Three Things on Thursday |
|
This week I'd like to talk about something I've experienced in Gaming. For lack of a better term, a three stage process I'm calling HypeBoundCeptance.
HypeBoundCeptance: Hype'd to buy, Rebound from shame/disappointment, into Acceptance aka "I love this game!" (Okay, I just like making up terms and defining them. It's silly fun)Anyway, Today's Three Things on Thursday is about three games that have driven me though HypeBoundCeptance. Assassin's Creed ...My #3 Pre-order of Shame returns. Yes indeed. I was so excited to get Assassin's Creed. I remember rushing over to gamestop to pick up my copy on release day, rushing home, popping it into my PS3 and saying "There's more then this, right?" Now, I'm not saying I was as excited as others who pre-ordered it (I was sucked in by the screens and game play videos, not who was shilling it), |

Black Friday: The Aftermath |
|
I woke at a bright and early 12:30am this morning to gear up for my wait outside Best Buy. I was very lucky as it was not as cold as last year, and I ended making quick friends with guys in line behind me. Still I did watch a couple of hours of TV shows and play some games on my PSP in my best efforts to kill time. The atmosphere was quite jovial and there was no problems at all with the crowd. Once the doors opened I breezed though Best Buy grabbing the items I wanted while doing my best to make my way towards the line for the computer pickup and checkout. Even though it wasn't more then 10 minutes after the door had opened, the line snaked around several aisles and I was left to slap down my portable stool and wait it out. In all I spent close to 2 hours in that line, watching as others gave up to try again later and a idiot Geek Squad member tried to inform us they |

Three Things on Thursday |
|
For Thanksgiving I'll keep this intro short, Three Things I'm Thankful For:
Wireless Controllers Wires are gone. Remember that nightmare? Someone was playing a game and you had to walk in front of them? Or the dog was coming over? And the biggest concern wasn't blocking the screen but tripping over the mess of wires and possibly pulling the console off the shelf. Sure there have always been wireless controllers, some official, most third-party. But they've mostly been a trade off in performance, while costing more and eating up batteries. Having wireless controllers be standard for everyone this generation isn't just nice, it's about time. The added touch of play-and-charge for the 360 and PS3 is especially nice. Nothing sucks more then having to swap controllers out because the battery died. And Remote power on? YES! Still though, wish the PS3... |

Black Friday |
|
Black Friday is near. Just about all the ads have been "leaked" and the pre-Black Friday sales are at hand. And for me, no TV that fits my specifications in my price range. So no TV this year. It's a good thing. I would rather save my money for a TV I want, then settling for less. But I have been a touch naughty, I jumped on the Hanns-G 22" Widescreen moniter from Newegg already, should be delievered by Friday no less. I have spied some deals I'm interested in grabbing on BF. Specifically a Toshiba laptop, a Logitech Harmony remote, and Transformers on BD all at Best Buy. I'm also hoping to see some good prices on other BDs and PS3 games. So this year I really have to brave the cold and boredom of a line. But if you ask me if it was worth waiting last year, I'd say yes. It's only one morning of a four day weekend after all. Even if I miss out on the doorbusters, |

Three Things on Thursday |
|
Wow, last week was a hell. I said I wouldn't do my paper last second and I didn't. I did it last minute and finished last second. Not for love of trying to start and finish it weeks before mind you. I hate research papers. But I love MLA style. Gods bless double-spacing. So I missed last Thursday's three things, I considered the sacrifice of my time towards grades a bit more necessary. And the seven days in between? Sleep, video games and price watching. Call it a pressure release. Alright now that I've done prostrating myself, it's Three of my Fondest Gaming Memories:
Beating Homeworld 1 Yes, Homeworld (The Ladder). Homeworld has a special place in my memories. I remember guiding my persistant fleet through tough, sometimes crazy missions. Initially I did my best just to survive, but once I could steal enemy ships I did my best to grow my fleet and keep the rare but deadly ships I had collected alive. The final mission |

