Is the Wii killing you?

When the Wii first came out, I absolutely had to have one at any cost. I was the first gamer chick on my block with one and I reveled in retelling the war story of how my wii ownership came to be. How I was the 3rd in the ToysRUs line that fateful morning and the store manager only had 5 to sell. How I brandished my pre-order wii receipt much like Charlie did with his Golden Ticket until the first consoles became available for sale. And after my DNA made contact with it, the only way I'd part with it would be for Obi-Wan to come back from the dead and offer me his lightsaber for it. Add in the Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess and it was the best of times.
Two years later, and my mighty conquest collects dust in my living room. It glows blue from time to time like a lonely cylon hybrid toaster living in a world with no sliced bread, and I use it sparingly - primarily when I need some online game assistance while playing my 360. I over hear a few other wii owners at work gleefully talk about theirs all time. One guy invites his friends over almost every weekend for wii parties - and they play wii sports the entire duration. Matter of fact, it's the only wii game he owns. You've probably heard this story before. Another co-worker just bought one so she could do the same -- more wii party nights. It's the in thing to do apparently. And instead of being happy to have fellow wii owners in my midst, I'm nauseated. Ill. It's like a disease, a cancer of this planet. It's a plague, Mr. Anderson. It's like finding out that your mother's been working in the porn industry via a bad google image search. What happened? I am a passionate gamer - I game every chance I get. Matter of fact, I've been shooting zombies all week in L4D. But every time I hear anything related to these multiplayer wii crap games, I die a little inside. Someone actually invited me to one of these social gatherings and I swear I threw up a little in my mouth. What has happened to the Wii is just unholy now - totally pimped out to the masses - it's like Nintendo sold their soul to the devil or something. Am I the only one out there that feels this way? Any thoughts? |

How I got my Wii: was at work (on the day of launch) and my friend/co-worker came up to me and said "Danny, I'm holding a Wii for you and one for me." "Guess I'll buy it..."
End of story. So I wasn't anticipating it, but had wad of cash and wanted to say I had it...And I was still disappointed. Few gems here and there (Blast Works and No More Heroes come to mind) and a few titles next year have my attention, other then that though, if this was the one console I had to live with in this generation...I Think I'd be less of a gamer. |

Aside from just starting Bully, I don't play my wii often (surprise, surprise). When friends are over, Brawl gets played since 1) they haven't played it yet and/or 2) it's the sole reason they want a wii.
I think I played Wii Sports less than a handful of times, crazy to see how a tech-demo could become so popular. Oh yea, everybody wants a wii...and that's already packed in w/ 5 games! Just wait to see what's gunna happen next gen...sigh |

Yeah, my Wii has been dead since the beginning of the year. Brawl and No More Heroes were pretty fun, and late '07 games like RE: Umbrelle Chronicles and Trauma Center: New Blood kept me playing for a while. But recently, I haven't even turned it on. Oddly enough though, Q1 '09 looks to have a few third party games worth checking out. I know I'm looking forward to Onechanbara, MadWorld, and House of the Dead Overkill.

I'm sort of still wanting to get one because of Mario galaxy and zelda. But still. Seeing as Nintendo just keeps screwing hardcore gamers big time in the @ss on top of their HUMUNGUS piles of money... i ... i think i'll at least wait a good amount of time before investing.

I'll be honest that it certainly bothers me with how popular Wii is and the stuff people buy. It sickens me to see so much shovelware and people buying it over great stuff.
But outside of that, I'll be honest that I didn't have anywhere near as high expectations for the Wii as most people. Since a Nintendo platform hasn't really dominated my gaming since the SNES, I wasn't exactly thinking Wii would bring me back either. I just played to eventually get one. While I do hate that its graphics look terrible on my HDTV and I am addicted to some online features the PS3/360 has, I'm still fine with owning my Wii and don't plan to ditch it (unless I'm really desperate). I played a few games I enjoyed for it. I really liked Mario Kart Wii this year and it's definitely one of my top 10 favorites (I wasn't that big into Brawl though). Bomberman Blast and Dr. Mario RX Online from Wii Ware were fun. There are some games I'd still like to pick up sometime. But I do like how the Wii is a little different and gives me a slightly different experience. The only way I'd be a big Wii gamer is if there was no PlayStation around. |

We just got a Wii for xmas and we are loving it so far. Sorry it didn't work out for you. I guess it depends on what you like, and perhaps also when you get in - we aren't watching titles come out - there are already a lot of really good titles for us to chew on, including good WiiWare titles. I think we got in at the right time. Heck, we are pretty overwhelmed with the stuff we have now and there is plenty more to get.

