How can people stand the taste of whisky much less like it?
By el swordo 09-02-2012 06:41 PM

I haven't had a single whiskey that I would say I enjoyed the taste of. Johny Walker tastes decent but I wouldn't drink it over beer or wine. I have to mix jameson with something to make it drinkable. So tell me why some people love the stuff?

Traffic Accident Advice Requested

I was in a car accident the other day. I was turning left on a yellow and got in a collision in the middle of the intersection. I was issued a ticket for failing to yield. The ticket has a court date listed on the ticket. Is that mandatory? Or if I just sign it and mail or fax it to the court will they send me a fee or something in the mail to pay? I know my chances of getting rid of the ticket are slim to none so i really don't have any desire to show up in court especially since my car is undrivable and i would have to bum a ride not to mention taking the time off work to show up when i need all the money i can get for a new car.

The plague of money
By el swordo 08-11-2012 07:36 PM

Money in my opinion is the worst thing to ever happen to humanity. Back in the day people would live in small groups of hunters and gatherers. They would all work as a group doing what they had too to survive. Then all of a sudden somebody came up with the invention of money. It started off innocent enough. Sounded like a good idea at the time. It sure would make things simpler having a universal thing people held as valuable. But, the road to hell is paved with good intentions. Here is why I think that money is the worst plague upon humanity.
1. Overall Happiness is Diminished: In the hunter gatherer system people worked hard but at least the end result was obvious in that you got to eat. With money we just go to the grocery store and buy what we need. But how do we attain money? We trade our time and effort in exchange for money. I don't know about you but this makes me feel like a dog begging for scraps just to get by. How many people out... |

Computer Troubleshooting
By el swordo 04-05-2012 01:38 AM

I have an older desktop that I am trying to figure out what the problem is. It's an older dell inspiron desktop that is running xp. The problem is that when the computer is coming from either standby or completely shutdown is that it it comes on and shuts down before it even gets as far as the windows splash screen. I have found that unplugging the computer, removing cmos battery, plugging it back in, going into bios settings, leaving bios saving default settings, letting it try and reboot and then failing, unplugging from back of computer, replugging in, then hitting power button will let the computer boot into windows and it will run just fine until the computer is put to sleep or shutdown. The only things hooked up to motherboard are the cpu, onboard graphics, hd, and ram. At first I thought it was a powersupply issue for obvious reasons but the fact that it runs all day after boot leads me to not believe this. It could be cpu overheating but then why would it happen...

1 type of food for the rest of your life?

I have been watching a bunch of no reservations on netflix and it got me thinking. If you had to eat one type of food for the rest of your life what would it be? I would probably go with middle eastern food because it's hard to grow tired of grilled meat and warm pita bread.

Job Seeking Advice
By el swordo 03-30-2012 12:04 PM

I graduated in December and am looking for a job. I am applying for pretty much anywhere that is within a decent drives distance. I got a call from Sears hardware interviewing for a cashiers position. The thing is though it would be a pretty much a lateral move at this point. My current part time job pays like crap and gives me very little hours and pay. This would be aboiut the same pay but more hours and therefore more money. The thing is I didn't go to school for 4 years using my parents money to take a job that my buddies who didn't go to college have been doing all along. Also I don't want to just take a job when i'll pack up and quit the second something better comes along. What do you guys think? In this day and age can you still afford to be a little bit picky? PS also it's within a half mile of both Menards, Home Depot, and Lowes all of which for some reason decided to open right next to each other. And Sears probably won't be around much longer if kmart is...

Movie Critcs
By el swordo 03-13-2012 03:10 PM
|
|
Am I the only one who just doesn't give a
what they think anymore? A movie is $5 here if you go at a certain time during the day. I don't usually start work until 8pm so I can go. Anything else that I can't be bothered to see in theatres I can get from redbox for $1. My favorite genre of movies that I go see are comedies and critcs just seem to like comedies. I just saw Jack and Jill from Redbox and I actually enjoyed it. I knew what I was getting into before I rented it and even tried a free code because I wasn't sure it would be worth a buck but I laughed more than I did in any comedy that came out in the last year. If a movie is trying to be stupid and successfully achieves it don't you have to give it credit? You don't review Jack and Jill the same way you review Breaking Bad |

Sick of Political Correctness
By el swordo 03-04-2012 11:29 PM

The other week I heard about the ESPN writer getting fired because of a headline "chink in the armor" referring to a chinese basketball player. Obviously the guy wasn't intending to be insulting and it's a common phrase used all the
ing time. But, everyone has to get all uptight about it and make a big deal over nothing. I think it actually comes off as racist by us for treating the guy any differently then the rest of the nba players. Everywhere I look people are super politically correct and I'm just sick of it. |

I have a large tv and a computer monitor in the same room. right now my 360 and ps3 are both hooked up to the computer monitor. I really would like to get netflix and hulu on the bigger tv. What do you think the best idea would be some kind of hdmi switch, a long hdmi cable that i just pop in the back of my 360 when i want to watch netflix and hulu on the big tv, or a roku box? I kind of want to have amazon video on demand as an option. Any advice would be appreciated

Screen protectors am I crazy?
By el swordo 02-23-2012 05:56 AM
|
|
I absolutely hate screen protectors and can never get it right the first time. I already went through 2 trying to apply them right on the vita. Good thing I had gamestop credit and didn't pay any cash. I feel like I would have to shave every hair on my body, wear surgical gloves, and be sealed in a vacuum chamber with a oxygen tank just to get one on properly. My phone has one tiny scratch and that has been thrown in my pocket daily with coins and keys, stuck in my couch with metal frame, left on floor of dirty car as a flashlight etc. Am I the only one who thinks you should be able to use a $300 device in a reasonable fashion without investing in a stupid piece of plastic to avoid scratches?

