Nintendo marketing 180

By thorbahn3 11-16-2008 01:33 AM
Nintendo's new commercial for Animal Crossing City Folk really shows how different Nintendo's core audience has changed in such a short time frame. The commercials are proof enough.

My first WiiWare disappointment

By thorbahn3 11-09-2008 09:10 PM
Last week a game was released on the Wii Shopping Channel that I really thought I'd enjoy. The first sequal to the franchise in many many years "Alien Crush Returns" looked like it'd be a great game. As someone who discovered the originals greatness on the Wii when released as a Turbo-Grafx 16 virtual console title at the Wii's launch period I had a great time. The retro vib of late 80's-early 90's alien designs married with a not-to-hard video pinball gameplay rocked. The sequal, which I also got on the Wii, Devil's Crush was even better, featuring an awesome soundtrack and bizarre satanic characters was even better.

But for some reason the Wiiware sequel didn't grab me. First of all, the three pinball table set ups are a bore. Each table seems rather bare bones when compared to it's predecessors. I would of rather had one table that featured all the unqiue design layouts, bumpers, ramps, etc instead of three sparse boards. Secondly, it takes forever to gain...

Took me forever to vote.

By thorbahn3 11-04-2008 05:05 PM
I left for the community center where I vote every year at around 2:50 p.m.
I went in, showed my I.D., signed my name, and voted. It took me a whole five minutes!
Man, I should of filled out one of those absentee ballots if I knew it'd take so long.

So a new website is up now called www.thorbahn.com . Like I figured, it's some distant relative of mine who runs some sort of company. Not sure what it is really, some kind of employee benefits thing. Anyways, I got a kick out of it so I thought you might too, but I doubt it since you're not me.

Age of Booty: The greatest game nobody's playing

By thorbahn3 10-18-2008 04:08 AM
Updated by thorbahn3 10-18-2008 04:34 PM
As usual, I downloaded all the XBLA trials this week. Unlike usual, I actually came across a pretty fun demo: Age of Booty. I saw a friend, DCriminal, playing and asked him if he was enjoying it and said he was having a lot fun. I bought it and haven't regretted it yet.

The premise behind it is your one pirate ship that sails across a hexagonal game board with various tree, sand and palm tree islands in your way. You navigate to the nearest town, blast your cannons at it, take damage and hopefully capture it. On the other side of the map is an opponent that is trying to do the same.

In order to win, you need to take advantage of the map by defeating merchant ships that release power ups, such as whirl pools and bombs that damage or relocate enemy ships. The most important thing though is your resources, trees, gold and gun powder. collect enough through plundering towns, native villagers, and finding the random floating crate. Gain enough and you...

Wii tools

By thorbahn3 10-11-2008 11:26 PM
After playing some Super Paper Mario, I checked out the Nintendo channel. Boy am I glad I did!
The one titled "Wii Music instruments one" features these people who looked like they walked off the set of an abercrombie and fitch commercial. These people show off how you pretend how to play the snare drum and other instruments with the biggest "I hate my job" look I've ever seen. Cuts to their Mii versions smiling happily sells it perfectly. Do yourself a favor and check it out.

Strong Bad's second cool review for attractive people

By thorbahn3 09-16-2008 06:46 AM
Updated by thorbahn3 09-16-2008 06:59 AM
That's right, I bought the second installment of the Strong Bad adventure series entitled Strong Badia the
Free
with the cheap ass Wii points cards I found at Wal Mart. After "cleaning out the fridge" and downloading it, I have to say it's just as good as the first episode, but not better. You start off in your house when all of the sudden the King of Town bitch slaps you into a collar that prevents you from leaving the house.

Afterwards, everyone forms their own country and it's up to Strong Bad to convince them to join the nation of Strong Badia so he can kick the King of Town's ass. The hard part is figuring out how get everyone to join you by using items you find, trade, and make. Luckily, the hints help you when you're lost. While playing, I came across some glitches like the screen would show another image for a split second, Strong Bad would skate across the floor and the screen frozen when I pushed a button before the crappy math fighter mini game...

Why isn't anime on Network TV?

By thorbahn3 09-10-2008 09:27 PM
This entire summer has been filled with prime time crap left and right. These replacement shows that are shown instead of reruns are mostly "reality" shows like America's got Talent, Wipeout, crap, crap and more crap. What I don't understand is why a TV network doesn't take a chance on an adult driven anime to boost summer viewing. After all, there's a lot of anime programming that mirrors a lot of popular shows like Heroes, Lost, Bones, etc.

All they'd need to do is purchase the rights to show the anime, make sure its around 25 episodes long (that would fill the 3-4 months of summer programing nicely), and take a gamble. Instead, Deal or no Deal will be shown for the thousandth time until it dies next to Who wants to be a millionare and The Weakest Link. I guess playing it safe is often the entertainment industry's motto.

