Innovations in Co-Op Gaming

By bapenguin 05-04-2009 03:31 PM

With the growing popularity of co-op gaming, Co-Optimus decided to take the time to look at the things that have helped propel this genre, or gametype, to new levels. They examine their top 10 innovations in cooperative gaming and look at some of the games that best display those characteristics.

Quote:
#6: Technological Innovations
With the advent of wireless controllers, four player couch co-op is no longer a lesson in remember your boyscout training in untying knots that make no logical sense in how they got there. There's more room to spread out and less of a chance of being hit by someone when you accidentally pull a Leeeeroy Jenkings moment.

Rata-ta-ta-ta is the sound a keyboard makes, and it's one you'll no longer be distracted with thanks to voice technology. No online co-op session is complete without a headset, so connect to someone in a more personal way with

Ghostbusters Co-Op Interviews

By bapenguin 04-09-2009 10:54 AM

Co-Optimus had a chance to interview the developers of the upcoming Ghostbusters games. There are actually two sets of interviews. The first is with developer Red Fly, who is making the Wii version of the game.
Quote:
Co-Optimus: I need to know...can I hold a ghost while my buddy "sets the trap" in split screen co-op?

Dustin: Two players will be able to work cooperatively together in a variety of ways throughout our game. Certainly one player can wrangle and slam a ghost around while the other player sets a trap. Or they can wrangle the same ghost together wearing it down quicker while another Buster readies a trap. Solving puzzles, discovering collectables, and taking out bosses will all be great challenges that will be very enjoyable when sharing with a friend.

Resident Evil 5 Co-Op Review

By bapenguin 03-18-2009 10:23 AM

It's time to separate the men from the boys, the woman from the girls. It's time to team up and head into Resident Evil 5 - the fully cooperative survival horror action game on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.

Quote:
Making your way through the game with a friend truly is a rewarding experience. I never felt like the co-op was forced upon me, the co-op actions we performed flowed naturally into the game world. Sure a broken ladder here or there might have seemed almost too convenient for a assisted jump, but there's something really satisfying about donkey punching an infected off your partner. I was really impressed with how the boss battles managed to lend them self well to cooperative strategies. For instance one battle had a player leading the boss into a furnace while the other player hit the switch to ignite the flames and (hopefully) not your partner.

Sacred 2 Console Interview

By bapenguin 02-05-2009 11:57 AM

Late last year the Co-Optimus crew dug deep into Sacred 2: Fallen Angel for the PC. It was an indepth Action/RPG from European developer Ascaron. Now several months later both the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 are getting their own versions of the game, nearly identical to the PC counterpart.

In the latest interview, Co-Optimus talked with Mario Kroll, Director of Marketing and PR from cdv Software Entertainment USA, about the console ports and how the game's four player co-op mode will work in our living room.

Quote:
Co-Optimus: In the local co-op mode, can a player bring their single player character into the co-op game? If so, will the experience and items earned in co-op transfer back?

Mario: That’s actually one of the differences between Sacred 2: Fallen Angel and most other games that also offer a multiplayer experience. There is no differentiation

Crossing 4 Dead

By bapenguin 02-03-2009 10:43 AM

It's a tale of zombies. It's a tale of furry animals. It's a tale of being alone - and a tale of working together. This is Crossing4Dead and it's the most twisted and delightful co-op story you'll ever read.

Quote:
Two weeks after first infection.
I have fled the city, and all surrounding areas with a group of friends, but we were separated by a herd of Tanks chasing us every which way. Being alone in the infected world with no ammo was terrifying, so I ran. I spent days searching for food, and water, before I stumbled upon a very secure, remote town. The hand painted sign says “Sparta”. My name is Regn, and this is where I wait out the apocalypse.

The Co-Op Beat Em Up Retrospective

By bapenguin 01-20-2009 09:44 AM

Harken back to my golden age of gaming, a time when the Sega Genesis and SuperNES were head to head in the console wars. There was a game genre that sparked my love of co-op, one that seems to have all but disappeared. From Altered Beast to Golden Axe, Streets of Rage to Double Dragon - the co-op beat em up games were the cream of the crop in co-op experiences. The concept of these games was simple - partner up with a friend and punch, kick and attack everything in your path. They were challenging, fun, and over the top; but once 3D games became popular they all but disappeared.

Lord of the Rings Conquest Community Event Coverage

By bapenguin 10-27-2008 11:49 AM

Last week, Co-Optimus and several other representatives from community sites were invited out to Pandemic Studios in Los Angeles to attend a Community event for Lord of the Rings: Conquest.

Quote:
For those not in the know, Lord of the Rings: Conquest is a spiritual continuation of the Star Wars: Battlefront series, but with the “epic” setting cranked up as high as Pandemic could muster. Almost all of the major battles from the books and film are included, and the developers were given artistic license to expand on some of the events that happen off-screen or were only mentioned in passing in the books.

The write up covers details about the game's campaigns, classes and of course drop-in/drop-out cooperative gameplay.

10 Things you May or May Not Know About Fable 2

By bapenguin 10-20-2008 11:49 AM

We've just posted a list of 10 things you may or may not know about Fable 2 based on a solid 10 hours with the title this weekend.

Quote:
Fable 2 has a serious problem on its hand. There is no way to talk about everything you can do in this game in a meaningful way without leaving the article's length something just shy of a novella. Even after putting somewhere in the neighborhood of 10-12 hours of game time, I feel like I haven't even scratched the surface.
Read on for my full impressions of the game.
Lets try to explain this in terms of a gaming equation.

Fable 1 + Oblivion Quest Design + Sims Style Character Relations + PETZ style AI Pet + Casino Mini Games + Job Mini Games + Actual Town Economy Mini Game + EVE Online Style Income = Fable 2

New Xbox Experience Requires Storage - Free Memory Card or Cheap Hard Drive Available

By bapenguin 10-14-2008 07:55 AM

In case you haven't heard, Microsoft's monster of a dashboard update will require some form of storage. At least 128MB free to be exact. This leaves certain system owners (Core/Arcade) out in the cold when trying to manage their memory.

Microsoft's solution? A free 512MB Memory Card for "Qualified" System Owners - or better yet - a $20, 20 Gigabyte hard drive.

More details can be found right here.

Co-Op Couples: Tempted by the Loot of Another

By bapenguin 10-04-2008 05:24 PM
We have a regular feature over at Co-Optimus called Co-Op Couples. The editorial explores gaming with your significant other and attempts to offer suggestions on what you can play together, or perhaps ways to play together.

This week's column has an interesting spin to it.

We've all been there. You co-op halfway through a game with one person, only to finish the second half with another. Usually it's no big deal, sure you feel guilty but they'll get over it. But what if the co-oper you cheated on lives with you? Worse yet what if they are your significant other?
We've all been tempted by the loot of another.

Head on over to Co-Optimus to read about one man's journey into Mordor...in more ways then one.
