So, I watched a man burn to death today

It's been nearly a day, though I haven't slept nor have I left campus yet -- it's pretty much all I've been able to think about since it happened. Not too sure how to describe it. I actually cried when explaining it to my roommate... I haven't cried in a very long time, at least two years or so. All because I was near a stranger as he committed suicide. A complete stranger. While happening, it was incredibly surreal. Something a little strange: a guy pouring some liquid on the ground. Then shortly afterward, ~10 foot flames, a person at the base of those flames... engulfed for about two full minutes... about two dozen people getting as close as they could, getting burned themselves in their attempt to help, taking off coats/shirts/pants/everything just to have something to smother the flames... a man continuing to burn.. continuing to die... skin turning brown, then a dark muddy green... dying...... |

Tears, Bullets and Blood: Far Cry 2 Reviewed
By DesertEagleXIX 10-31-2008 02:20 AM

An anonymous, digitally scrambled voice gave me my objective. On my GPS unit, I saw the target was just over the next hill, so I hopped into the tactical and crept over the ridge. As the truck passed the crest, I saw the shanty-town and immediately spotted a lone guard on the perimeter, armed with a RPG. I moved up to the .50 cal as the guard readied his weapon, noticing my presence. After a three second burst, the smoke cleared, and the sentry laid lifeless on the rooftop. The decaying shanties started buzzing with activity, like an agitated beehive. A few opponents took pot-shots that came close to my position, so I exited the turret, and prepared to flank the combatants.
![]() Suddenly, the roar of a vehicle engine approached, the tell-tale beam of headlights coming around the corner. I retreated, grabbing the RPG of the downed guard, running for cover with the vehicle behind me in close pursuit. I aimed the RPG... |

Yes, I'm still alive. |
|
Wow, can't believe I've let a whole month go by without an update. Though I guess I have a decent excuse this time, as I've been busy adjusting to my new/first job. Landing a job right as the storm of new games comes is both great and bad, as what time I haven't spent sleeping or working is spent either playing said games or playing World of Warcraft. Guess actually typing for a few minutes and organizing my thoughts where kind of the last thing on my mind.
Mercenaries 2 is a wreck and a half. I gave up after 15 minutes trying to deploy the 3rd and final smoke to drop some kind of sound detector which kept giving me an error. To make matters worse, even though you can smash and destroy stuff quite easily, there seems to be an invulnerable bunker with unlimited respawns of guys with rockets. Rock Band 2 is freaking awesome! I love the new method of selecting music and am having a blast with World Tour mode. The daily challenge feature is great as well. It's... |

Hooray for Hard Drives!
By shipwreck 10-30-2008 07:07 PM
|
|
As some of you may have heard on the CAGcast, the hard drive in my MacBook decided it had seen enough last weekend and has now journeyed on to Hard Drive Heaven (also known as a trash can in the back room of the Apple store). After a few trips back and forth, I'm up and running again, but I still need to reinstall Leopard and restore whenever my last backup was. One thing's for certain, it won't include the last two weeks of previews that were written. Thank goodness nothing of importance nor great quantities of games were released!
Oh, and speaking of things you may have heard on the CAGcast, Wombat threw down a gauntlet and got on my case for not blogging or posting enough reviews. Well, consider this me picking up the gauntlet, or throwing it back at him, or wishing it had just stayed true to its overhead 2D roots and not tried to adapt to an overly-competitive third-person action game market... or whatever it is you do with a gauntlet. More posts to follow... |

Strange coincidence or self commentary?
By Treehouse Gamer 10-30-2008 05:51 PM

So, I finally sat down to play Fallout 3 last night, and I decided I wanted to start the game as an evil female character. This is somewhat different than what I normally do - which is make an evil male character modelled after myself.
As a model, I used my wife to make my character with somewhat high speech skills. As it turns out I made my wife into an evil manupilative bitch. Is this just a matter of being the wrong character at the wrong time, or am I telling myself something about my wife? Oh well. ::Goes off to blow up MegaTon:: |

Why I may never buy a new game again. |
|
Lately all my game purchases have been in the form of Used games from GameStop several days after the launch date. Instead of shelling out $59.99 for a brand new game I get a copy, sometimes the next day for under $39 ($54.99 - 30%). Games that have been traded in a day or so after launch are usually in pristine condition. Saving $20 feels pretty good and I can afford to get more games. So, has anyone else given up buying sealed games near launch day? |

Decisions, Decisions, and Decisions - and I don't mean the election!
By oscargrouch 10-30-2008 02:32 PM

Well its that time of year once again. The holiday gaming glut is encroaching quite rapidly. In other years I would be able to willy-nilly pick up anything that came out that I would like, unfortunately this year my buying power (as I suspect for a great number of other CAGs) is much more restricted. Additionally, I am really trying to keep to my backlog crushing plans.
So this will necessitate making some tough choices this year. I think I am leaning on doing the following: Eternal Poison - Pre Order (Atlus Game) - I wish I could not pre order and pick it up later but you know most Atlus titles Persona 4 - Pre Order (Atlus Game) - No brainer Resistance 2 - Wait for a big price drop Dead Space - Wait for a big price drop Fable 2 - may pass all together Fallout 3 - I want it but I want to finish other RPGs - Hope for a deal on Black Friday Gears of War 2 - Tempted to get it... |

