Finally got a night where I got some friends all together to play some Battlefield 1943 and all the textures looked all funny. Turned my machine off and then I get this. (sigh) Not again this is my 5th one, thankfully my three years is up next Feb. so this one is fully covered... Guess I'll finally get some time to play Halo 2 for Vista like I always wanted. |

Disappointed with Prototype

I was looking forward to this game and finally a copy for rent showed up in my local video store so I gave it a try. At first I really liked the game, the gore and endless killing was fun at first. Taking down a tank and helicopter with punches and kicks or later just taking it over for your own use was really cool. Also I got into the whole consuming people to take their memories and fill in the parts to Alex's story. As for replay valued I found the side missions interesting enough to keep trying them out for a little extra fun. If I had stopped about halfway thru the game I probably would write something different and that I loved the game. But the last 1/4th of the game I started to change my mind. The endless consuming people to keep your health up to use devastator attacks during missions or boss fights got monotonous. Beat on a monster or destroy some target,... |

Did pretty well during the Hollywood Video $5 game sale!

I have to say I really love the Cheap Ass Gamer website and over the past year I have picked up some really great sales that I never would have picked up on in the past. The latest has to be the best at Hollywood Video where all used game s29.99 and under were $5! The clerk even asked me about how I knew about it so fast since they just got the info on it and I hope I got another reader for CAG. Anyway, I Hit the two nearest stores and got pretty lucky I think. All for the 360 I got... Mercenaries 2 Devil May Cry 4 Supreme Commander Dark Messiah Command and Conquer 3 Farcry 2 Beowulf Golden Axe Beast Rider Fable II Need for Speed Carbon Hour of Victory Fear Files Maybe not some of the AAA titles but still this is gonna keep me gaming for awhile. Ohhh when my wife saw the stack she nearly... |

Battlefield 1943, love it!

This has to be one of the arcade games I have looked forward to most since the Xbox came out. Could be I was influenced by all the hours of fun I had with 1942 when it came out back in the day and how many of my non-gamer friends that would get excited about going to the local lan gaming spot for a BF night. Was a little worried the first day nothing worked but I finally was able to get on a server tonight and played 2 hours straight and had to tear myself away from it or I would have played it all night. Can't wait till some of my friends pick it up and we can have some fun as a squad. Maybe even pick up the achievement... Yeah it's changed a little bit with less classes and made a bit more simple for most part but it's great to just get in for a couple of games and still get a lot of fun out of it. The destructible environments are pretty cool... |

1 vs 100 sorry Iowa no prizes for you! |
|
When I first saw this 1 vs 100 story on Joystiq I said to myself please don't let Iowa be one of the states and damn... I was really looking forward to this and then to learn I have no chance at a prize it killed the idea for me. I just should hit a bar and play some bar trivia there. Really, Iowa has laws that spook the Microsoft lawyers? I can head in any direction north, east, west and south for a hour or so and hit a casino. A few years back we had video gambling machines in convenience stores. I think Iowa is pretty down with the whole idea of gambling in the state. But what really upset me is that yesterday I got a Pepsi out of the vending machine and it had a Pepsi/Rockband contest where I won a free code for a song. Thought that was pretty cool until I wondered what the difference between this and the Microsoft Points and free games they give... |

Bionic Failure |
|
My game rental store of choice is pretty bare of new games the last couple of months but I found a copy of Bionic Commando, actually they had all their copies back which I thought was kinda weird. But I picked it up and gave it a couple of plays over two nights. What really annoyed me right off was the radiation areas, I can't tell you how many times I would swing just a little off and bam radiation area, dead, game over! I just don't understand that part of the game, I would be more happy with invisible walls stopping my progress to a certain area, this was just frustrating. Also the whole drowning thing if you dropped into water and then had to search for something to grab onto was another least favorite part of the gameplay. I get the idea behind the swinging and having to time it right but it just isn't that fun after playing... |

Damnation! |
|
I think fate was trying to tell me not to bother with this game when I went to my local video store to rent it and they hadn't even put it out by Friday night. I could even see it sitting on the counter in the corner of the store but the person I asked about it didn't seem to interested in putting it out. But I did leave them my number to call me when they put it out on the shelf which they finally did today. I really have to say I hate this game after playing it a couple hours, I was hopeful for something a little different with the steampunk story but all this is is a crappy shooter. I felt like I had to pump a few too many bullets into each enemy to put them down and sometimes found myself dying quickly without having a good idea from which direction the fire was coming from. Also the gameplay was a little glitchy for me and one example that was... |

