PROTOTYPE IGN REVIEW IS UP.....Should you care? |

I understand...a review is an opinion of one person....but please have some of the facts in there! So ign has now reviewed prototype, a game I have been waiting for in great anticipation, and they gave it a 7.5. Thats ok with me, 7.5 is not bad. My problem is that ign along with other professional gaming sites have decided that the faults of a game are more of the meat in their reviews than what it does right. This is an issue because good games become shunned due to the fact that we the gamers seem to follow in majority on reviews about 80% of the time. This is why good games that score low get no sequels or support. I have not played the game yet so I am handicapped in my defense but is so hard to state the fun facts of the game? Erik Brudvig usually does a great job on his reviews but this time he continually states how the graphics hurt the game....BUT WHAT ABOUT THE GAMEPLAY?? He gave the game an 8 for gameplay....which is pretty damn good. I think the problem is that reviews now seem so biased or overtly opinionated that they dont carry much weight anymore, so if they trully are a pro site....give me pro facts. He doesnt mention how the game runs at 60 fps with out any slowdowns, but does mention that it has graphics problems in the city itself. Come on....a sandbox game with subpar graphics is litterally almost all of them. I want to know about how it plays, since he obviously scored gameplay high enough to validate the core game. *Rant over The review is here ----------> http://xbox360.ign.com/articles/992/992950p1.html Im still getting it. It looks FUCKING awesome. -oswald |

They didn't get review copies for the PS3 or PC...not a good sign for those platforms. I'm guessing it's yet another 360 port.
I'll probably rent the game first. I only have a PS3 and I'm playing inFamous right now. However, a 7.5 score seems a bit high considering the reviewer had issue after issue with the game. Though, I wonder how many of them are legitimate. |

I only thought it was weird considering every other review so far has not given it anything below a 9. I read the review and It did seem like he talked mostly of the graphics and technical issues the game had.
One point he made that is somewhat idiotic was that he felt every main mission was like a mission from another open-world game, which I guess is true in a way considering hundreds of games have destroy all target missions, stealth missions, and escort missions, although none of these seemed to receive a lower score because of of having similar mission designs. Almost every FPS game is a move from point A to point B while killing everything in the way game but I don't see reviewers knocking off points for that. |

Eh, it seemed like a legitimate review to me. The overall message I came away with from it was that there are some really cool things you can do, but the game doesn't execute those ideas to their full potential and also becomes a little repetitive. If the graphics and other stuff weren't problems, I could see the game getting between an 8.0 and 8.9. But given that he's citing other things on top of the repetition, a 7.5 might be justified. That's not to say you can't enjoy the game; we all enjoy things sometimes that we know aren't games with incredible scores. It's more of a statement saying "beware" than anything.
Also, if you want to look at it from a numbers perspective, a 7.5 is not too bad, especially when considering he gave it a 5.5 for graphics and a 6.5 for both presentation and lasting appeal (which I think could have been a little higher given that a lot of games you can do everything in under 20 hours). The highest score he gave was an 8.0 for gameplay, so the fact that his overall score didn't deviate too much from the gameplay score says something in my opinion. |

I wonder if playing Infamous first really hurts how you will receive this game.

IGN AU just came out with their review at an 8.5
The biggest problem I had with the other review was that 5.5 for graphics and 6.5 for presentation. In other terms an F and a D. Yes, while there are some draw issues with buildings popping in and such and said buildings being ugly at times, this game is way better than a 5.5 on the graphical side. And did the reviewer ever mention that throughout the chaos (that he hated and talked about several times) that there is never a drop in framerate. Nope, that didn't matter to him I guess. I don't care if the score is 7.5 since that's a pretty good score in my book, but its those two sub-scores that get to me. I would have liked it if those scores were higher even if the overall score stayed the same. |

Metacritic has it at a 9.1 only based on 6 reviews though.

With a 7.5, might as well wait till the price comes down

Now after playing the game I think Im more in league with IGN AU than this review. The game is a fantastic joy to play. I loved Hulk Ultimate Destruction.....and quite honestly thats what this is. With much much much more depth in gameplay.

What's the real difference between Prototype and inFAMOUS anyway? They both look almost identical to me (at least the trailers do)...

It is important to write about the negatives of a game, even if you are scoring it relatively high. If a game gets a 9.5, people aren't going to be concerned with why it got marked down half of a point, but when a game that has had as much anticipation behind it as Prototype gets a 7.5, the readers are going to want to know why it is getting such an average score. Don't get too offended that the review focuses on the game's faults; it is only to make readers more aware of imperfections prior to purchase. What it seems to come down to is if you liked HULK: UD, then you'll like this game. And as for sequels, it's more based on sales than review scores, so as long as the sales match the preorders, Prototype will do just fine.
