I can remember when I would crawl out of bed at night ever so quietly to play video games. The first thing I had to do was put a towel at the base of the door so the light from the TV wouldn’t show through and alert my parents across the hall. Secondly, I would hold my breath as I turned the knob to turn on my TV, because the click was so damn loud. I would sit indian style on the floor and stare into the screen for hours. River Raid, Pit-Fall, Haunted House, E.T., Berserk, Ka Boom were never as good without the sound on but the magic was still there. I would play for hours until I slipped off the back of the crocodiles’ head in Pit-Fall too many times or the frustration of trying to get E.T. out of the hole with the flower in it would overwhelm me. Eventually, I crawl back into bed feeling satisfied that I had pulled another fast one on my parents.
Fast forward 30 years to last night. It was around 9:45pm and my wife and boy had gone to bed. I went to the kitchen and grabbed a beer... |
