Requiem for a Dream Impressions and My Neighbor Totoro Question

I would love to follow Requiem for a Dream with something a little more cheerful... but don't know which version to watch! FOX, Disney, or Japanese w/subtitles? I don't wanna mess up and pick a shitty version...

As for Requiem for a Dream, I really tried to like it. It wasn't a terrible idea, but I'm having a hard time saying that I enjoyed it overall. I liked how it showed the eating/drug dealing/doing drugs with all of the close ups. It was different and fresh to me at least, dunno if other movies use such a technique. When the sudden "FALL" title appeared I thought it said "FAIL". Right after a scene like that made it more amusing than it should have been. In addition, I laughed at the absurdity of "ass to ass", despite it being in one of the more serious scenes. Does that make me a terrible person?

I'm not sure if it's just because I wasn't paying enough attention, but I couldn't understand what the was going on in many parts of the movie. I STILL have questions even after the help of Wikipedia.
In the beginning, Sarah got the phone call, which was a fake I guess, that she was going to be on television. I really didn't like Sarah's story arc because there were too many things that seemed unlikely. She's with her friends or whatever on the chairs a lot it seems. Wouldn't they notice a change in personality? Why did the doctor not make sure she was taking the normal dose? I guess it's because the doctor wasn't a real doctor or something, because I seriously doubt a doctor would give a drug like in the movie without precautions made beforehand. Was Sarah supposed to be on TV? (It looks like the answer is no) If no, why was that package sent? How can filling out a form, while others are watching no less, benefet a fraud?

RFAD was okay, but I feel the message got lost in confusing writing. It's hard to recommend such a depressing movie when I can't even understand it myself!

Actually "Ass to Ass" is the moral of the story.

It's been like forever since i saw the fox version i was like 10, lol but i remember it was okay, but i dought u'll be able to find it. I own the Disney version, and its a pretty good dub, its Dakota Fanning and her little sister, as the mains. The DVD also has the japanese track so if u find yourself cringing u can always switch to it. lol.

Disney version subtitled. Saw it that way first on AMC and now I can't listen to any other version. They seem more realistic than the dubbed version. The way they scream talk is much better I feel. Awesome Movie.
The phone call can be whatever you believe. I'll explain that at the end. Her friends probably did notice a change in personality, but mostly they noticed her losing weight, with more pep. It wasn't until the point of no return on her downward spiral that they noticed something was terribly wrong. The drugs that were given to her were 'speed'. I forget the actual name of the drug, but there was an epidemic of doctors prescribing these during the mid-80s and it lasted until the early 90s. My mother was actually prescribed some uppers as a diet pill, and she never took them, thank god. These were shady practices, not taking care of the patient, not caring, not examining them. Was she supposed to be on TV? It's possible, alot of TV stations gather a 'stable' of potential contestants for their game shows. But the point is, it gave her a reason for living.

Hope that clears some things up.

Oh man, I love Totoro. That movie made me cry. I'm not even joking. But... ya know, in a happy, cheerful way. I think I watched the Disney version with subtitles. The English acting is not terrible, but they changed a lot. I'd get whatever version sticks closest to the Japanese.

You know what? I never thought I'd say this, but you're fine no matter which version you pick. They all have their charms.

I'm fond of the Fox dub -- it was really a great effort.
