#1 - Games in 2010 that I will "KILL" for!

By parasyteFMA 12-02-2009 03:04 PM
Assassin's Creed 2 was the last game coming out in 2009 that I was looking to buy. Now that I have it I feel that the rest of the year doesn't have a bit in store for me, and this is why I am looking about 1 month into the future for the start of the 2010 "game-buying" season.

1/12/2010 - Army of Two: The 40th Day

I enjoyed Army of Two a good bit. Although I consider it mediocre at best it was still an enjoyable 2 player experience I haven't experienced since the N64 days while playing Super Smash Bros. with my brother and a bunch of friends. I am looking forward to teaming up with my cousin Connor to pump terrorists full of lead in this next installment.

1/26/2010 - Mass Effect 2

I will be one to say that I hated the first Mass Effect. I like BioWare but they really...

Thanksgiving, with Tekken 6

By kainzero 12-02-2009 01:29 PM

She's giving head.

With my brother getting married this past Saturday, a ton of family came in with none of them being as ultra competitive at games as me, so I had to hide it and make sure no one noticed. =) But with new T6 netcode, how could I stop myself.

As we were finishing up reliving the memories of the wedding dance, my uncle taught me the base Capoiera form and I really wanted to play Tekken after that. So I went back and loaded up the game and started playing a couple games when all my cousins raided the room and wanted to play with me.

We spent at least an hour watching my 8 year old cousin Maia play Christie, with a 150% handicap, fighting against Bob and doing numerous belly pushes.

Nothing about frame advantages, nothing about learning complicated juggles or dedicating extraordinary amounts of time learning how to low parry. Just playing around and cracking

Why hello there, Microsoft Customer Support

By Treehouse Gamer 12-02-2009 03:55 AM
Greetings, CAGs!

While many of you will find this "tl;dr", you can skip to the last paragraph to assist me. Otherwise, I hope you enjoy!

Since buying a new plasma screen via Best Buy's Black Friday deal, I've been contemplating switching out the component cables to an HDMI cable. The bad news is that, since I have an older/cheaper receiver, I need to run the HDMI cable as video only and optical separately into my receiver. I figure it shouldn't be so bad since I do the same thing with my cable box and PS3. That's where Microsoft says, "Oh no you don't."

I am aware of the audio adapter dongle for the XBox360, but I assumed that I could just use my pre-existing component cable adapter's optical out while simultaneously feeding the HDMI gobble gobble port. I did not realize that the adapter was built with fat people in mind and won't let me slip in the HDMI cable into the XB360's cooter.

So, what's a CAG to do? I...

similarity of games influencing your purchasing decisions

By serenitygod 12-02-2009 03:11 AM
Just wanted to drop a blog entry on games that are so close to other games that they may affect your consumer purchasing decisions.

I.E. two big ones are say God of War and Dante's inferno they both have over the top action similar combat, similar art style, involve mythology of sorts etc.

Another close call is Quantum Theory this is easily comparible to Gears 2. Chest high walls (go Yahtzee!), dim graphics, large bosses even similar run styles.

Not having played Ninja Blade I am not going to press the issue but, I have seen a lot of parallels and comparisons to Gaiden.

How much do you think this affects your buying decisions? Also would it make you more likely to buy a similar game or avoid it due to expected dissapointment?

Sometimes I just really get in the mood to play a game. I don't just mean any game, but I mean the game. You just lost it.

What I really mean is, that one game that, no matter how long you played it, you always felt that you needed to go back for more. Sometimes something totally innocuous would remind you of the game, or sometimes, you would be reminded of it without even being able to pinpoint the reason.

Unfortunately for me, that game isn't something I can easily play anymore due to it being an older title with no backward compatibility and also a lack of infrastructure.

This is the game that, if I could choose only one game for all time, I would ask that they add it to Xbox LIVE and the Playstation Network.

Why won't they bring this game back? Really! It's driving me crazy! It seems like a slam dunk!
I'm going crazy for it!

Literally minutes ago, I found myself thinking of it and had to go online looking for screenshots,...

Best and Worst of the GGT Part 4: Raptor Jesus Saves the GGT (GGT #29-30)

By Krymner 12-01-2009 11:17 PM
I've been away from CAG for a few months, but I do miss talking about games with the guys and galls of the "General Gaming Thread". We cool kids just call it the GGT. As the unoffical self-appointed historian of the GGT, I shall now continue my "Best and Worst" series about previous GGT threads.

Heading into GGT #29, it was early Feburary 2008. The big games everyone was looking forward to were titles like Lost Odyssey, Super Smash Bros Brawl, Crisis Core, and Ninja Gaiden DS. Many GGT'ers made some predictions and statements during this time about upcoming and recently released games. Amung those heralding recent releases were The Crotch and Apossum.

