Thoughts on International Moving? (Specifically Overseas)

Going to try to keep this one shorter than usual today. I never thought I would ever say it, but I’m really considering pursuing employment in other countries (specifically overseas) at this point. I want my career to work out for me so strongly, I really think I might be willing to open my options to international companies. Not only that, but Europe has a SURPRISING amount of Game Audio jobs. I’ve always seen positions popping up over there all the time, but never applied before because I just hoped I would find one here. Well, almost three years of job hunting now, I feel like this may just be what I need to do.

Why the sudden change of heart? I’ve realized that I NEED (not even want) a stable and steady job in my life. Since I was a little kid I had big career dreams, and I love working. I love the office environment, I love the socialization of co-workers and clients, I love working. I can’t do this “going where the wind goes” type of lifestyle that many creative people like to do. I want that steady, in house, reliable job, with whatever pros and cons it may bring. It’s just what I’ve always wanted.

So why didn’t I want to search for work internationally initially? Lots of reasons actually. First and foremost, I think I would miss my family. While I only see them once a year now and like being on my own away from them, I feel that if I moved overseas I would be upset if I couldn’t see them other than maybe every 5 or so years (or I move back, which would be no easy feat - more on that later). They would never get to have a part in my children’s life, and my family who dearly loves me would be crushed at my decision.

I’m also nervous about it because it’s a really big endeavor to make the move. I’ve spent the last 3 years amassing a good deal of nice furniture, and other pleasant material items. I don’t know if I would be ok with selling it all off and starting fresh. I’m a person that gets attached to his belongings. I’m not a huge fan of change. I could move it, but it might get damaged and overseas moving costs are HUGE.

And what about the new culture, or the new language, or the new government. New mail systems, new bank accounts, new people. I’m not a huge fan of the USA honestly, but like the saying goes “the grass always looks greener on the other side”. What if you make the move and things are not right for you... I feel that an international move is at least a 5 year commitment (unless you want to waste lots of money...), so it’s not like you can just move back comfortably if things don’t work out.

So I just wanted to hear some people’s thoughts on moving overseas for work? Would you do it? If anyone here has relocated internationally for work, how did it work out for you?
