A lot of you got new MP3 players for the holidays. Congratulations. You can now block out the world. You're not missing much. Besides listening to your own music instead of the same five songs on the radio, players can be used to listen to podcasts. These talk shows replace sports and right-wing politics, the only two formats allowed in talk radio. Listed below are the podcasts I listen to. Use it as a handy guide to A) get started on shows you may like, B) discover new podcasts you never heard of, or C) as something you use to make fun of Karl yet again. All three options are perfectly valid. You can find them by searching on iTunes, Zune, or the web.
60-SECOND SCIENCE Breaking science news presented as fast facts. Good for water cooler talk. If you have a water cooler. Otherwise, go into any random office building. THE ADAM CAROLLA SHOW Podcast rebroadcast of his syndicated west coast radio show. Wittier and smarter the Howard Stern and Opie & Anthony with a common guy attitude you can relate to. How entertaining of a host is Adam? His favorite subjects are tools, sports, and cars. And "I" am still compelled to listen! But Teresa and Bald Brian keep him on other topics too. His rants are genuinely angry and funny at the same time. AOTS: FRESH INK ONLINE A video podcast of G4TV host Blair Butler talking comics in more detail then she gets to on 'Attack of the Show'. THE BUGLE Two funny British chaps, one in the colonies and the other in Mother England, talk current events. For fans of The Daily Show. Especially since one of them is on that. CAGCAST The podcast of CheapAssGamer.com. The best of the non-pro game podcasts. (By pro I mean industry or journalist.) A no spin zone. Cheapy D and Wombat don't care who they offend by saying something sucked or, more importantly, wasn't worth the price. One of the few game sites that remembers most people have a budget and can't buy everything. CRANKY GEEKS Top level journos and executives talk tech. Like listening to business guys while you're caddying for them. DC COMICS Rarely updated but they record their entire comic convention panels. Unfortunately the audio quality is sometimes really bad. This could be so much better, but for now good enough. THE FEED I could watch Layla Kayleigh read the phone book. But she runs down news topics I care about in this video podcast - movies, TV, comics, games, internet, etc. So it's a double win for me. GET-IT-DONE GUY'S QUICK AND DIRTY TIPS TO WORK LESS AND DO MORE Not Larry the Cable Guy. It's simple self improvement productivity tips. GIANT BOMBCAST The podcast of GiantBomb.com. The best of the games journalist podcasts. Not tainted by corporate masters. GRAMMAR GIRL'S QUICK AND DIRTY TIPS FOR BETTER WRITING I hope these short grammar lessons stay in my brain. Reading this is proof they don't. But hope continues. HAPPY TREE FRIENDS Video podcasts of cute adorable cartoon woodland critters coming to ends that would make Itchy & Scratchy cringe. IFANBOY This entry covers both their audio and video podcasts which are on seperate subscriptions. The best discussion about comics in cyberspace bar none. If comic shops were populated with more guys like these, they wouldn't have such a stigma. NO AGENDA My podcast of last resort but sometimes entertaining. Want to hear a total nutjob? Ex-MTV Veejay Adam Curray believes pretty much every conspiracy out there. NOVA The podcast of the PBS science show. A little dry but short so it's not too bad. OFFICIAL DISNEYLAND RESORTS PODCAST A mix of audio and video podcasts, this highlights whatever's new or happening at Disney. Sometimes its censored happiness is just PR but they often have a lot of cool behind the scenes info. THE ONION The best fake news on the planet. OXM PODCAST The Official Xbox Magazine podcast. You kind of have to have an Xbox to enjoy this. Presented in a morning radio tone but not the obnoxious ones. Dan and Ryan are totally self aware and likeable. And every show has two contests for you to win stuff. PC MAG RADIO Computer talk coming out of NYC instead of California. Since it's "PC" I wish they wouldn't talk about Apple so much but they usually discuss the latest products with good insights. PLATFORM BIASED Gaming podcast told for the QA testers point of view. Kind of neat to hear their insights. THE SKEPTICS GUIDE TO THE UNIVERSE Really smart people debunk psuedo science. Sometimes it's depressing because you realize how many stupid people there are in the world, but the hosts are funny and personable. THE SGU 5X5 A companion piece to the above podcast. For five minutes they break down one psuedo sciene topic. Meant for classrooms but a good listen on its own. THE SWORD AND LASER A podcast book discussion group. Usually science fiction or fantasy. TECH 5 Five minutes to hear all the latest tech headlines. TEKZILLA A video podcast that takes the place of the old 'Screen Savers' TV show. Co-host Veronica Belmont is nerd girl dream material. THIS WEEK IN TECH Speaking of 'The Screen Savers', Leo Laporte is the old host of that show. His excitement is infectious. TOM VERSUS THE FLASH Formerly 'Tom Versus The JLA'. Tom reads old Silver Age comics to the audience. He goofs on them, but it's coming from a place of affection not jock disdain. WINDOWS WEEKLY Paul Thurrott and I are the lone Microsoft fanboys in the world. Kidding. He's all to ready to call out Microsoft on its errors but his POV is that Windows is a lot better then most people give it credit for. XBOX LIVE'S MAJOR NELSON Unlike Nintendo and Sony, Xbox has a public face that interacts with the fan base. Maybe the genuine nicest guy in podcasting. YOU LOOK NICE Funny podcast just for funny's sake. No direction. If you've got something I might like, please share. I'm looking for a good movie news or TV discussion but haven't ones I like yet. |

You listen to ALL of these? Do you have time to do anything else or do you just multitask?

I drive for work so I actually run out of shows to listen to. It's this or FM radio. You couldn't make me go back to radio.

Good list, here are some ones I listen to that aren't on it:
Blizzcast - Since I like blizzard I listen to this. It's a rare one but not too bad. Bungie Studios - They don't just talk about halo and they can usually be pretty funny. Penny Arcade - Sometimes they'll put up podcasts where they talk for a half hour or so trying to figure out the next comic strip. Can be interesting and funny. The Instance - Another wow podcast. Smodcast - Kevin Smith & Scott Mosier. Almost always funny. 1up Podcasts - /salute :( |

wcraigw, I too listented to 1Up Yours but I don't think it's continuing. Maybe. Garnett wasn't fired. We shall see.
Funny thing about Kevin Smith is that I grew up in his area and am his age. We didn't run in the same circles but I saw him enough that I find it funny when people make a big deal about him. |