What I've rented from Netflix

By thorbahn3 09-07-2008 06:43 AM
Like I've said before, I subscribe to Netflix. Ever since 06/09/06 I've gotten those famous red envelopes in the mail. What was in them? See for yourself in this list that goes from most recent to first rental. To see your own go to "your account" and click on "DVD Rental Activity." You'll soon figure out a lot about your rental habits. For example, I only rent shit that I doubt the local rental store would carry and I like animation a lot.

P.S. This is all from the $9.00 one disc at a time plan.

Castle Crashers crashes a lot

By thorbahn3 08-29-2008 02:17 AM
On Wednesday night I bought and then soon after played Castle Crashers with some fellow CAGs. The entire night there were no huge hick ups, maybe one person randomly drops out for no reason, but you could pick him back up after a fight. Tonight however was a huge you if you wanted to play this game for the main reason everyone bought it for: the online play with friends. Try, after try, after try, we would see a loading logo, the game dumps you back to the main menu, repeat with new host. This went on at an insane rate.

Even worse, after we got into the game, it would dump us onto the main menu after we scrolled through some doors which need to load. Because of this, CAG Joe now needs to recollect all his animal orbs and weapons because for some reason he can't access them anymore.

After getting frustrated, I went and watched some TV. When I came back I tried playing with a new set of friends but the same shit happened. There are two other games...

High school anime showdown

By thorbahn3 08-25-2008 01:01 PM
This morning I got Lucky Star in the mail from Netflix (well, second after the first disc had a huge crack) . After watching the first volume my brain is happy. So happy in fact that it might actually beat Azumanga Daioh as my favorite high school girl anime series. Sure that's the only other one I can think of, but they're both so ing funny. So which is better to you? If you haven't seen either or need a refresher, watch the title openings and choose by leaving a comment.

Funimation + Wii + Youtube = Awesome

By thorbahn3 08-20-2008 02:29 PM
So Funimation has decided to finally post their older and not very popular anime on their youtube channel.
While this isn't new other than the fact it's now legal to watch these shows on youtube, it's still great to see them do. Anyways, because of this, I can watch these shows on my Nintendo Wii via the internet channel.
Something about sitting in a comfortable chair and watching youtube on a big screen is much better.

The following shows are quite good and are on the funimation youtube channel: http://www.youtube.com/profile?user=FUNimation

Blue Gender:

Imagine a zombie movie turned into a into an anime tv series and replace the zombies with giant bugs who eat humans and have taken over the world. The main character was in deep freeze and is awken to this scary and ed up world. Also add mechs. Great anime series, own the entire DVD set.

Rumbling Hearts:
A boy and a girl in high school fall in love...

Thoughts on BC: Rearmed's ending (spoilers)

By thorbahn3 08-18-2008 11:47 PM
I've really got to had it to the crew who made the remake. It's a great game but the best and most challenging experience for me was the last stage. Going through it was both a chore and a pleasure. To start off I'd end up dieing in one of the first three rooms. I'd need to figure out how the swing should go, get blasted by an enemy or fall to my doom. After about 5 tries, I finally mastered those rooms. Then I get to the next stage figuring the leader would be behind the door only to find another room. By the way, when the lights go out in the electric room and the music cuts out at the same time: genius.

The room is an outdoor platform jumping challenge were I needed to figure out where and how to get from point a to point b to point c and beyond. This was even more ruff since you could make one mistake and die.

So after that I figured the leader had to be next, but no. Instead I'm treated to another stage where I need to shut down electric switches...

Strong Bad's cool review for attractive people

By thorbahn3 08-11-2008 08:44 PM
Updated by thorbahn3 08-11-2008 08:48 PM
Even though CheapyD and Wombat didn't mention it on the Cagcast, a really good and hyped release came out on WiiWare called: Strong Bad's Cool Game for Attractive People -- Episode 1: Homestar Ruiner.

In it, you control Strong Bad, the internet icon from http://www.homestarrunner.com . In the game, you run around in typical adventure game action (Phoenix Wright, King's Quest, Sam & Max, etc) trying to solve problems that Strong Bad faces.

The game is really ing funny and really faithful to the cartoons they show on their website. Oh course you'd expect this, but Penny Arcade proved us wrong (burn!). The whole game also features the characters voices. So much so, that I think half the memory for this game is used for it. Speaking of space, this thing takes up around 250 blocks of data: a good chunk.

There are even neat little mini games like Teen Girl Squad in which you try to comical kill all the girls and Snake Fighter 5:...

Wii60: charging your 360 controller without noise

By thorbahn3 07-30-2008 11:54 AM
I own a plug N play kit for my wireless 360 controller. It's a great, cheap little device that keeps me from replacing batteries. The only problem I have is when I plug it into my 360's USB port and turn off the console. The damn thing keeps buzzing and whirling like it normally does which gets distracting while you're trying to do something else. Instead, I plug the device into my Wii which is on standby mode. Because of this, I just need to plug my controller in, no noise, no fuse. Thought you might like to know.
