Going on a Business Trip to San Francisco... What to Expect, What to Do?

So after months of my company I am a contractor for mentioning they want me to go out there to work on-site for a week or two, just now they finally booked solid travel plans for me. At one point I was pretty excited to go out there, but that was back in the summer yet. They were located in the much quieter San Mateo at the time, but have thus relocated to the SOMA area (whatever SOMA even means...), which in my regards in an extremely busy and intimidating looking place.
I originally was hoping to go from Monday to Friday, because they want me there a minimum of 5 business days, but due to some company schedule complications, I find myself having to stay the weekend, working 3 days on week and 2 the next before coming back. Meh... That being said, I'll be in the city for 7 days, with two of them being completely empty. Thinking I'll die of boredom in my two weekend days, I was hoping to get some insight on what to expect of the city, and what would be good to do with my time. I have never been in the SF area before, so I'm certainly a bit timid about it, and I won't have a rental car either (since my hotel is about 0.75 miles to the office and I agreed to walk). So what could I expect, and what should I do with my free time in the SOMA area to pass my time? I have heard some people saying this area can be pretty sketchy with homeless people and crime, so that does worry me a bit, especially since it gets dark early this time of year. I will probably try to plan to do some things with co-workers while there, but I will inevitably have free time, and wondering what would be best to do. (and safest!) Any CA CAGs or people that have visited the city before have any insight on good things to do and what to expect on my trip? |

SOMA stands for South of Market its in the south beach area. There is nothing to be timid about. The area is fine and you have nothing to worry about. As for things to do not sure what you are into but you could check out yerba buena center for the arts or sf museum of modern arts.
There are a ton of great little places to eat, so just stop by which ever place catches your eye. As for things to do at night end up is a decent club/bar that has a setting for the general public. The dna lounge is a place to check out as well if you have varying tastes, check the night to see what is going on. Kinda hard what to point out not knowing what you like or are looking for. Just relax and enjoy your trip and you will have fun. |

SF Bay Area resident here - SoMa stands for "South of Market," i.e., South of Market Street. It's a very nice area with some fairly new housing developments and also where AT&T Park is located.
Never really hung out in SoMa...there are some restaurants bars like Bar Basic and such. There's a Lucky Strike bowling alley, but it's fairly expensive. There's also the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and the Westfield Metreon. If you want to explore outside of SoMa, you can take pub trans to some famous SF landmarks like the Golden Gate Bridge, Lombard Street, Coit Tower, Haight Ashbury, etc. My favorite spot during winter is Fisherman's Wharf..the clam chowder and crab dishes are outstanding this time of year. These places won't be too busy during the weekdays. Lots of options for pub trans like Muni, BART, taxis (VERY expensive) and cable cars. Not sure which week you're coming out here but just note that bars and restaurants are going to be really busy this Sunday and (hopefully) the first Sunday of February for the 49ers and the Super Bowl. Enjoy your trip! |

Yeah, public transit in SF (and other parts of the Bay Area) is very good, so it's relatively easy to get around if you don't want to stay in the SOMA neighborhood over the weekend.
Two of my favorite SF tourist attractions are Coit Tower (get a great view of the whole city) and the Musee Mechanique (covers pretty much the entire history of arcade amusements). Fisherman's Wharf is VERY touristy, but it's worth checking out when the sea lions are there. |

I've never been there, but I want to go. Have fun. Would have been nicer if they could have sprung for a rental car for you, but it's understandable that they didn't with the office so close.

thanks for the insight and advice everyone! It certainly has eased my worries about the trip and I am less anxious about it now for sure. Planning on making the best of my time, so here's hoping to have a great time.
@tylerh1701 Another reason they didn't want to do the rental car was because they said it's much easier to just walk everywhere due to being so busy. (Much like other big cities like New York, Chicago, etc) You also have the ability to see more than you would just driving. |

You will see a lot of very crazy homeless people. That's my #1 takeaway from visits to San Francisco for conventions.
You definitely don't want to drive. Parking is more expensive in SF than anywhere I've ever been (and I live in LA). |

@grimace - I'm glad where I live (Salt Lake City) isn't any bigger than it is. I can't imagine living in a huge town where driving was basically too much of a hassle to do.
@vegan - I forgot about parking. Like I said, SLC is big but not on the same scale as major american cities. I'm so so happy for that. I can't imagine paying out the ass just park my car. |

Parking is definitely rough and they're enforcing it 7 days a week now.
Plus, the Transportation Authority is testing out a system that puts cameras on buses that takes pictures of traffic violators and then mail the ticket to the violator. |
