Broken Firmware FTW?

Sony released it's long awaited Playstation 3 2.40 firmware update yesterday, and was immediately removed, as it lead to the bricking of vast amounts of Playstation 3 consoles.

PC World reports:
Quote:
Sony has pulled the latest PlayStation 3 firmware update after complaints that it is causing problems with the game console and sometimes bricking (cannot function in any capacity) PS3s.

There have been a number of people on the Sony PS3 forums who have described problems with the PS3 update made available just yesterday. One camp of PS3 users complain of their consoles are freezing up. Others have had better luck, but report once the firmware has been installed games such as Metal Gear Solid 4 will produce errors delivering a black screen.

As of this morning Sony has not said when it anticipates to have the problem solved or what, if anything, it is going to

I plan to write various blog posts on my life. I know I’m quite complicated, confusing, and strange, so I feel this blog at CAG should help people understand me better.

As a warning, this entry will be pretty boring. Some people already know this, but this is a better explanation of my situation.

In case you didn’t know, I graduated from Purdue University Main Campus with a degree in Electrical & Computer Engineering Technology. I’ll explain in another entry how that all went. Let’s just say I started off doing some job search, but stopped due to senior project trouble. My senior electronics project was important because if it did not work, I’d have to stay in college longer.

When summer started, my Dad asked me if I’d be interested in working some computer job for his friend. Basically, I’d have to use AutoCAD and other computer programs. I told him yes, since I enjoyed that stuff. Also, I was going to get paid somewhere around...

Cold Storage will be available for free beginning on July 7, Bungie Day, on Xbox Live

The new halo 3 Map Cold Storage will hit the ethereal Shelf Monday July 7. AKA Bungie Day.

from Bungie.net
Cold Storage will be available for free beginning on July 7, Bungie Day, on Xbox Live. Additionally, don’t forget to grab the one-day-only free gamerpics and theme on 7/7.
Beginning on July 7, there will be a 48-hour long seven-player FFA playlist in Halo 3’s Matchmaking where you can turn the calendar back to 2001 and control l Rockets, Invis and Snipe.
For now, Cold Storage will be implemented in regular rotation in playlists that require the Legendary Maps. To avoid confusion, playlists that previously required the Legendary Maps will now remind players that they need “all Maps” to participate, and since Cold Storage is free, it shouldn’t be a big deal for you to grab the map on July 7 and then return to your regularly scheduled business in SWAT.

Morning gaming?

Anyone finding themselves spending 20-30 minutes for some gaming before heading out to work? I've been going through a few events in Burnout Paradise now before I head off to work.

Any recommended games for play before dragging yourself out to 8 hours of filing reports?

What Was Your First Game?

If there is one thing I believe about games it's that the first one you play is the most important one you ever will. If your first game was a bad one I doubt you would even be reading this. If your introduction to games was a AAA game, odds are your not only reading this but have already writen what your first game was in the comments. To now ask the question officially, what was your first game and when did you play it? The answer for me....

My first memory of video games was getting the "Super Nintendo Starter Kit" when I was 5. The "SNSK" was a bundle that included the SNES itself, 2 controllers, all the hook-ups, and the kicker, Super Mario World. I remember playing it and thinking it was the most AMAZING(Chad Concelmo voice) thing I had ever seen. The next several years would have me lugging the thing to my Grand Ma's house on the...

Work Bloggin'

By y2jedi 07-03-2008 01:10 PM
Just got back to the office. Stopped into GS and picked up a UMD for my daughter to watch today while I finish my day at work. Bought Creature Comforts S1($5, not bad). We love Wallace & Gromit in our house, so I'm looking forward to her review once I get home.

Hopefully, it's as good a review as when I brought home Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure for my son last week. Nothing better than this conversation:

Me : "Didja watch Bill & Ted today?"

Him : "Yeah."

Me: "Whad'ya think?"

Him : "It was most triumphant, Dad."

Poor kid doesn't have a chance.

"Do You Really Want to Hurt Me?"

Game Informer keeps sending me two copies of the illustrious magazine, instead on the one I asked for. In the interest of Mother Erf, I call them to remedy this situation.

