Waiting for the phone to ring or Life at the help desk

I work for a computer consulting company that supports the IT of non profits in the area. Some days the phone is ringing off the hook, others it is dead as a doornail. I understand that some people are intimidated by computers and don't always know what to do when it comes to certain things. I have had some calls that have taken me some time to resolve, and others that make me wonder how some people are even able to turn a computer on.
One issue that I had to help a user with today dealt simply with plugging a USB mouse into a laptop. Apparently out of the box the mouse had a USB to PS2 connector attached to the cable. Being that USB is plug 'n play I told the user that they could remove the converter and would not have to use the driver CD on the laptop. After walking them through the driver install things were finished. I was praised as though I found thier long lost puppy. I always feel weird being overly praised for helping people with such easy tasks. I helped setup the wireless network for my wife's aunt, and you would have though I had just won the lottery or something. My wife constantly reminds me that not everyone knows as much about computers as I do and that I need to be patient with people when they call about things like this. |

You know, back in high school I laughed at my teacher for having trouble turning on a VCR. Nowadays with technology flying so quickly, sometimes I even feel like I can't even fully utilize my PS3! For God's sake, it's just a video game system! Let alone hacking my PSP.. it's just way too complicated to me for some reason. Sigh...

Back when my family first got a wireless router, we had to call Linksys because a laptop wasn't getting the signal.... the solution was to turn the wifi switch on. Dumb things happen to the best of us...

I also work in IT. It really amazes me how some people have zero computer skills. Even my parents and in-laws who come from another country and are blue collar can make their way around a computer pretty well. I constantly run across people who work in an office environment who can't do simple things like ftp a file, install a program, or (yup) figure out how to plug in a keyboard or mouse. I swear they teach this stuff in grammar school nowadays. No wonder there's a TV show called "Are You Smarter Than A 5th Grader?" out there.
Your wife is right though. When you're hip deep in technology all day, you do forget that there are people out there who do not know or care to know anything about computers beyond what it takes to do their job. What really scares me is IT people who don't know jack about the technology they're working with. I'm pretty sure knowing how to get around on the command line is a core job skill when you're working on UNIX systems. Argh! |
