Kotaku, why don't you post this story on your blog?

Kotaku has taken to publicizing a much lesser quality copycat site called "cheap college gamers". Looking at the timestamps and deals posted on this site, all by admin "GoldenChild", it's pretty obvious that this is a site setup to siphon affiliate revenue from the site we all know and love: cheap ass gamer. The site lays claim to all the deals generated by this community without credit.

This is because of a longstanding grudge started by off the cuff remarks by CheapyD and Wombat on the cagcast, bemoaning the fact that most gaming blogs pickup stories carelessly without so much as checking the sources. They even went on to challenge the CAG community to come up with such posts, which was probably unfair to these sites. However, one of more accredited journalists in the gaming industry, Brian Crecente, took the bait and proved this point in spades.

Crecente picked up a story by an individual user blogging on this very site, and when he discovered that the blog was a joke, pointed out to the Kotaku readers that the entire community of CAG has lost their credibility.

It's interesting how the anger was misdirected, when clearly this was their own fault. Crecente has decided to hold a grudge rather than direct this energy towards improving himself as a journalist. The fact that he is now purposely blinding himself to CAG and instead going through an illegitimate site that is nothing but a cashgrab for the deal information our community generates proves that he's decided to make himself a worst journalist. In the internet age most gamers are savy enough to find the best information, and Kotaku intentionally misleading their readers to inferior sources is in the end will only hurt Kotaku.

I don't think it was fair of CheapyD to encourage deceit to a mutually benefitted site (in fact I found CAG through Kotaku), but the critical remarks were necessary and should have been made constructive by bloggers. I'm very turned off by Crecente, who has revealed himself to be a pretty poor journalist and petty individual.

I'm not reading Kotaku anymore and I implore other CAGs to do the same because much like:

Cheap Ass Gamer >> Cheap College Gamer

I find also find to be true that:

Joystiq >> Kotaku

If you happen to like a blog that checks their sources, is credible, and respects their readers then you'll find that Joystiq is superior to Kotaku.

The super bonus is that the CCG guy posted his affiliate link in his comment on Kotaku. Classy.

Yeah I've been calling them out on it each time it's done.

@CheapyD I have to back off a little and say Crecente should just give credit to whoever tipped him. I somehow envisioned him perusing this CCG site as a means of avoiding CAG, whereas in actuallity this CCG guy is emailing tips everyday trying to promote his shady site. I still say it's still irresponsible for Crecente to link to their site when he could link to amazon and just give the tipsters name. This guy is obviously only trying to make money stealing all the content off this site without credit, and who knows what extent he would go to do this (hopefully not fraud but I wouldn't be surprised). The least they could do if they didn't like CAG would be to link to slickdeals or someother reputable site. He is not contributing anything original to the gaming community. Supporting this guy is "pissing in the well".... 'cause CheapyD has gots to get paid so we can have a place to come and discuss deals and have a community.

The whole "battle" was blown out of proportion a bit. Sure Kotaku posted a false story and looked a little dumb. They got a mad and tried to cover it by making the comment about CAG not being reliable. It was a good joke that went a little wrong but for people to hate and boycott Kotaku seems excessive. There are some good personalities you will miss out on by not visiting their site. Bashcraft is a great writer and gives some good insight on the Japanese video game market. His posts alone are worth a visit.

I've deleted them from my RSS feed on my homepage. If they break an interesting story and the link is posted elsewhere I'll check it out, but I don't feel the need to go everyday or comment there anymore. I prefer joystiq because they're far less snarky, but also because they have a strict policy of not accepting gifts, and properly sourcing their material, and are light on the unfounded rumor posting, not only that they lobbied microsoft to include E74 errors. What a blog!?

I really like some of the personalities that have come and gone better than what's left at kotaku. Not too into the "look at where game company X sent me because I'm awesome" blog posts by Crecente. Seems like there is a lot of pretention over at the house of Gawker sometimes.

The answer is Joystiq or any other video game blog.

Loltaku/Slowtaku gripes aside, that CCG rip-off site is the height of douche-baggery. I can't imagine they make much, if any, affliate money, but it is pretty annoying that someone can get away with blatantly stealing info/referrals like that.

btw, does anyone/can anyone link me the story that got so much controversy?

ironically looking at the blog by desz he doesn't even have 20 posts on cag and everyone in the comments section called bullshit before it was picked up by the blogosphere. CAGs are on there pointing out all the flaws in the "evidence", not falling for it for even a second. There are even references to the contest that created the shitstorm in the comments. Crecente didn't even take the time to read the original article or comments. I'm sure he just cut and paste from all the other blogs. What a joke. We all make mistakes, but apparently we don't all learn from them.

CCG is shit and I've noticed Owen Good has posted more links to CAG after a few of us posters complained.

Also, Joystiq is much worse than Kotaku so I'm staying with Kotaku.

Yeah I've idly wondered if it pisses Cheapy off when other sites copy and paste from here and don't bother to list their source.
I guess it's the nature of journalism to feed off itself, on the internet even more so.

I haven't gone to Kotaku in years. Joystiq is a far better site if you want your news via blog.

I'm still pissed at the lack of a resolution. Cheapy seems to have gotten over it but has Crecente? Seeing as he's now crediting some shitty site from stubbornness.

Still boycotting Kotaku and proud of it.