On the first twenty minutes I spend on hold, I hear:

- The main Halo theme
- Mario Bros. (Main theme, Underwater song and Star song)
- Sonic the Hedgehog's main theme
- "Do You Really Want to Hurt Me?" by the Culture Club.

Do answer their question: Yes, I want to hurt them. They've been making me hold for a over half an hour now. I want to rip the ears off their skulls and gouge their eyeballs- I want to finger paint with the blood from their entrails. Ok, Cool down...

Then customer service answers. I strongly believe that the mentally handicapped should be integrated in mainstream society, but why let these mongoloids answer the phones? It takes ten more minutes to fix a problem that should be resolved in thirty seconds.

Mmmmmmm, just had a Subway for lunch.

It was my standard Subway order, footlong Italian BMT with lettuce, tomato, cucumber, red onions and Honey Mustard dressing.

Bags of chips and a Dr Pepper to wash it all down.

I imagine I'll be "dropping some friends off at the coast" a bit later this afternoon

Soul Calibur on XBLA - Review part 2

By typeRJ 07-03-2008 12:45 PM
I wrote some stuff up after playing 10 minutes of it. Played another 1 1/2 hours and checked out all of the modes.

More things to note:

-The difficulty seems SLIGHTLY increased for Survival. They actually hit you more instead of standing there. By the time you get to battles in multiples of 10 (10, 20, etc), Cervantes / Inferno seem to be at these difficulties:

10th Battle Cervantes: Stage 5 normal
20th Battle Inferno: Stage 1 Hard
30th Battle Cervantes: Stage 3 Hard

And so on. That's how I feel they fight, compared to the old DC one where they all seem pretty lame until you get to the 35th Battle.

-Controls seem fine with the 360 controller. Pretty much the same experience as playing the Xbox SC2 on 360. Nothing spectular and sometimes a little off. Summon Suffering with Ivy isn't too difficult to pull off, but personally I prefer the PS2/PS3 controller.

-Tried out the Hori Fighting Stick

Why is Deckard Cain such a Badass??? (and some Diablo III)

By cgarb84 07-03-2008 12:27 PM

Anyone who has ever played even a little bit of Diablo over the years should no doubt know who this badass is..... Deckard Cain. The man who carries a big stick and isn't afraid to shove it between your buns when you ain't saving the world!!! Yesterday my brother sent me links to 2 youtube vids of ol' Deckard being a badass so I thought I would share these links. For those of you who have seen these vids you understand why they are so awesome.

Changing the subject here are my thoughts on Diablo III so far. The art style, which has many a Diablo fan up in arms, doesn't bother me at all. I just don't get why it's such a big deal. Blizzard made it this way because its what they do, and it should run better on a broader range of pc's looking like this. The

An addiction to Points

By Xiasis 07-03-2008 12:20 PM
For a long time now I have struggled to find a game that I truly enjoy playing. Instead I buy and borrow games from work just for the sake of maybe weaseling out another couple hundred gamer score points. I even find myself playing all the way through crappy and repetitive games I hated like King Kong for no reason other than I felt like I HAD to get every point I could. I know Im not the only one fighting for every nerd point I can, and I know im by no means as addicted to it as some people but this topic got me wondering about something else. I realized that not only do I play games I would otherwise have no interest in for nerd points but I also BUY games for no more reason than I feel as a "real" gamer I SHOULD own them. I have many rare PSX, SNES, and beyond games, particularly RPGs for no more reason than I felt I NEEDED to own them, even though most of them I have never opened and probably will never put into a system. I will even go as far as to avoid a game for another...

Kayden was a douche for creating the new OTT 3 posts early, but not really (A douche that is. Nuthin but love, baby). It was then revealed that Kayden's dad had a heart attack, but being the cool dude that he is, Kayden cared not. This let everyone else off the hook from offering sympathy. Kayden also has a bigger TV now, bitches.

WSB showed up and cracked wise. TaurusKatt pictures were viewed.

Wow is bombarded by more requests for interviews, to which he replied, "Bitches, I'm on tha muthaa." Not in those words, exactly. What he said was way less cool. He's gonna do 2 a week, he says. What do you say? Also, the OTT Sack must be added.

