What makes a bland, tired and trusted game genre interesting? Why it's a new and interesting game mechanic! Like a FPS where you're a vampire and you can only regain health by biting the necks of still living enemies. (Has this been done? I've got dibs on this if it hasn't.) Anyways it's Three of the Best Game Mechanics ever.

Silent Hill's Radio

I can hear you. In a series with a dark spooky atmosphere, nothing quite heightens your senses like a burst of static over your radio. It's radar for the ears. Certainly it's a signature of the series. Play a Silent Hill game long enough and you discern just what exactly is lurking in the shadows and if your sound system is up to it, where it is and where it's going. One of the best things about the radio though, is it doesn't need a HUD. Adding just another bit to that whole immersion factor.

Sometimes once isn't enough. Some things deserve a another shot with better technology. So it's Three Games that Deserve a 3-Make.
3-Make: A remake for the Playstation 3 and/or Xbox 360. Similar too Wii-make. Nominated for most cringe worthy word zenprime has ever created.

Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver

The Wheel of Fate deserves another turn. So reboot the franchise. And this time it deserves to be everything it couldn't be on the PlayStation 1 and Dreamcast. I remember reading previews in game magazines (Ah the days when print media was the best source for the lasted info) about vampire worshipers and their high priestess, hidden cities and more abilities. Sadly some didn't make it out of concept, while others weren't incorporated into the final version. Though the blow was softened when I discovered unused audio from the cut portions with Playstation...

Long intro ignored, it's Three IPs that should be Swapped. Or it was. Until I decided some people don't deserve nice things(Aka Bloggers Block). So it's Three IPs that should be Liberated (by force if necessary) and who they should be given to.

Duke Nukem

When it's done? Yeah right. 3D Realms has taken so long to bring the world a new Duke game that even OCD'ing perfectionists can at least take pride in that there is someone worse then them. So much has happened since DNF was announced. How much? Check The Duke Nukem Forever List. Alright, alright. So who should get the rights to the Duke? Valve? They have similiar ideas about when to release a game, more realistic though. Bungie? They could pull of the gameplay and the multiplayer, but maybe not the humor. So how about Free Radical. Sure they're kinda dead now, but all they need is a fresh cash

Just how many times have you driven the Nazis out of France? I know you bad dudes have saved the president so many times you wonder just what the secret service does. I bet the last time you wielded a dragon slayer sword with the power to split the heavens was sometime last month. Look we've all been there before, be it saving the town from zombies to saving the world from a pretty boy who got picked last for sports in elementary school. It's about time we got Three Largely Unexplored Scenarios/Settings for Video Games.

The Blitz

The Nazi assault on Britain. Over a year of bombing. London herself faced 57 continuous nights of attacks. Air raid sirens, bomb shelters, fires, unexploded ordinance, bombed buildings. Why has no one explored this setting? It's perfect for a survival horror or adventure game. The nature of an event like The Blitz...

For this Three Things on Thursday, err Friday, okay just about Saturday it's Three Things That Need to Change in JRPGs.

Remember when JRPGs seemed new and interesting? When traveling a strange and unique world to save it from darkness and destruction was unique? When heroes and villains who were strong yet suspiciously feminine looking were cool? When the forced romance subplot didn't seem so forced?

Okay, I don't know when that mythic time existed either. But doesn't it seem that Japan is just phoning it in these days in regard to JRPGs? Well besides Square-Enix, who seems to be persuing an agenda to replace already overblown standards of beauty with one centered on androgynous fair skinned people with perfect hair. Just remember when you first see licensed Final Fantasy hair care, skin cream, and cosmetic products, I called it.

Thank goodness the holidays are over. My Christmas... I got four things. A 6 day survival kit for my car, a sonicare toothbrush, a silly little magnetic toy stocking stuffer, and Dead Space for PS3. Yeah. At least I needed the sonicare toothbrush since my old one died. Oh well at least my folks mean well. Maybe next year I'll get time at a gun range or signed up for some sort of outdoor survival class.

Mediocre, delayed Christmas out of the way, it's Three of the Best Mid-Bosses.

Lu Bu

Do NOT persue Lu Bu. It's pretty much the most memorable line of Dynasty Warriors 3. You veterans of The Battle of Hou Lou Gate know what I mean. What makes Lu Bu such a great Mid Boss is the terror and hilarity he brings. He's not the final boss, hell you don't even have to fight him, you can just avoid him in just about any battle he shows up in. Still your

Hey it's Christmas! Or it was, technically. For you. My Christmas was postponed till this weekend so my family can all celebrate together. So you'll just have to put up with my humbug attitude on the whole deal. Long story short, Three Things I should have gotten for Christmas. If I actually get any of these I will be amazed.

