However, unless it's UMD only, I would only buy games online so that if you do decide to upgrade to a Vita, your collection will go with you. Also, activating your PS+ membership would be a complete waste. |

The downside is that PSP games ARE going to be more difficult to find at this point. The upside is that when you do find them, they ARE going to be cheap.
Your first hint is Target. Go to the nearest Target, and check the area where they sell Playstation accessories. There should be a 4-Gig PSP Memory stick for sale there for $15. This is a reasonable price for a memory stick of that size. You could probably get one for even less on clearance, but the $15 stick is consistent and immediately available. Amazon is your best friend when it comes to finding games. A lot of PSP games are going to be much harder to find at retail stores. Major retailers hardly even carry them anymore, and most of the ones that do just have bargain-bin fodder. While a few gems can be found this way, the majority of the selection will be licensed dross. With Amazon you can cherry-pick the very best titles. I would strongly recommend Castlevania: Dracula X Chronicles. This is a solid game in its own right. When you consider all of the unlockable extras, it is an absolute bargain. |