Valkyria Chronicles Anime |
|
Before the work day from hell dumped all over me (Even though I'm home it's still not over), I was surprised to learn about a Valkyria Chronicles Anime coming out April 2009 in Japan. The show will be handled by A-1 Pictures, who are working on Kannagi and the current season of the Birdy the Mighty: Decode TV series. The fine folks over at the deliciously NSFW Sankaku Complex doubt it will be a 2D/3D hybrid, but I hope they at least retain the whole "drawn" effect of the game. I wonder what direction the TV series will go since there is already a manga focused on a more "Boy's Love" type angle. Either way, more merchandise! Though it's not like there isn't figures and gashapon already. Also any word on if the US is going to get the DLC for Valkyria Chronicles that JPN and HK have? I've just about given up on Disgaea 3 DLC coming over. |

My November Declaration!
By zenprime 11-05-2008 03:18 PM

|
Finally! November has arrived! I've been waiting for this for a long time. New Bond Movie, Resistance 2, Naruto PS3, Thanksgiving, and BLACK FRIDAY! My Black Friday and Christmas Shopping savings accounts are plump and ripe, and now all I need is the circulars for the strategic planning to begin. But to prevent me from dipping into my wallet and going over my budgeted limit for frivolous spending I must lay down some harsh rules:

Three Things... |
|
It's Halloween. And well, the holiday has lost it's magic too me over the years. But that does not mean I don't enjoy a good scary, spooky, fear-inciting experience. So in this delayed Three Things, it's Three of my favorite scary games! Unfortunately my cheap ass nature has prevented me from picking up Silent Hill 5 and Dead Space, so I can't comment on their nature to make me turn off the tv and read nice comforting books before bed.
BioShock ...BioShock? Yeah, I understand how some might not have found their tour of Rapture frightful. Near the end of the game, your character was so amped on plasmids and powered up weapons that the final boss didn't stand a chance. Still the overall essance of the game, the surroundings, the characters, the ambient sounds, they gave off such a creepy aura. I could only play so much of the game at a time. Eventually I had |

Four Things...
By zenprime 10-24-2008 03:01 AM
|
|
Wow, today was unexpectedly busy for me. I had to help my folks with a Great Dane they decided to rescue, someone finally subbed ToraDora ep 4, I got into the R2 Beta, gah. So I'm in a pretty upbeat mood, even though earlier I decided to blab about Four Things I HATE about the PS3. It's four because two aren't all that big, but they still inspires HATE in me all the same.
Messaging Swapping messages on the PS3 is turtle slow. Email is faster. Why? Because then at least both parties are guaranteed a keyboard. And the predictive dictionary seems to work against you then for you. You can't even IM. It's just messaging. Want to attempt conversation? either leave your game and enter a chat or leave your PS3 and get on your PC. Oh yes, it's locked to the PS3. Is it to much to ask for a little integration? My cell phone has IM and email! How about... |

It's my CAGiversary!

|
It's my CAGiversary! So I hope you'll excuse me, because I have some things I'd like to say.
Today marks a year since I first joined Cheap Ass Gamer. I've gone from being a total lurker to being a bit more sociable in the PS3 forum, I've become a semi-regular CAG blogger (semi-regular of late), and I've been warmly received by the CAG PSN gaming groups, especially Warhawk. This year has been pretty good to me, especially when it comes to video game purchases, I think I've only paid full price on one or two games once since this time last year. I know saved a bunch thanks to everyone here. Truthfully I can't remember exactly how I discovered CAG: google, a blog post, a link on another deal site, who knows. But I know I first joined CAG to get access to the Black Friday ads posted in the deal forum. It was my second Black Friday, and I was determined... |

Three Things... |
|
This week on in the Three Spot, It's Three Things I want from Warhawk!
I love Warhawk. Originally I purchased it for the headset, and never in my wildest dreams did I imagine a online only multiplayer 3PS would be my most played PS3 game. Discovering CAG Warhawk only exacerbated that love. The list of excuses for missing CAG Warhawk Nights is very, very short. GGL Base Rape Rash is on the list though... so getting that out of the way here are three things I want from Warhawk: Assault Gametype Assault maps are nothing new to online games, and I know many feel they're nothing more then a one sided Control Point variation. But Warhawk doesn't handle the control points(CPs) in the standard linked-CPs-take-one at a time manner. Warhawk's unlinked system allows |