The 5 Game Genres you Just Can't Like

By the_grimace 12-01-2009 08:27 PM
No matter how good the reviews, how much acclaim, or how great everyone tells you it is... there are just those certain genres of games that we can't get into. For some people its shooters, others RPGs. Here's my list of the 5 game genres I just can't like!

---------------------------

Number 5 - Puzzle Games

It's not that I hate having to solve puzzles, or that I'm a weak thinker, but often times I find myself disliking puzzle games because the puzzles can often be so convoluted and poorly executed. There's nothing worse then trying to solve a puzzle, when often times, you are really given no beginning step to start off on.

These slide puzzles are the WORST!

I guess its a lot to do that with I'm a logical thinker. I try to do things that make sense, but often times puzzles in games don't make sense. Lot's of...

Oh my, there's a fire...

By The Mana Knight 12-01-2009 07:24 PM
Yes, there seems to be a fire at my apartment right now. I'm typing this as the fire alarm is going off. I was just starting to eat my dinner and I heard some loud alarm noise. Well, there are four apartments on my floor, and it appears the one diagonally from me just had its oven catch on fire. The fire alarm is going off loudly. My neighbor rushed to another neighbor of mine to use the phone to call the fire department. Just as all of this happened, my UPS package arrived which I'll discuss in another blog shortly. A few minutes later, fireman arrive rushing up the stairs with a hose and stuff (I live on the top floor). I could hear some screaming and trying to put out the fire. Thankfully, the fire doesn't seem to be all that serious, just in a small area inside an apartment. I can definitely smell smoke inside my apartment right now.

Just as I'm finishing this, the fire alarm finally went off and it seems like things were taken care of. Regardless, this was...

Verizon Customer Service Sucks ASS

By dubbfoolio 12-01-2009 03:32 PM
Need to vent my recent customer service debacle with Verizon.

Two different customer service reps told me my bill will be prorated to the day that I cancelled when I switched carriers. That even though I was only using the phone for a couple days I wouldn't need to pay the entire month of service. Of course this was a lie. You only ever get the correct information after verizon charges you more than they said they would.

Last year I was cutting it close on minutes around the holiday season and I asked to upgrade my plan to be effective immediately. They upgraded it for the next month and I ended up with over $100 of overages because I was told I had hundreds of minutes to spare. I had to argue for hours with customer service reps to get this removed even though it was obviously a mistake in how the rep setup my account. They even admitted it was obviously a mistake how she set it up, but were still unwilling to remove the charges.

Everyone seems...

My Week In Review (A Day Late!)

By 1NintendoFan 12-01-2009 12:45 PM
I knew the time had to come, but it was one of those things where I never expected it to happen when it did. Unfortunately, it happened for me last week. For the first time since starting CAG in June or July I don't have a single pickup for the week. Since starting CAG I have bought, at least, one game every week, but on the week of Black Friday I didn't have a single purchase, not even a bad one! I've been looking forward to last week for months, knowing that the deals were going be great and so many things I would probably want. Now, the week has come and gone and I didn't make a single purchase.

I don't know if my expectations were too high for Black Friday this year, if there just wasn't that much offered I wanted, or if I really didn't need anything to begin with, but this was the first Black Friday in several years where I didn't make a single purchase. I think it really was a combination of not really needing/wanting anything that was on sale this year and not wanting...

Top Ten Desired Games of 2010

By SuperPhillip 12-01-2009 05:14 AM
Vote on my December poll!

2009. Pfft. That is soooo 2009. Sure, there may have been a fantastic amount of games available to us this year, but that's not good enough. We're gamers. We're always wanting more. There's never enough gaming to be had! No sarcasm or hint of irony meant. Before we start the SPC Best of 2009 awards, I wanted to take a look ahead at the games I'm looking forward to playing most in 2010. Now if you've been following SPC for awhile, you'll pretty much know my tastes. Colorful platformers, action games, mascot racers, certain FPS games, et cetera. Does your list contain any of my most wanted?

10) Gran Turismo 5 (PS3)

I absolutely loved Gran Turismo 4. It was my first game in the series and in the driving simulation genre. Driving down a straightaway, wind dancing against your ride, or drifting through a hairpin turn, it was beautiful. Gran Turismo 5 seems to be bigger and better than previous installments with custom soundtracks, online gameplay, and even car damage. Perhaps that will make me drive with more caution. Wouldn't want to see my Mustang with ouchies on it!

9) Tatsunoko VS Capcom: Ultimate All-Stars (Wii)

As you can tell from my What is UP with that article, or at least the portion of it on fighting games, I'm not too keen on the fighting genre. However, I can't pass up on playing as Frank West of Dead Rising fame or Zero from the Mega Man X series. The coup de grace is the addition of online play for fighters all around the world to put up or shut up. Sure, I'll get creamed like clam chowder, but at least I'll have fun doing it. Though to be absolutely positively truthful, I would have more fun winning.

