New Year's Resolutions

I don't usually make new year's resolutions, but with the massive backlog, I'm going to make at least one this year. If I am not going to play a game immediately, I am not going to buy the game until it is $20 or less. Between the deals I find here and the free games from PS+, I have way too many games to get around to, and it keeps getting worse and worse. I only have two games pre-ordered for the new year, and both are games that will be played right away, Ni No Kuni for the PS3, and Lego City Undercover for the Wii U. Right now, I'm wrapped up in Sleeping Dogs, and I love it, but I still check for other deals like I just need to buy more stuff. I think I'll also try and cut down on my Blu-Ray purchases as well. I should probably start a tracking sheet like the one in the blogs a few days ago, that would keep me under control a little better.

What about you, any resolutions this year?

I'm the same way when it comes to buying more games than I have time to play. My backlog also keeps getting worse and worse, so my gaming resolution is similar. Mine is that I'm only going to allow myself to buy 3 new games this year before the 2013 Holiday season and BF deals come around. I know I want to play Bioshock Infinite and GTA V as soon as they come out, so I'm forcing myself to decide what that 3rd game will be. Tomb Raider? The Last of Us? South Park: The Stick of Truth? Hopefully I can stick to it and knock some games out of my backlog this year. If I can show patience on other big releases I want, I can get them much cheaper later. Oh, FWIW, I'm not counting XBLA games in this resolution. I bought a dozen 1600 MS point cards when Target had them half price on BF, so I'll use some of those. I tend to wait for XBLA games to go on sale anyway, even when I have a huge surplus of points. One exception this year will be The Cave, which I'll be buying as soon as it releases.

I'm also going to try to give up soda cold turkey. Tried to give it up in 2012 and failed miserably; that will be a tough one for me, but I'm going to give it a shot.
I don't usually make resolutions either. But I'm going to finish the games that I started and for some reason, either frustration or boredom, stopped playing. This list includes Crysis 2, Fallout 3 DLC, Red Faction: Guerilla, Brutal Legend, Brink, Red Dead Redemption, Lost Planet 2, Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe.

@danimal The only reason I'm trying to curb the digital games as well is because PS+ gives out so many games, I can't keep up there either. Hard drive space isn't a problem, but there are a few games I bought, that I haven't played that ended up being free. If it is something I will definitely play right away, I'll still pick it up (Rock Band Blitz, Guardians of Middle-Earth), otherwise, I'll try to hold off.

Giving up soda is a great thing to do health-wise. I lost 15-20 pounds the first time I did it. I should probably stop drinking it again.

@Polishinfidel I'm not as bad about finishing games, but I definitely don't platinum or 100% every game I play. I think the main one I haven't finished is Final Fantasy XIII-2.

I would recommend even waiting for games to be $10 or less. That's the point I'm at. When it's time to buy a new game I don't have a problem paying whatever price if I'm going to play the game multiplayer with someone but if it's just going to sit in my backlog then there is no point in spending a lot of cash on it.

Ever thought about getting rid of some of the games? Every year since I joined CAG I sell off the chunk of my backlog that I didn't touch at all during the year to have some extra spending cash. Also helps me cut down on the size.

As for real resolutions. I don't have any of those.

For a couple years now, I've been doing what you've vowed to do too. Wait until games drop to $10 - $20. It really maximizes your dollar.

Although I'll make rare exceptions:

- Nintendo games for example rarely drop.

- If it's a game from a smaller developer/publisher that I really want to support (like Atlus w/ Catherine).

- Or a cause I really believe in: Project Rainfall (Xenoblades, Last Story), where it's important to show the game community's support to convince publishers to import seminal games from Japan, etc.

Glad to hear another CAG adopting the same rules by waiting for games to get on the cheap. Like you said between all the deals here, free PS+ games, massive backlogs, there's no point in paying more than $20 for a game anymore. Gamefly's used game sales are are my main source to purchasing all my games now. Eventually everything drops to about $10 - $15 there.

Like raarar said, I'd recommend waiting til games hit $10 before you buy them, $15 at the absolute most.

And I never, ever buy games on release anymore. Not one. I wait for everything, there is no way I could justify $60 for ANY GAME with as many great games I still have in my backlog.

@sabin23 I've been buying games supporting smaller developers, and that's part of the problem. I have Xenoblades and Last Story sitting untouched.

I don't know if I could even say I'll never buy a new a game. There are certain games I will play right away, or ones that I play with my girlfriend that jump right to the top of the queue, so they are worth it for me. If I can limit myself in some ways, I might make progress on my backlog.

Good luck with your backlog resolution. I am going to attempt something similar this year.
