"State and local lawmakers picketed the New York Post building Wednesday in protest of a political cartoon they say is outright racist.Days after a chimpanzee on a rampage was fatally shot in Connecticut, the cartoon shows police officers shooting a chimp and hinting that the ape is the author of the federal stimulus bill."
"Critics say it infers that President Barack Obama is a monkey, and that it plays into an age-old stereotype and is outrageous and irresponsible. They are now calling on the paper to apologize." here the vid/pix http://www.ny1.com/content/top_stori...n/Default.aspx |

George Bush can be compared to a monkey on a daily basis with no problems, but heaven forbid Barack Obama be the butt of a joke.

This was just terrible. I'm surprised it was even published
@ sokmaster/camelking, you guys do realize there is a shitty time in our history when blacks were represented as apes right? To make things even worse, the ape was killed by two white cops... |

That is over. Things have in many minds and hearts changed, obviously. Would 2 black cops change anything?

Can it be thought of as racist? Yes. Can it be thought of as not racist? Yes.
It just depends on what you think of the cartoonist. Does he hate people based on the color of their skin or does he hate people based on the way they throw money at national problems? |

The comic was in bad taste. This isn't the first time that New York Post has been under fire.

Definitely in bad taste. I think this is only racist to people who want to see racism in everything. Lets not forget President Obama did not write the stimulus bill, that jewel of a bill was written by the house democrats. So could we say this cartoon is sexist? And that the illustrator is comparing Nancy Pelosi to a chimp? Of course not. I think this is a case of projection. However, it is in horrible taste, and there had to be a more effective way to make the point as to what a bad bill the illustrator thinks the stimulus package is.

When you quote "it infers that President Barack Obama is a monkey", who are you quoting? Was that in the original article b/c it's not there now. I'm interested in whether they edited this stigmatized use of "infer."

If it wasn't meant to be racist then I'm not sure what the chimp shooting has to do with the stimulus bill. Was this from an SNL writer? Someone please let me know.

I'm usually not offended by much, but I found that comic to be in poor taste. Someone's going to get fired.

This is racist. The monkey being shot has nothing to do with the bill and Obama is the face of the bill seeing how he is pushing it and the president. I don't see how one could not see this as racist or atleast made by someone that should not be making comics like this in the first place if they do not know their american history.

No one is going to get fired over this. The NY Post is owned by the same people who own Fox News, Rupert Murdoch. I'm not going to say whether or not the comic is racist, but Murdoch is none too fond of Democrats and I really don't think he'd mind if it were.

I don't see it as Racist. I can see how it could be taken that way, but I think the author disagrees with the Stimulus Bill and is just saying that a monkey could write a Bill like that, not calling Obama a monkey.
More or less like the old saying about having a room full of 100 monkeys taking 100 years to write Shakespeare. |

I'm bothered by the depiction of our Commander in Chief being shot. Racist or not, that's
ed up. And for the record, I'm going with racist: "Crude historical depictions of African Americans as ape-like may have disappeared from mainstream U.S. culture, but research presented in a new paper by psychologists at Stanford, Pennsylvania State University and the University of California-Berkeley reveals that many Americans subconsciously associate blacks with apes. I'm getting sick and tired of hearing about racism in places where it's not. That comic, on it's own, is in no way racist. Take the fact that our current president is black out of the picture. He's an unknown skin color, and the comic changes none whatsoever. People are just bringing skin color into the picture. Even if the author is racist, the comic itself is in no way racist. However, then you could say that the comic was racially motivated. (ie. the only reason it was done was because the president is black)
