When men were men and the sheep were scared! -Box tagline

Hey everyone,

The closer we get to Christmas the more crazy the game scene gets. There's a ton of great games coming out.

What's your worst game related gift? Did you receive a game that's not for a system you own? Have you received a cheap knockoff of a system
because a clerk told your grandparents that it's 'better than Nintendo?'

Flash back to last Christmas. I get a gift from my uncle Dave, he tells me that 'he knows I like computers.' (which is never encouraging.) So I get this -Freddy Pharkas -Frontier Pharmacist. I later find out this is unintentionally awesome as this is a really classic game, BUT this is also the Mac version -which I don't have -or use floppy disks.

I just had to share. I was excited but couldn't hide the "What the hell is this?" look on my face. This was such a bizarre turn of events, I will keep this. I'm not intending for this to be a negative post. Seriously, I laugh every thime I see this box

I'm not some ungrateful punk, and I'm sure I'm not the first one to ask, but share if you will!

haha, that's a hilarious piece of software! i probably would have given a confused look as well.

unfortunately, i never received any video games for christmas or birthday. my parents never believed in buying me video games. which totally sucked. when i got my first paycheck, the first thing i did was go out and buy a PS2.

oh wait, i got an original gameboy with tetris and then got donkey kong land for it a year later. sorry i held a grudge mom and dad!

A Bug's Life for N64

The system came as a gift at the same time, but the games that were provided were not anything to be happy about.

I actually played that game for awhile because that's all I had, I still have nightmares...

When I was very young, I wanted Super Pitfall for the NES. Hugely terrible game, but I'd played it at my cousin's and thought it was a lot of fun. I didn't have time to get anywhere with it, and for some reason I didn't think to rent it (or, rather, ask my parents to rent it). I just said I wanted it.

For whatever reason, my mom went out to the mall and came back with....a Sega Master System.

Now, in my mind, I didn't (because I couldn't) take into account that I was getting an upgrade from a $50 game to a $200+ system.

I still vividly - vividly - remember seeing my mom holding the oversized SMS box out in front of me, this huge smile on her face. And all I could do at the time was throw a damn fit and run into my room screaming about how angry I was.

I did get over it and everything was fine in the long run. Oddly enough, I was going through boxes of things the other day and ran across the SMS box. My mom came out and looked at it, and I had to relay the above story (she didn't remember of course) and then apologized.

Eh.

I've wanted to play Freddy Pharkas for years now. Al Lowe is always FTMFW.

my aunt always used to buy me those “1001 great computer games” discs for just about every holiday growing up. you know the ones that you see at office depot that are really just a collection of really bad demos to really bad games...

One year my brother got me eternal ring for ps2. I still have the game, but every time I look at it I just shake my head.

Most of my "What the hell is this" moments aren't bad, in retrospect. I remember getting Monster Rancher Battle Card 2 on the PS1 years back, because my dad (or was it my uncle.....?) thought it was close enough to Pokemon. Needless to say, i was kinda pissed, though I eventually tried it. Since then, I love the Monster Rancher series! Another time was actually when I got my PSP. My aunt got it for me, but I really wanted a DS. So I was kinda pissed, but then I was like "Fine, i'll take it." So the time comes, and the one game I really wanted was Ridge Racer. I open the box.... and I swear the top part of the box looked like RR, and I was so happy. Then i openned the rest, Wipeout. It might just be me, but I never liked the Wipeout games. Fast forward several years, and even though I how have a DS, there isn't a lot that I really want for it, so my PSP has been played more.

Never really got any crap games. When I was about 7 I got Mega Man 4 though... That was the first time I stood up all night playing a game.. but it damn sure wouldn't be the last.

Freddy Pharkas is an AWESOME game. I played it when it first came out back then. I was still a youngin' and I replayed it about 5 years ago. It holds up. Point and click forever.

Rengoku for PSP. Christmas a couple years back. I didn't know anything about the game so I was hopeful. After an hour I was like "what the ??!!" worst.game.ever.

Thanks for sharing, all. It's great looking back at old videogame gifts. I also got some of those 1000 games on one disk. It was upsetting when I was younger as you KNEW there were only a few times through the year you'd get a chance to get games as gifts. People mean well but that can be devastating if there's a game (probably many) that you wanted.

If I get it working I will play through Freddy Pharkas. This was just last year, and I couldn't help the 'whaaa?' face.

Haha I had that Freddy Pharkas game! LOL Those were the golden days I loved all the Sierra "Quest" games.