X-Men Origins Wolverine Un-Caged Edition
By mrnivek 05-10-2009 04:59 PM
|
![]() I was lucky enough to pick this up finally last wednesday from my local video store. I have to say I enjoyed this quite a bit more then the movie. Too bad they couldn't have made the movie a R rating and have scenes like in the beginning of the game? Anyway I loved this game, felt like I was playing something similar to Devil May Cry or God of War which are both games I very much like. I don't know what it is but ripping enemies apart over and over different ways the game allows you to just felt satisfying. I think you could even go back and play it again on the harder setting and continue to level Wolverine and his abilities for a little move fun and to finish out some achievements. I like games like this and that Capcom makes that allows you to go back and replay with your current weapon or level at harder levels. Only a couple bad things nagged me while... |

Video Store Let Down
By mrnivek 05-02-2009 09:35 PM
|
![]() Last month or so has been pretty slow for 360 games and top of that I keep missing my chance on any games that I might have some interest in. Probably just too much competition for too few games right now. I hoped to right after work pick up the new X-Men Origins Wolverine game which sounded like it was going to be a bit better than your run of the wham-bam movie tie in game. Well, at my local Hollywood Video I noticed that they got only 3 copies of the Wolverine game which were all out. But then I saw they had like 6 or 7 of Velvet Assassin. Not one of them was checked out and I really have seen very little interest in this game from others or myself. It’s just about as bad as when Hollywood Video got 6 to 8 copies of Golden Axe: Beast Rider. Who is going to rent that? To whoever does the ordering what a waste… I guess on the upside I get a chance to play |

Gave RE5 another try
By mrnivek 04-12-2009 01:59 PM
|
![]() In a earlier blog I mentioned my problems with Resident Evil 5 and the problems I had with it. Well, I decided to pick it back up and give it a second shot without my friend playing co-op. I rather would have played it co-op with him but so many said this is a good game I wanted to see more of it for myself. I still think the controls are screwed for a game these days but I got used to it after the first chapter with the right set up. I enjoyed the fighting once I figured out shooting the enemies in the leg then killing them with a melee punch worked about the best. Also I figured out I didn’t have to kill everything… After that I had fun along the way. The action is pretty over the top in some spots and the boss fights are what I really looked forward to in the end. Too bad this was a rental I think I could have spent a bit of time leveling things up and running thru |

Wanted: Weapons of Fate & House of the Dead: Overkill
By mrnivek 04-04-2009 10:08 AM
|
![]() Finished up a couple games this past week, Wanted: Weapons of Fate and House of the Dead: Overkill. Weapons of Fate was a fun game for about 5 hours or so, really short. I think it was okay to be so short because any longer and whatever they added would really felt like filler. Wesley in this continuation of the story reeeeealy is cocky during the cut-scenes and almost became annoying. Weird since in the movie he was more a sympathetic character, now he is just a wisecracking killer. Anyway the special attack of curved bullets was fun for awhile but got boring near the end, kinda wished they had more weapons then the pistols and machine pistols with a sniper/machine turret scene here and there. Don’t think this would be great game at full price but $20 in the bargin bin and I might pick it up to run thru the other levels in the different... |

Finished up Eat Lead
By mrnivek 03-27-2009 05:19 PM

![]() You know I went into this game with low expectations and didn’t think it was all that bad. The story is cheesy with Matt Hazard being a washed up video game hero making fun of the very video game he is in. I think the game was long enough that this didn’t get too annoying. I think one of the funnier lines was when your character tells you he is going to finish things up and get the so and so achievement. About the achievements, you can’t beat getting 60 achievement points for just watching the credits. You don’t even have to beat the game to watch the credits either… The game was pretty generous with the achievement points and I think I got 700 or so without really trying to get any of them. But a couple of things did annoy me during the game, first the aiming was just off. A lot of times I swear I was aiming at the enemy and crosshairs were red but still it |

Disappointed

![]() I was really looking forward to this game and playing some more co-op with one of my friends. I enjoyed the Resident Evil 1 and 2 back in the day and thought this would be a good one to jump back into the series. I think playing this co-op is how you would get the most fun out of it. From what I have heard the ai of the Sheeva is a little off and you have to baby sit her a little to much. Anyway, I think we played it about a hour before my friend gave up in frustration. He was used to shooters like Halo, Gears and Call of Duty and right off the bat he was complaining the controls was screwed and before the first boss he gave up and said he couldn’t play it any longer. When I played the demo I knew the controls were a bit different and I just thought when the full game comes out and my friend is playing that things would get better and we would get used to it. We just kept... |

Been playing Halo Wars |
![]() My impressions so far on Halo Wars is mixed. On the one hand I love Halo and they could sucker me in on just about anything with that name on it and I will give it a try. I have played thru about 6 of the missions so far and my favorite parts are the cut scenes which add to the earlier Halo story. As for the bad I think I have confirmed to myself I just really don’t like RTS very much. Oh I get a kick out of seeing the UNSC units, especially the Spartans, running around beating on tanks and warthogs running over troops. But even with the slimmed down RTS experience I just don’t have my attention held like other games and often will play a couple missions and then put it down. Then later on I seem to always find a excuse not to pick it up again, heck I had more fun finishing 50 Cent Blood in the Sand! I can’t see myself purchasing this, even renting... |