Japanese OCD Toys

I'm sure you've all seen the digital bubble wrap toys. But really who needs the pleasure of bubble popping when you have such things like endless banana peeling and perforated package opening?
Anyway the sound of peeling this banana is provided by Saki Fujita, known for providing the sound data for Hatsune Miku aka Vocaloid2. I'm extra curious to hear this in action. This is just plain weird. Out of all the everyday things people do, I can kinda understand peeling a banana, but opening boxes? I'll admit to a certain fondness for the "snap-hiss" of opening a soda can and the "POP" of unscrewing a jar with a safety button the first time. Perforated box opening was not on my radar. Oh don't forget to check out the crazy video, it's um, |

For some time I've been meaning to knock this out, but when my primary computer broke down things got out of hand. But now that she's been shipped back and I'm home myself from house sitting I decided to show you where I game. This is where I fly from on CAG Warhawk nights.
![]() This is the living room of my apartment. You can see my cheap Ikea entertainment center and coffee table. My TV is a 37" Olevia from last Black Friday, I hope to pick up something in the range of 40"-50" size this year. Off to the right is my secondary computer which is plugged directly into the TV. When my computer was in the shop I used it for everything, but now it's back to serving up media to my classic Xbox, PS3, and primary computer. ![]() This is my new desk, another piece from Ikea.... |

Three Things... |
|
This week it's all about the PSN. And while I wait for fansubs it's Three things the PSN needs... and Three things it doesn't:
Three Things the PlayStation Network Needs: ...1. Classic Board Games Chess, Checkers, Chinese Checkers, Go, Backgammon, Monopoly, Scrabble, Risk. Why aren't these and others on the PSN? I don't know why simple versions of gaming classics aren't available as part of the PSN for local and online play. And I mean simple, not cel-shaded visuals or 7.1 dolby digital surround, just the games. The only complex thing to add would be PSeye support. Plenty of people play simple games everyday at Yahoo or MSN, so why not on today's generation of online-enabled consoles? At the very least we'd be looking at Sony's ads and not someone else's. 2. PSN IDs: Online Anywhere |

Fall Anime - Snap Decisions
By zenprime 10-08-2008 03:17 AM
|
|
Well the fall anime season has started. I usually start off the season trying to catch all the shows that spark my interest, and weed out the shows I won't watch. So to get this over with, here is my take on what's coming out of Japan:
Gundam 00 S2 I'm a Gundam fan. You know that by now if you read this blog. Gundam 00 S2 is the second season of Gundam 00 that aired last year. I wasn't too terribly impressed with the first season until about the half way point when the I took a shining to the antagonists. Truthfully I watched in hopes of seeing the "Good Guys" get beaten. And I'm in the same boat again. Is that a bad reason to like a show? I'll continue to watch this week by week, as the mecha on mecha action in this title seems to be unrivaled so far. That said, I'm not expecting the magnum opus of Turn A Gundam but I do know it'll be far better... |

Three Games I want from... |
|
It's been six days, almost seven, so here are Three Games I want from Relic:
Homeworld 3 Okay, got to get this one out of the way. I want a third homeworld game. I want it bad. Not only did I play the hell out of the original games, but I played the hell out of many of the great mods, got into tweaking the game myself, and with HW2 worked with others as part of the PDS mod team for awhile. Hell I still play HW2 and do my best to maintain my own personal "House Special" mix of mods for private use. I love the Homeworld series. Of all of the series I've ever played, it's safe to say nothing tops Homeworld for the biggest chunk of my video game playing life. A continuation of this great series with the attention to storytelling, music, and design that has made it so loved would be very well recieved. Hell, we need a HW3 or how else are the best... |

Monday Manga - Highschool of the Dead
By zenprime 09-29-2008 05:50 PM
|
|
What is your favorite Zombie Movie? Personally I love the original Day of the Dead, the Dawn of the Dead remake, along with 28 Days later, and of course Shaun of the Dead. If you want to talk Zombie novels, it's all about Max Brooks' World War Z (Audiobook version has an all star cast, I recommend a listen if you like the book). But when it comes to manga, the eventual Zombipocalypse doesn't seem to have the same attraction as it does in the West.
But this, this is love letter to genre. This is Highschool of the Dead. Highschool of the Dead is an ongoing manga written by Daisuke Sato and illustrated by Shouji Sato. Shouji Sato's work is better known under the name of Inazuma/Digital Accel Works by fans of h-manga (Apologies to Daisuke Sato if he is part of Inazuma/DAW as well, I'm unaware if it's one person, a duo or a cirlce). It follows a group |
