Quick Impression - G.I. Joe Rise of Cobra

Against all of Wombat's CAGcast protestations, I went to see G.I. Joe Rise of Cobra yesterday morning. Given the lack of advanced reviews, and some negative buzz I was expecting the biggest crap fest since I saw Ultraviolet.

I was pleasantly surprised. No spoilers but here are some bullet points on good/bad.

Good
  • Casting was excellent
  • Dialogue was good, with few cringe worthy lines, "Knowing is half the battle" fit in well.
  • Sienna Miller was awesome as the Baroness - not just because she is hot, she played the part very well
  • Special effects were high quality and mostly believable
  • It wasn't a 90 minute toy advertisement
  • A fairly solid plot for 60 minutes given the source material
  • The plot recovers in the last 10 minutes
  • A good popcorn movie, I'd pay to see the sequel
Bad
  • Christopher Eccelston looked scarily thin
  • Cobra Commander's mask is lame -- should have gone with the hood
  • Sets in the Arctic had a cardboard Star Trek TOS feel -- Did they blow the budget?
  • G.I. Joe is a multinational strike force, no longer just America's Heroes -- this is due to the hope it will have bigger international box office
  • The plot falls off a cliff during 20 of the final 30 minutes
  • Cringe worthy "Yo, Joe!" worked into the dialogue.
  • Wraps up a little to nicely for a movie that hopes to have a multi-part franchise.
I didn't see a review from Shipwreck, but would be interested to hear his or any other CAGs feedback.

I was amazed it was actually not that bad. The trailer made the movie look horrible.
Hahaha, this was a total camp-fest that wasn't as bad as I thought it would be.

"Knowing is half the battle."

It is a weird trailer/ad campaign. Its like they looked for the worst parts for the ads.

I felt the opposite about the special effects, casting, dialogue, and its toy advertisement feel. Some scenes just looked horrible and designed solely to shill toys (such as all of the boats in the arctic area).

Totally agree with Mr. Ecko's poor delivery of "Yo, Joe!" And no "Cobraaaa!" moment made me sad -- especially when there was an awesome opportunity to do it towards the end.

Wow, that's an excellent summary list. I was certainly apathetic at first but now I'll be opening to watching it with friends if the opportunity should arise. Thanks!

I went into the theater to see this movie with the same expectations as the first Transformers: It'll probably be a load of crap, but I just hope it's funny and the action blows my socks off.

G.I. Joe wasn't as funny and it's action wasn't as "awesome", but I still liked it. The Ripcord/Scarlett dialog was good and the chase scene in Paris was totally worth it.

I never got into Transformers or G.I Joe when I was a kid so there was nothing that either of these movies had to do for me to accept them. Other than have funny dialog, mind blowing action, and good looking people. Things that bring a movie down for me are terrible acting, confusing plots, groan-worthy dialog. Hopefully the next G.I Joe movie can stay away from those last three things, unlike Transformers 2.

I just want to know one thing...

Did Sgt. Slaughter make a cameo?

Saw it myself today, had the same expectations as many mentioned. But I came out thoroughly enjoying the movie I had just seen. Fun/action flick, through and through. Loved it, the title "Rise of Cobra" really says it, all, despite the lame Mask, I loved how it all played out.

To me it TOTALLY felt like a Cobra Commander type move the way the whole thing panned out.

I cannot wait for the sequel.

@Zforce no Sgt. Slaughter cameo, but Brenden Frazer made a cameo as Flint I guess. He was dressed like Flint.

This was a great popcorn flick. Not much to think about, just hang on and enjoy the ride, don't expect anything Oscar worthy.

I want to see it, but Ryu is in his separation anxiety phase and Ai can't be gone for more than 15 seconds before he starts bawling his head off... (T_T) Have to wait for the blu.

Thanks for a quick review that avoids spoilers, I loved the toys as a kid so I'll probably check it out.
