I hate this car Part II

Here we go again. I just had the car serviced last month. The only thing was for me to buy new tires, which wil run about $400. Then on Thursday, on my way to work, the check engine light came on. I called the dealer this morning and since they can't give me a damn loaner car for me to use while my car gets checked, I have to wait til Friday to get it checked out. Before I go further, here is the list of me going back and forth to the dealers -20k service -Check engine Light= recall -30k service -Another check engine light= my aunt borrowed my car and didn't tighten up the gas cap. Cost me $25. -35k service, before my 2000 mile cross-country trip from LA to Nashville -Steering wheel column defective -40k service, VW dealer charging me $400 for the service. Took it to an independent mechanic who charged me $100 less. -Holding off on buying new tires -Check engine light on Thursday 9 friggin problems since I took over the lease. I now regret selling my Honda Civic. If VW doesn't see any issues with the car, they're going to charge me $93 just to look at it. WTF! After that, I called my brother and he's finally going to help me purchase a new/used car. My criteria will be a Japanese car (Honda, Toyota, Nissan), takes regular 87 octane gas (as the Passat only takes premium), and goes over 30 MPG on the highway. Should I just take it to the dealer anyway to get that checked out? The car runs fine but $93 is a lot of money just for them to run a diagnostic check. That POS Passat is going to be traded in. Otherwise, I've asked my roommate, who works at a Honda Dealership, will try to get me a special deal on either a Honda Fit or Honda Civic. If everything pulls off in my favor, I would be driving a new car at the end of the month. Otherwise, between now and the end of the year. |

VW's aren't necessarily bad cars, just very expensive to service. Yes, the dealership will generally cost more than independent shops.
If you're planning to get rid of the Passat, you will need to get it serviced (if there's a maintenance light on) so you can get a better sale/trade rate. If it were me, I'd get a Fit over a Civic. Cheaper, better gas, and about the same utility for a single driver or minimal passenger situation. |

Why are you servicing the car so frequently if you are on a lease???? It is their car and it is in their interest to keep the car working. Generally speaking if you have a new car and at the very least change the oil the car will work fine during the term of the lease assuming a three year lease. I am now on my second lease. I had a Lexus GS300 from 04 to 07 that I never serviced except for the oil change and the car worked great. I only changed one tire towards the end of the lease because I had to return the car with 4 working tires.
I now have an 07 Maxima that works great and I havent nor will I ever take the car to Nissan for Service. I have done 4 oil changes in the 18 months that I have owned the car and the car runs like a kitten. If you are so adamant about servicing a car during the life of the lease I suggest picking up a BMW as they offer free maintenance for the first 4 years or 50k miles. |

If you're only problem right now is a CEL, just take the car over to an autozone or similar place as most of them will give you a free "Check Engine Light Diagnostic" so you can at least know what's going on with it. If it's nothing major, just have it reset.

I use to own a GTI VR6. At first I loved the car. Quick, fun to drive. Then it all started to go to pot. I won't go into all the details, but suffice it to say that it died an early death, and the next time you see a VW stop at a toll both, check to see if they open the door in order to pay the toll. VW does not know how to make power windows and, worse, it is no longer possible to buy a new VW without power windows. You might think this is a minor thing, but the cost to fix the windows is ridiculous. You'll do it once, maybe twice, then you'll stop and then you'll start hating, hating, hating your car. Maybe not everyone has to go through toll booths all the time, but I had to stop at a badge check every work day, at least once a day and usually twice (lunch), and they require you to open the window to show your badge. Believe me, having to open the door to do this gets old real quick. I'll never buy another VW, and not just for the power window issue. Nice looking, but lousy cars.
Oh, and while Toyota's are reliable and great cars (if boring), Honda's are a bit overrated, at least in my family's experience. We've had many Hondas and while they are much better then VWs, they just aren't as reliable as everyone says, and they always die a relatively early death. Stick with Toyota. |

Honda Civic FTW! I'm on my 2nd Civic (2006 Coupe, first was a 1993 Coupe) and my maintenance costs/problems have been almost nil. I'm at about 36k on my current one and it has never had anything done to it except normal maintenance (oil change, etc.) since I got it new.
Sorry though about your bad luck :( |

I own an '05 Nissan Sentra SE and it's been an amazing car. I've had literally 0 trouble out of it in the year and a half I've owned it. I make frequent 500+ mile trips too...