Welcome to the world of mainstream. I first started having some experiences with this in Guitar Hero. While I enjoy that some of my friends know a song or two by Metallica, Van Halen, etc., it bothers the crap out of me that when one of those songs comes on the radio or something, all they think is "That's the song on Guitar Hero!" It's as if they don't even care about the song itself (not to mention all the other songs by the artist), just the fact that it's in Guitar Hero/Rock Band/whatever. This helped me decide that mainstream is generally a bad thing, because most of the mainstream is filled with people who have no appreciation (or at least a reason why NOT to like something) for whatever area it is.
But I agree with you completely. What's even more disgusting to me is the fact that some people (including a friend of mine) consider themselves hardcore gamers because they play their wii a fair amount. I'd be fine with that if they played respectable games like Metroid Prime 3, Zelda, Galaxy, etc., but they don't. Instead, they play shovelware games (i.e.-Carnival Games) and what not. The mainstream-ness of the wii is one thing. To disgrace the term "hardcore gamer" is something completely different. |

I wanted a wii since it was released, but got pretty bored with it, I enjoyed some games like Zelda, since I didn't own a NGC, but basically I think Nintendo is killing the industry, since everyone is so crazy about the console and getting whatever game it got released for it, we get a lot of cheap titles and really less good games to play with it, there are a few exceptions but every year you see less and less games who are good for it.

@Nathan_sama it's sad but true. it's truely shameful that I now consider the gamecube the "good old days"
dudette you aren't alone. the Wii could be good if they only put out games for it instead of party collections. they say 2009 looks better. and I hope it is. |

My wii hasn't been turned on since June, whereas I played my 360 today.
The bottom line is that nintendo realized that they make more money catering to old ladies, little kids, and soccer moms because they have more money to blow than most of the "hardcore gamers," and I don't see anything wrong with that. Just let nintendo make a shit load of money from soccer moms and go play your 360 or PS3. ^_^ |

I pre-ordered my Wii @ a local Gamestop so no need to wait during launch day. Anyways, i still play my wii system since day 1.

I believe that the Wii is a good complement to a 360/PS3. If it's your only system, then it may be a problem. When I'm not in the mood to play a big game, it's nice to play something casual on the Wii. But the Wii does have some decent titles that not many know about. De Blob is a game that I think everyone should play. It's the perfect game to wind down with.

I got the Wii early on because I could still apply a $50 coupon from circuit city to it (without having to argue with the clerks).
That being said, I got the Wii not because I thought it would get all the good games, but because I knew it was going to get games that weren't going to be on the other systems, like Trauma Center. And while I haven't played it in a while, that's only until I beat Persona 4, then move onto the sequel to Tales of Symphonia. |

The Wii in my opinion has become a thing where New comers can just jump in and say they are gamers now. The Wii is now just a party machine, the replacement to the Karaoke machine if you will.
I find the Wii to be a console that can only be enjoyed with other people, and this is true. Most consoles are enjoyed with other people, but the Wii is dependent on that. Motion Controls. Those two words probably brought, OMG and WTF to people as they heard Nintendo's new console would include these features. Well.... It's not that great. Trying to play Wii Boxing is just annoying, and quite frankly just requires you to flail your arms and hope you hit your opponent. I hear basically no good things about the Wii from gamers. True gamers, the one's that have been playing games for years. I have been playing video games since I was 2 or 3. Now I'm 14. That's basically 11-12 years under my belt of gaming. You don't have to be gaming for as long as I and others have been, but you can't just jump into gaming and instantly call yourself a Gamer. You have to indulge yourself in the world of games, live with other consoles, and truly experience what playing video games is all about. The Wii is simply the new party machine, and I quite frankly don't want to be a part of the party. Nintendo could have done a lot more with this console, and given the Gamers a chance to enjoy the console. There are probably a few (well a bit more then that), of games that are actually worthwhile for Gamers to play, and those games are the ones that have been around since the early days of gaming. Hopefully Nintendo pulls itself back up next generation, and offers something for Gamers, and New Comers. Don't get me wrong, I do like people getting into Gaming, but it's just the Wii that has dissapointed me and others. Maybe... just maybe Nintendo can make it up to us. Maybe it's just my lack of games, or maybe I just don't like the console. |

