Quickly gaining weight. :(

Well, I seem to be having a problem with weight gain the past few months, which is starting to drive me crazy. The last time I weighed anywhere near as much was back in high school. I'm sort of trying to find a way to trim some weight.
Back in high school, my weight went as high as 158lbs where I needed to where a size 32 pants. My senior year in high school and my early college years, my weight started to drop significantly. I was down to under 130lbs. After college I gained a little weight up to 140lbs. For a while my weight was around the mid 130's at the most (pants size of 29-30). Ever since I moved back to Maryland and changed jobs, my weight has been going up. I first noticed my weight increase when I jokingly weighed myself on a package scale, where it said I weighed 143lbs. When I got home, I checked the scale and saw I was over 142lbs. What are reasons I could be gaining weight? Well, I'm no longer constantly on my meet moving around at my current job like my last one. I haven't ridden my bike in a while due to having a flat tire. It's not winter time where I snowboard and participate in Winter activities. I haven't full court basketball games since Summer. Another problem is that I have more food than I probably should at home, where I'll eat a lot of white bread, Pillsbury breads (like crescent rolls), white cupcakes from Safeway once a week, fast food 2-4 times a week (I've even gotten fast food at lunch for work at times since I'm nearby places), etc. My soda intake has remained the same. My metabolism might have slow down since I reached 30 years old, but I really hope that's not the case. I also don't have an exercise facility at my apartment community, but I never once used it. What makes me want to drop weight so bad? I want to stay thinner because I'll fit into cosplay costumes better, and I think being skinnier just looks better for my cosplaying. I prefer being able to wear the same clothes I've been wearing for a long time (mostly pants). I just don't want much weight on myself since I have way too many relatives/family members who are overweight. I personally feel at my height, weighing over 135lbs is too much unless I'm some massive body builder. Winter time should help me out because I can get more active. I need to get around to getting my bike tire fixed so I can bike. I would like to workout sometime, but I rarely have enough time and I lack any equipment at home. While I can sprint, I cannot run for long distances too well. My main goal is to at least keep my weight under 140lbs for a long time. |

No comment on your motivation. If it works then it works but still...
What's your height? No more white bread (or any of that other stuff), switch to multi-grain. Cut the cupcakes back to once a month (and probably a lower portion). No need to completely deny yourself food you enjoy but it needs to be moderated. How much soda do you drink in a day? Whatever the number, cut it in half (if not completely) and replace that amount with water. Even if it's only temporary, going completely off soda will practically guarantee some fairly quick weight loss. Go at least 2 weeks without soda, drinking only water (with the exception of milk for cereal). It will probably be hard for the first 2-3 days but once you get past that it will get easier to refrain from the soda. Your metabolism has almost certainly slowed down since your 30. It's not a magic number but pretty much everybody's metabolism takes a hit during that period of life. If you want to maintain your weight and level of good health you HAVE TO EXERCISE. There's just no way around it. Not just some occasional weekend stuff a couple of times a month. Regular exercise at least 2-3 times a week. It doesn't have to be the same thing but it does need to elevate your heart rate and keep it elevated for a good length of time. There is always time to exercise. It's just a matter of prioritizing what you do and most likely making changes to your free time schedule. |

At first I was like WTF when reading this Blog since I'm 6'1 160Ib and I workout everyday and I'm really skinny. But I guess at that height you'd need to keep a lower weight. I have some pants that are a little small but I still fit in with the 32 waste lol.

er when it comes to metabolism. There's no way around it, it just sucks and it won't get better. When I hit 28-29 my hyperspeed metabolism dropped to normal. Still haven't adjusted to the fact that I can't eat like I used to. neocisco is right, you can't win unless you excercise. Sorry. |

Your weight/height ratio is normal. You are closer to the heavier end but you're not there yet. Don't be so concerned about the weight number. If you moderate what you eat and exercise regularly you'll start to feel better even if the weight is a few pounds over what you think you should be at. Do yourself a favor, do not weigh yourself too often. Natural fluctuations can easily frustrate you. I only weigh myself twice a month and that typically reflects any true weight gain or loss. If you're going to change your eating habits and cut out the soda (and exercise!), weigh in the day before you start then stay off the scale until at least 2 weeks have passed. I can pretty much guarantee you will be pleased with the initial results. If you continue with that routine you will eventually hit a bit of a wall. When that happens, DON'T GIVE UP. Stick with it while your body goes through a leveling off period as it will eventually start back up again. Changing the exercise routine is always a good idea when you hit a wall. Your muscles will get bored with the same old, same old and need a variety to work them in different ways.

No. No. No. No. No.
Get out of the house. Get some fresh air and sunshine. Meet some people. Go someplace different. Don't be some shut-in hermit. |

Hey buddy mana, you may wanna check out kettle bells. you can do a bunch of exercises with them at home, they are easy on the joints, and you can get your butt kicked in just a few minutes. If you aren't a muscular guy you may wanna start with a lighter bell and just work your way up!

Mana, my bro- The fact is, you can't eat like a 8 year old anymore.
I've been having some medical issues with food lately and lost 40 lbs since April. I had to go on a gluten-free, sugar free, low fat diet. No exercise yet. But now I can now have some sugar and fat, but I noticed that gluten (wheat) products don't agree with me. Also, I weigh like almost 2 of You. So don't get too down on yourself for being 140. You should consider changing your name to ManaLight. |

Glycemic index. Everyone will learn about this one day as you'll also find yourself gaining weight - this is the index of how fast foods rise your blood sugar levels. The worst things you can eat are those with (1)high fructose corn syrup, (2)bleached products and foods which are high on the Glycemic index - Google this information and study what you will find... this is a life changing reality of how food effects your body. - Bleached food ( white rice, store bought breads, some cereals, etc, these bleached foods spike our blood sugar levels unnaturally high. -- -- there is one more item i haven't mentioned, and this one is a real silent killer, aspartame. Aspartame is found in diet sodas and foods, this is a real bastard as for years people ate diet foods with hopes of losing weight/cutting corners... but, unfortunately, after years of study scientist now find aspartame to actually make you fat. Google bud, google away. this info will help you, just do the research.

you don't have to do anything special like work out or get into some crazy new routine, all you have to do is start calorie counting, which I think you actually might enjoy. All you need to do is look up a calorie calulator to find out how many calaries your body needs per day to maintain your weight and and intake a few hundred less. you will lose one pound per 1000-2000 calories and should average about 1lb loss per week.

Dealing with food is easy for me when gaming. Usually the game distracts me so I don't need unhealth snacks like chips, though I drink about 5 cans of soda a day with that.
Food while working on the other hand, I'm just out of control. I work at McDonald's and go to college. At both I just get hungry and buy tons of food (or get free food). I think the way to address this is to bring food and water with you beforehand. So instead of 2 hamburgers for lunch, bring a water and an orange. It just happens because I don't have the food with me. At least where I live it is very hot and if you don't have water you will feel both thirsty and hungry, even if you don't really need to eat. Water can feel very replenishing. |

Losing weight is 80% diet and 20% exercise. Maintaining weight is closer to 50/50.
