Toys R Us starts cashing in on the Used Games market |
15072 views |
![]() I was at Toys R Us today and I saw this sign by the door. I'm not exactly sure when they started taking in trades. I didn't specifically asked but I did saw some games on one of the walls in the R Zone. I think at this time they are only giving store credit for all trade-ins. I think its a smart move seeing as how Gamestop took $8.8 billion in 2008 in over all sales but mostly in used game sales. Update: I didn't realize how much attention this little news would get. So I asked my wife if she took a second picture to show the fine print. She did. Basically the fine print states that they will not take games that are rated "A" and games must be in their original cases. I'm pretty sure they do but I hope they don't. Oh, and make sure the disc is not cracked (lol). I saw a bunch of RockBand 1 $29.99 for the 360. And a few Puzzle Quest for $17.99. Which are kind of odd because it looked like they took the seal off and resealed them and sold them used (doesn't this practice sound familiar *cough* GS *cough*). They reseal all the used games and attach a security patch/sticker in the back. ![]() So I called the store today and asked specific questions about the program. I was told that it started 4 weeks ago and it last about 12 weeks. And its basically a test to see if they want to continue doing it. When I asked if they accept the old Xbox games she said that they accept every game. Again im not sure how many stores they're doing this test to, but the one I went to last night was this one: TOYS"R"US - NANUET [6325] 122 EAST ROUTE 59 NANUET, NY 10954 Phone: (845)624-8282 Hours: Sun 10:00am-7:00pm Mon-Fri 10:00am-9:00pm Sat 9:00am-9:00pm |

Nice find! I'm assuming that fine print says they will only accept games with case and manual and won't accept scratched discs.

Wow, pretty awesome. Having more B&M stores to buy used games from is a good thing.

I hate to be a party pooper, but as soon as the publishers get wind of this, they are going to start threatening TRU just like they did Best Buy.

Best Buy, Circuit City, and Now TRU enter the used game fray; it is a good idea on paper but the devil is in the details. Used game have an awsome markup and are a potential gold mine, but if you do not know what you are doing (like FYE or Circuit City), they can be more inventory that they will have to blow out. I agree that the publishers will start to pressure them as well, with the poor earnings across the board from publishers last year (at least US publishers) I hear the war drums being pounded for used games again.

Toys R Us used to do this a long time ago. I remember trading in a ton of SNES games and hardware for "Geoffery Bucks" (store credit) to purchase my N64. Nice to see it come back.

Oh hell yeah I remember the 16-bit Geoffrey Bucks days! I got my N64 for almost nothing because of that deal. I just hope TRU does what Blockbuster used to and offers some inflated TIVs for some flipping opportunities.

As much as it's great for us gamers to see Toys 'R Us jumping into the used gaming business, isn't it a little worrisome that they have to resort to it?
I sense foreshadowing in this; it's like when CC jumped into the Geeksquad business with Firedog. Would hate to see TRU tank, but I'm pretty naive with the economy as it is now. |

Very nice to hear. This could be a pretty nice motivation for GS to stop pulling the BS tactics they do. I'd assume TRU is going to be one the first things a parent thinks of when their kid tells them they want to trade in their games.

Hmmm... that's true actually; the 'rents will probably want the kids (especially the younger ones) to head to Toys 'R Us since it's more "family friendly."

All companies need to find ways to generate revenue in this economy. This one makes pretty good sense, in my view. They invest a little cash (paying you for your games) and make a big return by flipping them. Also, TRU arguably holds a better reputation than GS so parents will be more willing to do their transactions there. It gets people in the store, costs are relatively low, they open up a new "market" for their business, and since it's store credit, they turn more inventory in their stores. They will need some smart guys to manage it, though- setting the right price points (both to the seller and buyer) and figuring out how to change their new game inventory to maximize sales (for the same title, want fewer new ones in inventory, assuming a certain amount of used ones will sell).
I for one am very interested in this as I've got a lot of games to unload and did not want to go to GS for many of the reasons seen here on CAG. Wishing TRU the best of luck... |

That's cool. If I had a TRU in my area it might affect me, even!