Wednesdays and Thursdays I go to drivers ed during the summer to well, learn to drive. Today was special though. Since most people have vacations and such, they have to make up days missed.
Me being a big guy in a little car makes it all uncomfortable but when you have 3 people in the back of a small economy car, I get wedged up next to this pretty thing things feel pretty good

Not to mention the person driving almost killed us. :/ (they got the accelerator and the brake mix up numerous times.)

Console Gaming Vs. PC Gaming - A converts thoughts

By Kuroi Kaze 07-03-2008 12:08 PM
The year was 1993 when my grandma plopped down the the $2,000 for an Acer Acros 486sx/25 with a 15 inch CRT monitor and a Panasonic dot matrix printer.

It wasn't long before I discovered gaming and paid $98 for an SB16 sound card (yeah it had no sound capabilities without it). That was good but Wolfenstein 3-D, Duke Nukem, and other disc-based games just weren't cutting it. The next upgrade came in the form of a $250 CD-ROM drive. This was cool because the drive came with a bunch of games like The 7th Guest and Star Wars: Rebel Assault. I spent hundreds of hours playing Doom, Curse of the Catacombs, Shadow Warrior, Warcraft, Commander Keen, and Budokan: The Martial Spirit. I was a hardcore PC gamer. I didn't even own a SNES and had to borrow a friend's to play FF4 and Chrono Trigger which went on to be my favorite games ever.

This trend continued until the original Playstation came out which I acquired for FF7 which was disappointing. The lure of fighting...

Craigslist Score! Sega!

NO! I don’t have a system to play these, but figured for $18 can’t go wrong and I’m looking for a system anyways, I guess the guy threw in the H-Town “Knockin da boots” single tape to make up for the fact that there is no system to actually play the games. The initial listing on craigslist did include these games and the sega master system, for $25! Couldn’t pass that up since I’ve been looking for one for a while now.

All the games include the original case, manuals and are in pretty damn good condition, except the 3 on the side. I saw the listing and what attracted me to it was the fact that it had the system but when I got there the douche bag said he doesn’t know where it was, even though I emailed him 16 hours before confirming it included the system. I drove about 40 minutes to pick the shit up and couldn’t leave empty handed, so haggled...

Shawn Elliott and friends made a spectacular episode about doing "market research" on games they invented. Interviewing people about "Tender Rondo" and such made for an amazing show.

This week's falls short, but I high suggest downloading last weeks.

I know "Games for Windows" probably alienates a lot of us console gamers but they talk about console stuff all the time. So I suggest giving it a shot.

There and Back Again - Metal Gear Solid Series

By Bretts31344 07-03-2008 11:35 AM
I finished playing Metal Gear Solid 4 within days of its release. It definitely is one of the best games I have ever played, so I recommend it to anyone who likes action/stealth games or any of the other Metal Gear Solid games. Now that the story is (mostly) wrapped up, I have decided to go back and replay the first three games. I think it will be fun making the connections I know about now, while still enjoying the story and game play. I just hope I can get past the differences in controls that are set in the previous games. Anyone else replay the games before/after they completed MGS4? Now I just need to dust off my Gamecube and hook it up to start MGS: Twin Snakes. I have Metal Solid 2: Sons of Liberty and Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater, but I think it might be worth buying the Metal Gear Solid Collection to play MGS2: Substance and MGS3: Subsistence.

Downloadable Games vs Physical Discs

By krazy14kraz 07-03-2008 11:32 AM
Let's take a look at the pros and cons.

Downloadable Games

PROS:

1) Always have it on your hard drive, meaning it is impossible to lose the game on the street or something. Unless you forget your 360 or PS3 at a restaurant????
2) Never have to worry about the game getting scratched or broken.
3) Never have to get up and put the disc in.

CONS:

1) Can't lend it to family/friends.
2) If your hard drive breaks, you lose the game.
3) You can't trade in the game for some dinero.
4) Can only use it on one Xbox. (Not sure about the PS3)
5) DRM

Physical Discs

PROS:

1) You have the actual copy and can treat it the way you want to or do what you want with it.... Like SEX.
2) Can use it on as many consoles as you want.
3) Can lend it to family/friends.