8) Pokemon Heart Gold/Soul Silver (DS)

This one is a big'gun as some would say. I've never met anyone who would say such a thing who wasn't in character, but I'm getting off topic. Regardless, I never got to enjoy the Pokemon Gold/Silver/Crystal era of games. I blame it on my lack of a Game Boy Color. Some say it's the best generation. I say, "bring it on!" because I've got to catch 'em all. I look forward to visiting the region of Johto for the very first time, duking it out online with fellow trainers, and of course, catching them all.

7) Metroid: Other M (Wii)

We don't know much about Metroid: Other M besides that it's a stupid title. It also appears to be half 2-D with 3-D effects thrown in for good measure. That's really why it's so low on this list-- we know next to nothing on it. Regardless, Team Ninja of Ninja Gaiden fame and Nintendo have teamed up to create what is looking to be one unforgettable adventure with all of the backtracking, charge beam-blasting action any fan of Samus could hope for.

6) Sin and Punishment 2 (Wii)

I picked up the original Sin and Punishment on the Virtual Console, and I really enjoyed it. Sure, the controls were cumbersome and the voice work was grating, but it was a great game. I was very pleased to catch wind of a sequel. I was even more pleased to read that you'd be using the pointer to shoot. Now all I wait for is a Star Fox sequel using the same control set-up, and my life will be nearly complete. Okay, dramatics aside, Sin and Punishment 2 looks to be one sure-fire way to have a blast. Did you notice the two puns in that last sentence? I'm so clever.

5) Monster Hunter 3 (Wii)

Monster Hunter is big in Japan. No, huge. No, behemoth-sized. Even as console versions aren't as popular, MH3 has sold nearly a million copies in the land of the rising sun alone. It's coming soon to North America with Wii speak functionality and online play, whether it's free or not we'll have to wait and see. The game is the first real blockbuster third party effort (sad, isn't it?), and it definitely shows. The monster slashing, monster hunting action you've known to love is back and better than ever before in Monster Hunter 3.

4) Sonic and SEGA All-Stars Racing (Various)

While Gran Turismo 5 is pure simulation, Sonic and SEGA All-Star Racing (flows off the tongue, does it not?) is all arcade action. Modeled after Mario Kart, All-Star Racing takes multiple characters from the SEGA universe, Sonic, Tails, Eggman, Ulala, Samba, Aiai, Billy Hatchet, Ryo from Shenmue, and puts them on tracks from various SEGA franchises. Promising an equal experience no matter the platform, this title should be on any SEGA fan's wish list.

3) God of War III (PS3)

The God of War franchise is an action-adventure series of visceral proportions. As shown in the trailer, you can take someone's head and twist it right off. And I thought the original Playstation 2 game was violent beyond words. The game itself looks like a painting as David Jaffe once eloquently put it. I have to agree with him. It's a gorgeous-looking game, and I imagine it will have the same longevity and fun factor of past God of Wars. I can only ponder the epic battles with towering monstrosities and beasts!

2) ModNation Racers (PS3)

This is the third and final racer on my list. What do you get when you cross Mario Kart with LittleBigPlanet? You get this game on my list, one of my most anticipated of 2010. I missed out on the beta for ModNation Racers, but I think my soul is strong enough to wait. You can create your own custom tracks filled with obstacles, twists, and turns, items, and shortcuts, share them with others, or just race them until you've achieved track-creating perfection. I loved LittleBigPlanet, so no doubt I'll love this spiritual successor.

1) Super Mario Galaxy 2 (Wii)

What can I say about Super Mario Galaxy? It's most definitely my game of the generation. The game kept throwing at you new challenges and obstacles that you were always amazed from start to finish. It must be a sign of the apocalypse because we're getting a second 3-D Mario in the same generation. If you call this a rehash, the sequel to the game of the generation, please e-mail me your address so I can charter a plane, fly to where you live, and punch you in the face. Women included. Can't be sexist here and leave them out.

Great Games: 2009 Edition

By KingBroly 12-01-2009 05:03 AM
Since 2009 is winding down, it's time for those oh so meaningless Awards that everyone must hand out to feel vindicated about what games they purchased over the previous year. And I am no different. So unlike last year's countdown to #1, this year I thought I'd list what categories each game falls into on my list. Each category has 3-4 games, and after each list I'll give a description of what I mean for each category. So let's go racing!

The Contenders
- Uncharted 2: Among Thieves
- Batman: Arkham Asylum
- Street Fighter IV
- Wii Sports Resort

Pretty simple. My GOTY contenders. Each game is extremely well made, and either has (in my eyes) no flaws or very little flaws. I also enjoyed these games quite a bit.

The Oh So Close's
- Punch-Out!!!
- Killzone 2
- Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2
- Infamous

While I enjoyed these games quite a bit, they are not anywhere near the polish...
