Three Things on Thursday

Thank goodness the holidays are over. My Christmas... I got four things. A 6 day survival kit for my car, a sonicare toothbrush, a silly little magnetic toy stocking stuffer, and Dead Space for PS3. Yeah. At least I needed the sonicare toothbrush since my old one died. Oh well at least my folks mean well. Maybe next year I'll get time at a gun range or signed up for some sort of outdoor survival class.
Mediocre, delayed Christmas out of the way, it's Three of the Best Mid-Bosses. Lu Bu Do NOT persue Lu Bu. It's pretty much the most memorable line of Dynasty Warriors 3. You veterans of The Battle of Hou Lou Gate know what I mean. What makes Lu Bu such a great Mid Boss is the terror and hilarity he brings. He's not the final boss, hell you don't even have to fight him, you can just avoid him in just about any battle he shows up in. Still your troops tremble and run in fear, and sure he's toughter then nails, but it's just all so sillly. Big man, big horse, silly twintail headress. You can't play any of the Dynasty Warriors games without laughing from the over the top nature. And thanks to the internet, I've discovered there is silly four part OVA about Lu Bu getting turned into a modern day loli in Japan called Ryofuko-chan. The Turks Those magnificent bastards. A shining example of Mid-Boss-ness. You never beat The Turks in Final Fantasy 7. Sure it might have looked like you had but they just decided to go home before you embarrassed yourself further. That air of cool and self-importance you could never penetrate. Sure they might have worked for the bad guys, but chase after you on their vacation? Orders are orders, and you don't follow orders on vacation. Mid Boss A final boss never appears early! The best you can hope for is being a Mid Boss! Poor Vyers you don't even get to keep your name. Beat on, made fun of, and always humiliated. But that's his role. What makes him memorable. He's a Mid Boss with no shame and what makes him great is, besides his ridiculous lines, is the implication that he isn't that brainless. Well I'm out of words, and shameless off to find who is subbing Ryofuko-chan. So next week, Three Things that need to change in JRPGS. |
