Why should I buy a PS3?

Having had a birthday this past week I received some of my favorite gifts, Best Buy gift cards. Being the gamer in the family no one is ever really sure what games to get me so I always tell them it would just be easier if they get me gift cards. While I am glad that I received these gifts it leaves me in a bit of a conundrum. I am about $100 away from owning a PlayStation 3.
When MGS4 released I was bitten with the bug to play that game. If you read my first blog post I mentioned that I was tempted to buy the game for $34 at Meijer even though I didn't own the system. There are several other games on the system that I would be interested in playing. After reading about Uncharted I was really excited to play it, and then I found out it was only going to be on the PS3. I have this problem where I get excited about being able to buy something. Then when it comes time to pulling the trigger I start to have my doubts. Do I need this item? Are there other things I would rather have? Will I regret having purchased this? Things like that. I was in Best Buy and they had one 80GB PS3 in stock. I picked it up, read some of the text on the box and put it back down. I took a stroll around the store came back, and picked it up again. Then I browsed through the games to see which ones I would actually enjoy playing. I was able to count on one hand the PS3 exclusives that I would like to play. I started thinking that I would just be getting the system for the same reason as I have the Wii. I would only own it for the PS3 exclusive titles, but normally buy multi-console games on the 360 (I'm an achievement whore, sue me). I think in the long run there would be plenty of games for the system that I would want to play to warrant owning the system. So, now I will be debating myself with a list of pros and cons to owning the PS3, and I was hoping for a little insight from some of my fellow CAGs. |

You may already know my answer from my own blog u commented on, but I would say to go for it. I just got mine and maybe this is just first impressions but so far it has been great and I have had no regrets about spending the money (even selling my wii to get it). I have a 360 too but I still thought it would be worth it to have the ps3 for the exclusives and the hi-def blu ray. I kinda favor the games I won't play online for the ps3 and use the 360 for those i would play online. But there is also the achievement side so if you really care about the points then it might be another way to look at it. In the end I would just go with your own feelings about it. Good luck with the decision though, seems to be a tough one...

I say go for it. I don't think you can miss out on Resistance 2 and Little Big Planet. The online is not so different from XBL anymore. since you're an achievement whore, most new games are going to have Trophies.

You need something that will draw lots of dust to it. Or, you want to watch BluRay movies on a 1080p HDTV.

i regretted buying my ps3 for well over a year. i bought the 360 and ps3 within a week of each other the 360 has consistently been played more until the last few months. i like the trophies and the psn sales.

I only use my PS3 as a BluRay player, however, it may even then be obsolete once the XB360 gets the Netflix playback. I enjoyed Soul Calibur 4, Uncharted and Pixeljunk Monsters with LBP looming on the horizon.
I would really assess for what you would use the system. I bought it solely because I had way too much disposable income at the time. A pretty solid rule of thumb is whether or not there is a software lineup equivalent to the cost of the system for you. For instance, the system runs $399, so can you name 7 PS3 titles (or equivalent PSN titles) that you will absolutely buy right now for it? This excludes upcoming titles. Hope that helps. |

Don't get one. There just isn't enough exclusive games for it that matter.
Stick to your 360 until the PS3 goes down another hundred or so. I've had a PS3 for about two years now, it's an AWESOME system, but... just not enough games. Will be worth it when it hits around $300. ... If you ask me, that is. |

For me the only game is MGS4. The next would have been FF13, but now that it's also 360 bound that's one more reason not to dump $400. I don't have interest in the other games coming out for it. Up to you.

If you think you'll get one eventually, just do it now instead. Sony already announced the new 80GB will have no PS2 Backwards compatibilty. And looking forward, I doubt they'll add it back in, as they've been steady chipping BC away. Then again, if you don't mind having both the PS3 and PS2 (assuming you have one) set up, you could probably wait for another price drop.

@Chronis: That's why I'm glad I picked up one of the last remaining 60GB PS3's. Hooray for integrated Emotion Engines.
The current 80GB PS3's have weaksauce PS2 BC, so I would not make BC an option at all. |