Fiddy Cent: Blood in the Sand |
![]() My latest rental and probably one of the shortest games recently is 50 Cent Blood in the sand. Total of 9 chapters, 7 taking up about a hour each and a couple vehicle levels which blow by pretty quick. (I read somewhere he was shot 9 times and that is why there are 9 chapters, really?) Anyway, I always heard that the original one Bulletproof was one of the worst games out there but most reviews I saw said this sequel was a fairly fun game. I have to agree this was a fun game and it looked pretty good. It plays like part Army of Two and The Club. You probably would get the most fun out of this playing co-op as one of 50’s G-unit members. The scoring scenarios was fun and pushed you to do certain things in game play like shoot 3 thugs before 20 seconds is up or get to some defined area before the clock ran out. This added to your point total as well as finding hidden posters, cash and targets. Some scenarios will... |

Finally got around to playing Godfather |
![]() My latest rental is The Godfather, was the only sandbox game that I haven’t played and for some reason at my local video store it was always rented. I have to say after playing it a bit I really enjoyed it. It plays just like a older GTA game and you play as someone making his way up the family ladder to finally become the don. What I enjoyed the most was the extorting of local business’s and slapping around the shop owners trying to figure out what worked best to get them to pay up. Laughed out loud the first time I by accident threw a shop owner into his own oven… Also weaving your character into the Godfather story without changing it was interesting and my favorite mission has to be putting the horse head in the movie producers bed. The only part that was disappointing was all the Microsoft points you could blow on getting a certain gun or the most powerful body guard... |

Finished F.E.A.R. 2 |
![]() Just finished F.E.A.R. 2 and enjoyed it, not the best shooter out there but enough to keep my attention all the way to the end. The whole horror angle didn’t really work, it wasn’t really scary. Only once did I get surprised by Alma, turned around once in the game expecting a soldier and it was Alma. Whoa! That was a perfectly placed event, but for the most part the bodies flying around, furniture getting moved and ghostly people were just interesting to look at. I think the best game so far I played to set this sort of mood is Deadspace. But I did enjoy the game, read thru a bit of the intel as I went thru and really enjoyed the parts where you got to man a turret and power suit. I can’t tell you how much fun it was to jump in the suit and just utterly rip the environment and enemy soldiers up. When I got to the end of a killing spree in one of those things it was quite the disappointment to have to jump out.... |

Thoughts on Onechanbara: Bikini Samurai Squad |
![]() I didn’t really have much expectations for Onechanbara Bikini Samurai Squad other that wanting to see one of those weird Japanese import games focused on cute chicks fighting. In the intro cutscene seeing the two sisters getting ready to fight zombies made be laugh out loud. Heh, the character Aya got caught in the shower during this current zombie apocalypse and had to quickly don her cowboy hat, feather boa, swords and sport thong! The game controls were pretty bad, graphics reminded me of a Playstation 2 game and I just didn’t have a lot of fun with the boring battles and confusing map to get from encounter to encounter. Right off the bat I didn’t clean my sword, guess in the game a clean sword is important and if yours is too dirty it will get stuck in zombies? So I died a bit trying to figure that out and the game manual is worthless trying to figure out any details about the game. If... |

First thoughts on The Last Remnant |
|
My latest rental is The Last Remnant, I was wanting to kill a month before Resident Evil 5 and thought a JPRG would be a could choice to occupy my time. At this point I’m not sure if I am going to continue playing the game after about 10 hours in.
First off the game doesn’t look very good after playing my most recent JRPG Lost Odyssey. The texture pop in is really obvious on any scene and distracting. Also during battles there is so many characters that sometimes a active unit disappears and is invisible while taking his turn, also slowdown of the action happens in every turn. This is a Square Enix game? What really might do the game in for me is the tiny lettering that you have to read for all the dialogue and battles. There is some points I have to get right up to the screen to see what a weapons stats or what is being said or the ingredients for a upgrade. I must admit I have a decent 32 inch tube tv but come on can’t they make a option for big lettering?... |

Just finished Quantum of Solace for 360 |
|
Continuing my run of games I just finished my rental of Quantum of Solace, almost forgot about this game due to all the great games that came out near the end of last year. Since it came from Treyarch it was very similar to playing a call of duty game which the last couple COD 4 and COD WaW have been some of my favorites. Didn't take me too long to beat only about 8-10 hours at the most. It was great they were able to use the likeness of Daniel Craig to add that extra bit of likeness to the movie but near the end it started to distract me. His dead, expressionless face seemed so odd during some of the quick time events and even during a knife fight there would be no expression, nothing! Guess it wouldn't seem as odd if your counterpart to the fight had the same dead expression but they seemed to get a bit more emotion to show in their face.
But that was a small gripe. I did get a chance to play the online multiplayer which was interesting and still had plenty of people playing... |