Best Game You Almost Passed on?
By el swordo 02-19-2012 12:50 PM

I have never played a Rayman game before because I always thought they where for kids. Then I heard a podcast talking about Rayman Origins and how awesome it was. I rented it from gamefly and played it for awhile and returned it with the intention of picking it up on the vita. Well I didn't want to pay the price for vita version but got it for the ps3 instead at $20 and i have to say it's the best $20 I've ever spent on a videogame. It's absolutely gorgeous, plays well, and the music is amazing. So what about you guys what games did you almost pass on but then fall in love with?

I love the internet
By el swordo 02-16-2012 10:04 PM

Got a call from someone who saw my resume on monster. They didn't even bother mentioning the name of the company. First I tried sly dial to see if I could get their voicemail to get an idea of what the company is. Then I tried a reverse phone lookup to see who owned the phone number. The most info I could get about the number was the latitude and longitude of the phone number. I found a website that will give you the street address if you plug in latitude and longitude. I also found a website that does the reverse. I tested the first website with my current address to see if it was accurate and it was. Now I have the address of the phone number I can just drive past or maybe even get a good view from google earth. I never new the internet could be used for more than finding deals on videogames and looking at porn before. I don't know what I would do without it

PS Vita First Impressions
By el swordo 02-16-2012 06:37 PM
|
|
I was supposed to wait until the 22nd for the vita ,but got anxious and ended up at the midnight launch on Tuesday night. I figured I would share my experience with people in case you are on the fence about picking one up. First off what an incredible piece of hardware. The only complaint I have about it is the fact that the rear touchpad seems unnesccesary. Also the analog sticks may not be the best for aiming. Otherwise the games I've played so far seem to use the touchscreen well and don't seem gimmicy at all. In uncharted for example the touchscreen is actually my preffered method of navigation. The os on this thing is also pretty genius. It's somewhat like android or ios with all the games/apps laid out on the dashboard. Like android it has multiple homescreens for other stuff. When you hit the home button it shows everything you have open by moving left or right with the touchscreen. You quit out of a game or app by dragging the right hand corner...

How far would you travel for a job?
By el swordo 02-09-2012 04:09 PM

I have a job interview 55 miles from home tommorow. I am a recent college graduate living with my parents working a part time job. Since they are giving me 24 hours notice and called me within 24 hours of posting my resume I'm assuming they are in a hurry. My parents are thinking of retiring somewhere warm ,but don't want to sell the house in the current housing market. I might be able to get a good deal renting it from them. What do you think is that too far of a commute? Or if I'm offered the job would i be better off moving? All this hypothetical of course. Btw I live in northwest indiana near chicago. the job market isn't that great around here and I would probably have to commute downtown anyway. But, I would only have to drive 20 minutes to the train station and would be able to enjoy the train ride the rest of way. For this I would have to drive entire way

Dogs vs Cats
By el swordo 01-25-2012 11:25 PM

Why do people seem you have to like one or the other? I pretty much like them equally. I love my dog but if I didn't have a back yard to let her out and run around in and only had an apartment I would probably get a cat. Who wants to take a dog for a walk in the snow? Anyhow just thought I'd get your opinion on this.

Song Covers that are Better than the Originals?

What song covers do you think are actually better than the original version? The 2 that are most obvious to me are the Guns N Roses version of Knockin on Heavens Door as well as The Marilyn Manson Version of Personal Jesus.

Dear Proffessional Sports Please Get With the Times

I don't like paying for cable. I barely watch it anymore. I have spent more time burning through backlogs of tv shows on netflix then watching live tv lately. Sure you can get Sunday ticket on the ps3 but it's so damn expensive I could go to a bar and drink about 5 beers during the course of the game and still come out ahead. Nhl gamecenter looks awesome but you have to wait 48 hours to watch the game. I love hockey, but why would I want to watch a game 2 days after it airs? I have better things to do then watch a game I probably know the final score too and if I didn't I could find out in 30 seconds worth of googling? For soccer I have season tickets and for the other half the supporters groups have watch party for away games at a local pub, but that pub is out of range of reasonable public transportation time. I only really watch ota programming, a few comedy central shows, and occasionaly i put on history/discovery when I'm bored as well as 2-3 hbo/showtime shows. I don't...

The appeal of macs?
By el swordo 01-03-2012 10:16 PM

Macs to me seem to be the computer for people who just want to do simple everyday tasks like surfing the web, checking email, watching video, sync music to ipod. They look very well built and I'm sure some people prefer the interface. But, here is the thing. The target market for for macs is exactly the group that shouldn't be spending $1000 on a computer. Why would I pay $1000 for a mac when a $500 computer is more than capable of doing basic tasks nowadays? And what features of the os make it more appealing? Expose/Spaces? Both of which can me duplicated in compiz fuzion on linux. The file edit view at the top instead of per window is cool but harldy worth paying that much money for. Windows 7 dock/taskbar is far more functional than the osx dock in my opinion. Stacks is pretty cool but hardly worth paying the mac premium for. Photoshop/Adobe suite is also available on windows for people who need those kind of apps. Since windows has such a high market share...