Xbox 360

Really, I have nothing against the 360. Except the RROD. And really no one is cool with that. I don't own and have not bought a 360 for a very simple reason: games. The Xbox 360 just doesn't have enough exclusive games I'm interested in for me to buy it for myself. Sure it would be cool to have and I'd play the hell out one if I got one, but nearly all of the 360 exlcusive games I'm interested in will be released for PC eventually. Hell, Gears of War 1 and Mass Effect are already there. But it's because...

Ugh. Snow. Snow. Snow! It simultaneously brings me hate and joy. Hatred of driving through it, and joy for the holiday season. I just know my hours this month are going to be shot to hell and back. Wait this a blog about Winter, it's Three Things on Thursday. And with less whining it's Three Decent Anime Games:

Ghost in the Shell (PS1)

Not that SAC. The other Ghost in the Shell. The PS1 game is based on the characters and events of the original manga with the voice actors from the dub of the movie lending their talents. It's a third person shooterwhere you pilot a mini tank capable of adhering to just about any flat surface. The gameplay is pretty solid, but it's the presentation and adherence to the license that really rounds out the package with plenty of animated cutscenes, and mission briefings mimic the 3D wireframe-esk onces from the movie. It's

I play a lot of games. And even though I buy a bunch of games each year, somehow I find myself gravitating back to old favorites. For this Three Things on Thursday it's Three of my personal classics:

Castlevania: Symphony of the Night

I know this is it's own kind of sacrilege... but SotN is the only Castlevania I've ever owned, let alone beaten. And I've played it start to true finish on PS1 through PS3 including my PSP. SotN is a sort of guilty pleasure, even the lower level monsters and bosses look cool, the art is and music is gorgeous and you never really feel the need to grind for anything. It starts out fairly innocent, tired of yet another round of collection missions, mandatory tutorials, another minigame or the old die-quick load-die-quick load-die process I'll pop in SotN. "Ehh, it's been awhile, maybe I'll just do a quick circuit of...

This week I'd like to talk about something I've experienced in Gaming. For lack of a better term, a three stage process I'm calling HypeBoundCeptance.
HypeBoundCeptance: Hype'd to buy, Rebound from shame/disappointment, into Acceptance aka "I love this game!" (Okay, I just like making up terms and defining them. It's silly fun)
Anyway, Today's Three Things on Thursday is about three games that have driven me though HypeBoundCeptance.

Assassin's Creed

My #3 Pre-order of Shame returns. Yes indeed. I was so excited to get Assassin's Creed. I remember rushing over to gamestop to pick up my copy on release day, rushing home, popping it into my PS3 and saying "There's more then this, right?" Now, I'm not saying I was as excited as others who pre-ordered it (I was sucked in by the screens and game play videos, not who was shilling it),

For Thanksgiving I'll keep this intro short, Three Things I'm Thankful For:

Wireless Controllers

Wires are gone. Remember that nightmare? Someone was playing a game and you had to walk in front of them? Or the dog was coming over? And the biggest concern wasn't blocking the screen but tripping over the mess of wires and possibly pulling the console off the shelf. Sure there have always been wireless controllers, some official, most third-party. But they've mostly been a trade off in performance, while costing more and eating up batteries. Having wireless controllers be standard for everyone this generation isn't just nice, it's about time. The added touch of play-and-charge for the 360 and PS3 is especially nice. Nothing sucks more then having to swap controllers out because the battery died. And Remote power on? YES! Still though, wish the PS3...

Wow, last week was a hell. I said I wouldn't do my paper last second and I didn't. I did it last minute and finished last second. Not for love of trying to start and finish it weeks before mind you. I hate research papers. But I love MLA style. Gods bless double-spacing. So I missed last Thursday's three things, I considered the sacrifice of my time towards grades a bit more necessary. And the seven days in between? Sleep, video games and price watching. Call it a pressure release. Alright now that I've done prostrating myself, it's Three of my Fondest Gaming Memories:

Beating Homeworld 1

Yes, Homeworld (The Ladder). Homeworld has a special place in my memories. I remember guiding my persistant fleet through tough, sometimes crazy missions. Initially I did my best just to survive, but once I could steal enemy ships I did my best to grow my fleet and keep the rare but deadly ships I had collected alive. The final mission

I've renamed this weekly post of mine to Three Things on Thursday. I figured it was less annoying and cutesy then This Thursday's Three Things. Yadda yadda yadda, this week it's Three Things I nearly Blogged about in this spot:

Video Game Clichés

Video Game clichés are not anything new, hell it's probably one of the topics any sort of blog, magazine or forum about video games must mention at least once a year. Why was I going to blog about this? With all the great sequels coming out, I couldn't help but be reminded about them. Who can forget such clichés like: Starting from Scratch, The World is once again/still/hey this time it's your fault that its screwed, Oh look, its the ethnic minority, And my all time favorite Metal Bikini +10def fireproof. I choose not to devote the entire blog to this because a list of video game clichés is cliché....