Do not fret, for many feel the same way. I also happily partake in lunging onto Survivors and tearing their guts out on a regular basis as of late, but while ripping through their flesh, I can't help but think of my Wii at times, how it's been two years now since we've been together... how all the dust collected on you could be mistaken as a custom Steel Gray finish... how the same two AA batteries have been residents inside our Wiimote for months... and I can't help but think, "Wii, what has the world done to us? We showed such promise in the beginning, and now it feels as if a promise between us has been unkept. This is not our future that we foresaw."
It's partly my fault too, I could be going out and getting some of its good games, like No More Heroes, and... and... oh, and Zack&Wiki... but the incentive is just not there for me. To quote Gus from Disney's Recess after he got bored playing with his toy airplane, "Oh, what's the use..." While I am going to get more Virtual Console games, and while I'm sure these, the games borrowed from other systems, will be awesome, it's just... I never thought I'd see the day when my Nintendo would be targeting my mom more than me. I miss the Nintendo64 days. Let us commend the console that was magical to the very last 64th bit. *Raises glass of Lon Lon* Cheers old friend, may your descendant someday resemble the pillar of glory that is you |

What I dislike the most is that I stood in line for about 4-5 hours on a Saturday morning to get it from TRU. It was good for a bit, but there are only around 10-15 games that are worth playing on the console.
The rest is just party and bullsh*t as Biggie says, but not the good kind. Such a shame to see the king of gaming dethroned in a way like this. They started falling of last generation and I thought this would be the great comeback, but it was not. |

For the person saying "Zak and Wiki" and NMH is that a joke? There are a few more. What about "Cursed Mountain", HOTD Overkill, Fragile, Arc Rise Fantasia, Ghost Squad, Fatal Frame 4? Also what system would you even see graphics resembling "Madworld" on? You'll note it was on neither the 360 or PS3 because I suppose something that looked so different and was in b&w regardless of how cool it looked they figured was too much of a risk to put the budget out for.
As for the 64 fondness is that a joke? I look at the Gamecube with more fondness then the 64 given it had little to no RPG's. Quest 64 wasn't great and to some that would be putting it mildly. Ogre Battle 64 was one of the best RPG's on the 64 quite frankly. It's arguably the best Ogre Battle out there, at least with the official moniker. For the good games out there the 64 had i'm thinking most of the Nintendo one's obviously. Goldeneye, Perfect Dark, Conker's Bad Fur Day, Resident Evil 2, Hybrid Heaven isn't bad and has some interest to me. What else? I'd heard Winback is good, Paper Mario is suppose to be classic. Oh yeah and I forgot F-Zero. Granted I didn't think of all of em'. For the Gamecube I LIKE "Luigi's Mansion", "Lost Kingdoms 2", "Tales Of Symphonia"(BATTLE system mainly), F-Zero, "SoulCalibur 2", Metroid Prime 1 and 2, Windwaker, PN03, etc. |

Meh. They found a cash cow, so they are milking it. Yea it sucks they aren't making more "hardcore" games but if you look at it most game developers don't see the Wii as a game selling platform. Unless it's a wii party type game. Maybe the Wii U will change that but lets be realistic, nope. Nintendo knows at this point it's too late to try and fight Microsoft and Sony. They really should consider just going fully into handheld and making games for the other two. However that won't happen unless the Wii U flops hard. It won't btw.
