My exerience on LIVE as a girl...and how CAG has made all the difference in it! :) |

I am a gaming girl!
I love FPS and RPGs!! I got into gaming because of my brother, with games like Counterstrike and 007 Goldeneye, quite a few years ago. Until I got the 360, the N64 was the last system I played. So, I have been playing on LIVE now for quite a few months. I started playing my 360 back in the December '07 time frame and have been playing since then. My first 360 game I played was COD4 (which I didn't play until 4/08 as I tried out several original XBOX games ... such as Fable ... first)! Well, I got really excited and was keen to try out the multiplayer (after having beat the campaign) ... get online, turn on my mike for the first time, speak .... and it all went downhill from there! I was immediately harassed/put down upon and scorned for being a girl on LIVE! (mind you, this was THE first time I had ever played online ... I had not played any other online games/systems/etc prior to this). Needless to say, it took me aback! I turned off my mike, continued to play on LIVE as a Noob who was just really bad at the game, but no longer was I personally put down upon because of my gender. I never did run into any other girls during that time of playing (or not that I knew of). So I had no other comparison at the time. It went on like that for a several weeks, me the anonymous player (the one you see without a mike) until I finally came across the COD4 thread on CAG. I had been a member of CAG since 11/07 but had been looking for my TV/360/HD's up to that point and ghosted the forums, but had not looked into any of the specific gaming threads/etc (didn't even realize they existed). Well, I sent a post to the group which went: "So, I'm really new to the world of online gaming with the 360 (just got live recently) and have JUST started playing COD4 in the last couple weeks. I don't suppose that there's a CAG beginner group out there for people that are really bad and die a lot?? There was an immediate response from the group, all encouraging, offering help, etc. I was a bit concerned that when they found out I was a girl, the initial put downs/etc. would come, so I admitted to it straight away, but there were no negative responses! So either I added him or he added me, (never did the friend's list thing before this), and was invited by one of the guys to play one night and joined in. Turned on my mike for the first time in several weeks, which is good because I like to talk On that note, I have met many people on LIVE since. I have learned that the guys you meet on LIVE can be categorized in four ways: the ones who flirt/the ones who put you down immediately for being a girl/the ones who are normal (and must have actually MET a girl in real life)/and the ones who just don't care! I have come across all of these on many occasions and have had to do more "block communications"/mute than I could ever hope to count. I get friend requests multiple times a night, and have been "stalked" online on more than one occasion (just because I talk) ... ... but through it all, I have been playing with an amazing group of people who support, encourage, and fend off the crazy people (and occasionally harrass me ! I am now able to talk freely (and boy do I ... So I would just like to thank CAG and the community for being there and providing such an amazing experience I never expected to have on LIVE (after that first game...)! ![]() And just a note to any guy who may have read this all the way through: Just be normal when a girl is on LIVE. |

Welcome to CAG it really is a great place.
I find that gaming is a pretty intimidating place for girls but watching them become a normal amongst the sub-culture has been interesting to say the least. The best advice I can offer is just to keep on truckin, and one day the lands of Xbox Live are going to be similar to the real world, and as such, people will leave you alone. |

Yeah, we rag on you, but most of the time it's because of what you say rather than who you are. I sure miss playing with you and the others. :(
P.S. They're on the long walky way! |

I always feel bad when Im in a lobby and a girl starts talking because I know whats coming next. As soon as a feminine voice is heard the entire room immediately is filled with jackasses screaming at her. Which ends up with her turning off her mic. Which means we cant communicate with her to win the game. I feel bad for girls on xbl because there are always going to be idiots who talk shit. Good to hear you found good people to play with though. Its a shame live is full of such idiots.

Completely agree with genfuyung. Disheartens me greatly to hear that this happens to girls (I don't believe I've heard a girl speak online to this day still), but I'm really glad that you found some people who you enjoy playing with. I just wish there was more of that on LIVE (rather than everyone always arguing, smack talking, etc.)

JFYI: For those new to Xbox Live (XL), there are Xbox Ambassadors (XA) who are willing to provide a "helping hand." BTW, there's a friends list of available XA's on XL: Gamertag - XboxAmbassadors. Also, if you're a female gamer, I recommend Xbox GamerchiX.

I definitely agree with the blogger about playing with CAG's. I enjoy playing games and not hearing any racist/sexist comments. I am a guy, but I am a black guy and I hear racist comments all the time whenever I play games unless its with fellow CAG's. Now that I think of it, I need to get back into playing Call of Duty 4 and put down NHL 09 some. My gamertag is RuffStuff84 if anyone wants to add me.

Like what someone else said when they hear a female voice over live I know in the back of my mind shit is going to hit the fan. I would just shut the mic off. Hell if it wasn't hearing guys talk shit to the one female in the game it was some kid yelling random shit and I would get sick of them. I don't even use my mic anymore atleast not like I did in the past. When I do use it I usually have to find it because I forget where I put the damn thing. Most of the people that I have liked playing with are the ones on CAG. Usually it is just a bunch of jackoffs on Live when you let it set the room up.

Bah, Live is a douche-filled mecha for 12 year olds and/or social retards. You did the right thing, joining up with a group of like-minded gamers as opposed to braving the open/public matches. I personally think it's cool to have female gamers in the game, but I'm an old married fart who could give two shits about who I'm shooting between the eyes.

I'm a girl gamer too and it really sucks playing online when every game you have to wonder if you're going to be harassed or not. I've learned to only play with friends and/or my cousin since they back me up, but otherwise I just keep my mic muted. Just last game on Gears 2 I had to Report and Mute one guy who was calling me a slut because I raped him and his entire team and ended the game with the most kills. Love the Mute function!

It's too bad you're being harassed, but try not to take it too personally. It's LIVE. You'll be made fun of and called names regardless of your skill level, sex, sexual orientation, race, religion, or any other piece of information that a jerk can latch onto.
Just like any other gamer, it'll be much more fun with a group of nice people! |

Playing with people you have fun with is such a key. I was getting tired of COD4 when I first played with people on here but joined a CAG game and I ended up getting into the game all over again and enjoyed it much more the second time around.

Yet, she still hides being a gamer from her real-life friends
Congrats Shan for the post and thanks for all the laughs! Yeah, I 2nd what DarkTower said.....playing with friendly people really changes the game. I would have never thought I would go from playing once a week online with co-workers to playing almost every night of the week with my CAG brothers (and sister) |

Glad that you've had fun with us Shan. Maybe one of these days you'll get through a whole night without being harrassed once. We have your back!