It's Halloween. And well, the holiday has lost it's magic too me over the years. But that does not mean I don't enjoy a good scary, spooky, fear-inciting experience. So in this delayed Three Things, it's Three of my favorite scary games! Unfortunately my cheap ass nature has prevented me from picking up Silent Hill 5 and Dead Space, so I can't comment on their nature to make me turn off the tv and read nice comforting books before bed.

BioShock

BioShock? Yeah, I understand how some might not have found their tour of Rapture frightful. Near the end of the game, your character was so amped on plasmids and powered up weapons that the final boss didn't stand a chance. Still the overall essance of the game, the surroundings, the characters, the ambient sounds, they gave off such a creepy aura. I could only play so much of the game at a time. Eventually I had

This week on in the Three Spot, It's Three Things I want from Warhawk!

I love Warhawk. Originally I purchased it for the headset, and never in my wildest dreams did I imagine a online only multiplayer 3PS would be my most played PS3 game. Discovering CAG Warhawk only exacerbated that love. The list of excuses for missing CAG Warhawk Nights is very, very short. GGL Base Rape Rash is on the list though... so getting that out of the way here are three things I want from Warhawk:

Assault Gametype
Assault maps are nothing new to online games, and I know many feel they're nothing more then a one sided Control Point variation. But Warhawk doesn't handle the control points(CPs) in the standard linked-CPs-take-one at a time manner. Warhawk's unlinked system allows

This week it's all about the PSN. And while I wait for fansubs it's Three things the PSN needs... and Three things it doesn't:

Three Things the PlayStation Network Needs:

1. Classic Board Games

Chess, Checkers, Chinese Checkers, Go, Backgammon, Monopoly, Scrabble, Risk. Why aren't these and others on the PSN? I don't know why simple versions of gaming classics aren't available as part of the PSN for local and online play. And I mean simple, not cel-shaded visuals or 7.1 dolby digital surround, just the games. The only complex thing to add would be PSeye support. Plenty of people play simple games everyday at Yahoo or MSN, so why not on today's generation of online-enabled consoles? At the very least we'd be looking at Sony's ads and not someone else's.

It's been six days, almost seven, so here are Three Games I want from Relic:

Homeworld 3

Okay, got to get this one out of the way. I want a third homeworld game. I want it bad. Not only did I play the hell out of the original games, but I played the hell out of many of the great mods, got into tweaking the game myself, and with HW2 worked with others as part of the PDS mod team for awhile. Hell I still play HW2 and do my best to maintain my own personal "House Special" mix of mods for private use. I love the Homeworld series. Of all of the series I've ever played, it's safe to say nothing tops Homeworld for the biggest chunk of my video game playing life. A continuation of this great series with the attention to storytelling, music, and design that has made it so loved would be very well recieved. Hell, we need a HW3 or how else are the best...

Apparently I've recovered just enough to forget how to tell time, or the G-men had me locked away in a secret prison and I lost a day. But since it just was Thursday not too long ago, I may as well tell you about Three Games I want from Ubisoft:

Assassin's Creed 2

It's that thing, that means something, that if you totally play the game, you know something about. Maybe.

Yes, I want a sequel to my #3 pre-order of shame. Why? Because while I did feel the hype was overblown and it wasn't worth my $59.99 (I'll talk about price-dating in another blog), I did really like the game once I got over the misconceptions. The story was interesting, and I could just explore the cities of the Holy Land without ever doing anything. I loved daring myself to see just how far and how high I could go. Of course the problem is, the way the game ended. Arg! I...

The Light Warriors haven't surmounted the Final Dungeon that is my apartment and begun the final boss battle, so I may as well prattle on about Three Games I want from Blizzard:

StarCraft: Ghost

Wasn't this canceled? Yeah, this has come, stalled and faded away. And I'm still pissed about it. The StarCaft universe is an interesting one (Let's leave the whole 40k argument aside) and a 3D action/shooter game would not harm the StarCraft Legacy. I was looking forward to taking on Zerg and Protoss in close quarters, and possibly taking some of the series signature vehicles for a destructive spin. I blame it's cancellation on Blizzard's philosophy of perfection, which thankfully isn't as anal as it is over at 3D Relms, "When it's done,"...

Well Brother Cavil hasn't declared me frakked for eternity and boxed my line so I'm free to report on Three Games I want from LucasArts:

More Grim Fandango

Come on LucasArts, contract out a Grim Fandango game to Tim Schafer and crew over at Double Fine and make this happen. Remember Sam and Max? Huh, look how nice that's doing on Gametap. You know, you could do something similar and bring some true episodic love to the consoles. And along the way resuscitate a dead franchise that has found a certain afterlife online. There is always more stories to tell of Crime and Corruption in the Land of the Dead.