My rant about the DMV
By bebop 10-30-2008 02:19 PM
|
|
Just got back from the DMV to renew my license. When you go to the DMV you should be prepared for terrible waits and what not. But I did not expect it to be a mini repressive toltarian regime. First of all you are not allowed to have(use) any electronic equipment within the building. I had brought my mp3 player to pass the time, but for some reason that is not allowed. Every 5 minutes one of the DMV employees would shout out for some to turn off there cell phone.
So I waited patiently for my number to be called until I spotted a sign saying, "only cash and checks allowed" or some such bullshit. That right, no debit or credit here. Not even an ATM. I happen to only have a 20 dollar bill in wallet. I remember its 25 dollars to renew my license, so I dash out to my car to raid my ashtray which happens to be filled with a lot of change, thankfully I was able to scrounge up 5 dollars in quarters. While I scrounge for change I miss my number. Can the DMV go back a number?... |

Dude I just won a PS3 |
|
First off.. Thanks Goozex
Talk about unexpected. Unfortunately Im in Canada for a while so I won't be able to play until I get this thing in my head removed. I only brought 4 Wii games and literal handful of DS games with me. PS3... PS3... My main issue with the PS3 was the entry cost. I think it costs way more than a console should cost. That said now that I won one, I guess I don't really have any objections to it. Not too excited about the exclusives but the multi-plat stuff always looked interesting and free online is the way online should be. I've always been interested in these... I think they're called "demos"? It's difficult to remember what Nintendo doesn't tell me. So yippee ki ay. I'll see ya'll on the PSN. |

More Games to Sell Still...
By Tengaport 10-30-2008 11:40 AM
|
![]() I got a little sidetracked in my 'use it or lose it quest', but I'm working to get back on track (despite the Little Big Planet interruptions). For those of you who are new to my blog, I've been slowly trying to transition myself away from hanging on to games indefinitely. Instead, once a game is sitting idle it is destined to head out the door via CAG, Goozex or eBay. Today up for sale are three Xbox 360 games. All are complete and in excellent condition. The games are:
Next up is the afterburner-fitted GBA that a bunch of you have PM'ed me about. Sorry it's taken so long, but stay tuned... |

Fallout 3 is ruining my life!

I am addicted to this game and loving it!
![]() Its been a while since I really loved a game like this. Everything about it just intrigues me to keep playing. You know your playing a great game when a few hours pass like it was only a few minutes. Its 3am as of now and I would be playing more Fallout 3 if Vista didnt just do some stupid auto-update and turn my game off and restart my computer. I really hate vista, I need to switch back over to XP asap. Anyways, maybe it was a blessing in disguise because I still havent dont my homework thats dew tomorrow and im thinking about just skipping the class. This game is sooo good its bad. Be warned before playing because you wont want to stop! ![]() |

More game swapping
By vlv723 10-30-2008 01:37 AM

Fable II is going to be awhile before moving forward with other games.
I still haven't opened Dead Space, NBA 2K9, and Saints Row 2. I'll probably keep Dead Space and the other two, if I'm lucky, swap it out at Toys R Us for Fallout 3 and LittleBigPlanet. Now, where is that receipt? I'll start looking for it when I wake up. Sidenote: To save more money, I'll probably find someone to take over my cell phone contract: Apple iPhone 3G 8GB. Any takers? |

Unopened games |
|
Over at joystiq.com they had a entry that 11% of gamers have games that are still in shrinkwrap. As a lifelong gamer, I understand that this is the biggest sin that gamer can commit. And since I'm not perfect, I have a couple of unopened games sitting on my shelf.
1. Splinter Cell: Chaos Therory - PS2 I ventured to a Best Buy on a Black Friday (day after Thanksgiving) to pick up a SD memory card for my sister long ago. SC:CT was not a greatest hit yet, but BB was selling it for $9. I wanted it, but I couldn't find it at the PS2 or Xbox area. I waited in a line that weaved through the entire store for 90 minutes. As I got close to the registers, I saw a copy of SC:CT sitting on a shelf I picked it up and promised to play it that long weekend. I didn't and now it sits on my shelf waiting for me. 2. Max Payne 2 - PS2 This was a Cheapassgamer deal: $2 & something cents and $2 shipping. I always brag about buying a game for less than $5, but... |

I know it's only a few bucks, but it's the principal. Source (Waiting for TMK rebuttal Edit: Thanks to FriskyTanuki for clearing things up a bit. Still a shame that you must subscribe to get in on that Home beta,... |

But wait - there's more! My Fallout 3 purchase at CC |
![]() Being a CAG, I'm not the biggest Circuit City fan there is. That being said, the big red of big box stores impressed me today when I went to snag my Fallout 3 players' guide. I had already pre-ordered the game online from CC and received my $10 gift card about a month ago, which I had saved for a future use. When I learned that the guide for the game was only $15, I decided to use my gift card and use in-store pick up so I could prep myself for the game, which FedEx told me I would receive next week. Being the impatient gamer that I am, I was tempted to simply buy the game while picking up my guide today and exchanging my game-en-route once I received it - an option many on this site have done before. Upon picking my game up from the nice, attractive woman in customer service, I was informed that I could save an additional 10 percent on any item today... |
