Capcom Unity Card - Part II: Things are Looking Up ^_^

I don't take back everything I said about the CAPCOM Unity Card, but I do take back MOST of what I said. Why the big change of heart? Well, I'll tell you why

Today at 1:05 PM on the way back from picking my wife up from work on her lunch break, my phone rang. The number was showing an odd (630) area code and I figured it was probably either a wrong number, a scam artist, a random Gamestop reminder about some pre-order I forgot I placed, or a genuine call. Out of curiousity, I answered. It turns out that it was a representative from West Suburban Bank (the people who run the CAPCOM Unity Card) and I could only imagine where this was going.

Rather than getting chewed out for my highly negative post here on CAG yesterday, I got a very welcomed apology. The representative (named Doug for the record) was very apologetic for the way the card company had treated me and let me know that this is not normal for them. The CAPCOM Unity Card is a service that is meant to be a "fan service" not a "fee service" as he put it. It's a way to reward fans for their loyalty as well as allow them to reasonably control their spending and monitor their buying in a fashion that rewards them.

He also pointed out that my blog post actually pointed them in the direction of finding a few problems with their program. Certain fees in the program were not authorized and a few things they did (including charging me to activate the card over the phone) were not legit. Doug told me that he would reverse the fees (and he did, immediately) and wanted me to know that this is a brand new program and there are still some kinks being worked on in the meantime. He thanked me for posting the blog post (he actually mentioned my blog post by name and said they were monitoring these types of sites all the time for feedback) and asked if I had any further questions.

I asked him a number of things and the one thing I learned that is really useful is that you can add money via Direct Deposit from your workplace for no fee. You will earn points for every dollar deposited as well as points for the actual direct-deposit action as well. All the funds are FDIC insured and the points will be available on the site once they clear.

I feel a LOT better now about the program and am going to consider keeping my account with them now to see how things go. Now that I have nearly all my credit back, I will try to use it a bit and give you guys an update within the next couple of weeks.

For now, all I can say is Thank you to Doug and the team over at West Suburban Bank for monitoring these sites. I think it's incredible that my little post garnered so much interest over there and that you were able to actually link me to my account without me actually posting my name or numbers or anything (a bit creepy lol, but still very impressive). Thank you ever so much.

Seriously. The power of CAG is incredible. He went like ten minutes and all I'm thinking in the back of my head is "Obviously he read my blog...they must be pissed" and he says "We wouldn't have known about your problems if it wasn't for your blog post" and I'm thinking ... "WOW". The power of the Internet folks

For the record, I Google'd "Capcom Unity Card" and my negative blog came up as #8 on the search. The first ones were all like PR releases and press releases and the official site and there at #8 was my CAG Blog. Pretty incredible ^_^

So for all you naysayers and blog haters, these rants do occasionally get positive recognition and attention from the companies that read them. You have nothing to lose

I'm curious as to how they linked your blog to your account. I agree with the creepy aspect of that.

The only thing I can think of is that I'm a relatively new member and that they tracked me based on my fees that I posted (I literally copy/pasted them from the member page from their site).

So with a few bits of information (registration date, fees, etc.) they could probably figure it out really quickly. Still incredibly fast for them to track me down and contact me. Very big-brother-esque Luckily, for once, it worked in my favor.

Well you did post the dates and the amounts of the transactions. So it would be pretty easy to put 2 and 2 together.

Definitely zenprime. I'm glad I did now in retrospect =) Nobody is anonymous online anyway, just keep that in mind folks ^_^

Pretty impressive that they found your blog.

I have an interest in the Unity card, but not with all those fees. I'd really like to see them get rid of the "Monthly Maintenance Fee" and either removing the "Dormancy Fee" or extending it to something like 182 days.
goomba478's Avatar
I agree. I think that with a little tweaking I'll be totally fine with it. Because if you use it enough that the rewards were to out-grow the fees, it'd be worth it. He mentioned that it's in a sort of trial phase, so maybe if enough people whine about these things they will make changes where necessary.

I agree the dormancy fee is absolutely ridiculous (charge you for not using your card?), but some of the fees I can see (POS fees do cost the company money after all). But perhaps with some smart shopping and learning the ropes this card can be useful to CAPCOM fans.

Time will tell. Let me experiment and report to you guys. I will be a sort of CAG reporter in that sense
distgfx's Avatar
Really? When they remove some of the more ridiculous fees then I may consider the card.

I can't vouch for what changes are coming or what fees will be changing. All I know is that my contact, Doug, did say that some of the fees were not authorized or that they were mistakenly printed in a fashion that were not accurate. So in some way, shape or form, the fees should be modified in the near future. At least we can hope so
That is too wierd, however I am still unrelenting in my avid boycott of anything capcom I remain stedfast and until I see a larger change I will not hesitate to say so.
doug here from the bank.

thanks a ton goomba for posting about your experience. we really do appreciate ALL feedback - good and bad - to help us refine the card! we're still pretty early in our launch and your post helped us identify some problems that we're fixing right now.

we are aiming to provide a valuable and engaging Capcom fan experience (discounts, rewards and access) AND a cost effective banking experience. to this end we just posted a revised fees and limits schedule complete with tips on how to AVOID OUR FEES:

http://www.prepaidcardholder.com/fl/capcomfl.html

a few key points:

- sign up for free TXT messages about your balance to avoid declined transactions
- sign up for free direct deposit for fast and easy loading PLUS Capcom Unity points
- when checking out at a store ALWAYS select credit and sign for the purchase to avoid a PIN transaction fee and earn 0.5% cash back
- don't forget that using the card to make purchases from Capcom online will net you an instant 15% discount at checkout

by the way - it WAS your posting of the fees that enabled us to track you down. nothing too creepy :-)

we welcome your continued feedback and look forward to having you as a satisfied customer!

....wow. this is interesting. i'll look into the card now, but this level of customer service is, just... crazy cool.
goomba478's Avatar
Seriously reicaden, you're not kidding! ^_^ Doug, thanks again for contacting me and making this right. You've earned a TON of respect from me by doing so and it's nice to see companies taking us gamers seriously We are very loyal and dedicated customers when it comes to our hobbies of choice, and when treated properly we really do have quite a bit to offer financially.

They say that gaming is recession proof, and it's really true. A million times thank you for making things right ^_^

Very much awesome. Amazing that West Suburban Bank is checking out CAG. Do they have a CAG among their ranks? Its possible......

Very impressive that bankerdoug came out here and commented. That is what is defined as "above and beyond" the scope of his job. Customer service like that should be rewarded.

Watch the details

Hey we broke this article and got contacted from the rep as well here is our Consumer Union take on it

Excellent customer service, too bad the card is still crap
I don't like the fact that it costs you money to spend your money...
Wish these worked like gift cards and whatnot, but I guess the people who are in charge of the cards have to make money somehow :(
Wish my bank offered a debit card with Capcom graphics
No fees at all!

Also, glad to see something good come out of the CAG Blogs! Nice job goomba

People out there are actually reading our blogs and taking advice?! holy..

this is nuts. ive never seen this happen on CAG before. both the customer rep and the site that broke the story posted on this blog. wow.

Great Job Goomba. Its actually nice to know that some banks out there actually do legit service and actually fixed the faults in their service.

when Goomba gives it an A..ill probably jump in on it. I wish PNC would let me have Honda on my card...or alteast a Mets card would be nice.
