My Game of the Year Elimination Process #1

So the end of the year is coming up, and it's getting to the point where people sometimes pick a game of the year. Me, I'm narrowing it down to a few games, and as I eliminate them, I thought I'd say why those games are not my GOTY. Sometimes trival, mostly big, these reasons I couldn't really get past that made me dock it a point or two. Anyway, let's get to the eliminating. Oh, and SPOILERS AHEAD

I'm not kidding either...

I'm serious

First Elimination: Fable II
I loved Fable II, a lot. Then...the end happened. The ending really ticked me off for a number of reasons. First off, the final encounter is...weak at best. And you may or may not kill him, depending on if you like long-winded dialogue. But let's add another layer on that. You have 3 choices on where you want to go from there. You can only continue on one, and this is because you can only have one save file per Hero (a problem I have with the game), and 2 of those choices gets rid of a main game mechanic the game has, the Dog.

The dog is very helpful, and basically if you don't have the Dog, you can't complete the game. This is by far the worst game design choice I've seen of the year. Why punish the gamer forever by removing something you've built a large portion of your game around? It makes no sense. Because of that, it cannot be my Game of the Year.

The World Ends With You
This is a game that I loved early in the year on the DS. I think it's best handheld game in years as well. This game is very innovative, the music is great, and the controls are unique. The story is also very compelling as well. But, it's on a handheld. I feel like this game should be on a console, because the controls, despite being good, it's not something you can pick up and play on the road. This is a sit down in a chair for 15 minutes kind of game. Anywhere else doesn't work. Also, once you're done with it, there's no real drive to come back and play it. The difficulty ramps up near the end, and really sucks the air out of your sails for the game, and I guess that is part of the reason I haven't picked it up in 3 months. Because of that, I can't really say it's my Game of the Year.

Keep in mind, I'm not going in any particular order here. Just ones that come to mind that make me say 'nope, not the best I've played this year'.

TWEWY. I say keep it.

the pick up and play aspects of TWEWY are the battles. You may not have time to continue in the game while you're waiting for the bus or at the doc office but you can spend that time and do a couple of battles. The collection aspects of that game are addictive. I found myself spending weeks just leveling up my pins figuring out which ones would grow and which ones i had to let marinate over night to grow. I always ended up with one set for boss fights (best pins) one set for fighting (to grow) and one set for overnight (sleeping PP).

in terms of controls I'll agree with you there are times when pins wouldn't fire off the way you wanted them to or it was hard to drag Neku and not set off a drag pin.

I'll also consider that as much fun as I have playing that game in short busts it's not something I could play standing up.

The story does expand once you beat it and soon as I finish some other games I'm eager to see how it does that. Plus there's a ton of pins I never got to maximize in the time I was playing. I didn't find it difficult until the very last stage personally.
