Note to self: Try not to eat this for breakfast again

Spanish skillet-
--Hash browns at the base --two kinds of cheeses melted in a thick layer on top --cilantro --tomatoes --fresh jalapenos --green peppers --onions --garlic --spicy chorizo chunks As if just reading that didn't move your bowels, it was topped with: --two sunny side up eggs and it came with a side of pancakes. of course, I had like 3 cups of coffee with it. Did I say try not to eat this again? 'cause I meant try to eat it every day to train my bowels. |

I think I like Batman Begins better
By ninja dog 01-23-2009 01:12 AM

and I don't think Heath Ledger gave an Oscar winning performance.
Maybe I have some kind of brain disease that makes me feel that way, but I just saw Dark Knight for the first time (which is also crazy) after managing to not read much about it and dodge most spoilers (nothing short of a miracle.) Of course I got tons of word of mouth, but my memory isn't that great and tonight I holed up and watched it with just about nothing to go on, except having seen the previous movie. I totally loved the story and thought it was 1000x more interesting, but Batman Begins was a pure thrill ride, where Dark Knight was a movie that couldn't decide if it was a thrill ride or a movie that wanted to make its audience think and reflect on sanity/insanity, good/evil, and other such dualities. For that, it hurt itself, since it was about 1/10th as thrilling as Batman Begins and while many interesting themes were presented throughout the movie, I wasn't convinced into considering... |

Random Shit From My Day - 1/14/09 Edition

I went shopping today and got some nice shit. Most of it ended up being flippables, but here's what I bought to keep:
--SF:Anniversary Xbox - $13 at GS --Splinter Cell Double Agent Xbox 1 - $5 at some pawn shop --Naruto Rise of A Ninja - $10 new at Kmart I also found the holy grail of Blockbuster Videos for flips....one day too late >_< All their shit was marked wrong, so they were either a non-franchise store or I missed a good opportunity. Oh wells, that's just thug lyfe 4 ya. The new CAGcast is great, I always forget how raunchy they are. Nick's insights into game writer life was nice, though kinda sad, since it sounded like an awesome job. His perseverance is admirable. I've started up countless times, usually with one good review or article under my belt, then the next review ends up not feeling right and I get disenchanted/realize that I'm not cut out for the job. I had a brief stint with Gamecritics.com... |

Random shit from my day - 1/7/09 Edition |
|
Every once in a while I just want to blog. One of those whiles is now.
So I did my final drive from Chicago, IL to Madison, WI (and back from Madison to Chicago) today. I had to move out of my apartment by 1/12, when the next guy is moving in. I got sick of cleaning fast and opted for the $55 maid service to scrub my bathtub of weird red residue. It wasn't blood, thankfully. Unthankfully, it's just Madison water, which has some rust in it or something. I've been drinking Brita water, so I think I protected my insides from becoming rusty. My goodbye to Madison was very uneventful, with the very sweet landlady wishing me the best of luck in law school and me assuring her that if I got in to UW-Mad law, I'd be back. Of course, the only way I'm getting into UW Law is if they give me some super special alumni privilege. And if I did get accepted, they couldn't pay me to live in that building again. In any case, nobody else I know was in town and I was in... |

Thoughts on Ubi's attempts to make Prince of Persia successful |
|
This was going to be another comment on my Sands of Time playthrough post, but I thought it warranted its own discussion, in case anyone else also overanalyzes gaming.
Now that I've had the series on my mind, I've been thinking that Prince of Persia is a weird animal for Ubisoft. They want it to be a sure-fire hit like Tom Clancy's BlahBLAHABKAHnkjdfiubapf, but it just hasn't happened. Their line of thinking to get this happen seems obvious when looking at the series evolution: Sands of Time is classic with a few flaws and is generally highly regarded by those who have played it, but it didn't sell well, so Ubi made it angsty and dark in WW. WW was not as well received by the general gaming community and as duplicated in any thread about PoP, it's considered the low point of the series. It got good reviews, but every single one mentioned their distaste for the new direction. So Ubi cuts back on the darkness...or rather,... |

Finally playing through Sands of Time |
|
I don't know why I felt like playing the Gamecube versions of the Prince of Persia games. I have a very nice gaming PC that eats these games alive at 60fps, but whatever, I chose GCN.
In any case, the playthrough is long overdue. I passed up on SoT in favor of BG+E on launch and made a couple half hearted attempts to get through it subsequently. I've always felt the *need* to play it though, since it supposedly has the best platforming of last gen. Happy to say I can believe it. The set pieces are amazing and fun to play. It's challenging, but not unforgiving at all. In fact, it's just a little bit more difficult then what I've played of the current PoP. Unlike the current PoP, there are some puzzles that require a bit of thought, which is nice. Only problem is the combat. Seriously. Farrah has killed me so many times! Anyway, it's nice to finally complete the third game in Ubisoft's golden moment-- when BG+E, Splinter Cell 1,... |

Underdog Successes of 2008 Part 1 |
|
This is the first part of a 4 part series. I was going to do all 4 at once and I had 3 entries done...it took a few hours, with all the hyperlinks and editing and such. Then I somehow closed the freaking tab in Safari and lost it all! I had this first part saved in Pages, so rather than give up, I'm posting it now and I'll promise the other 3 tomorrow.
__________________________________________________ ______________________ Say what you will about Gears of War 2, Fable 2, Metal Gear Solid 4, Call of Duty 5, Devil May Cry 4, etc., but the most interesting games are always the new franchises and ones that promise a new gaming experience that sequels to blockbusters usually don't provide. Sometimes these games generate considerable amounts of hype and end up failing to meet expectations. Other times, they become a huge phenomenon and get milked to death in subsequent years , to the point where nobody cares anymore. The following games saw a decent... |

In-Game IF YOU WANT TO PERFORM THIS FUNCTION YOU MUST QUIT THE GAME |
|
I fell for it too and it's all the more goofy now that we have in-game XMB. It really doesn't do much at all. It's nice to have the XMB's physical form pop up, but 90% of its functionality is missing. Sure, it'll be nice to be able to send formal confirmations/rejections when getting a game invite, but past that, this update doesn't do shit. Actually, I should say it adds another slew of items to the "Wait for *" pile. Now we get to wait for devs to add trophies and in-game soundtracks. We also get to wait for Sony to patch it again to so friend information loads faster. Lets not forget the wait for in-game voice messaging or in-game voice chat. All in all, it's clear Sony got caught with their pants down this gen. I don't feel I need to say it, but it's also clear they've got a lock on 3rd place. Even the... |

Triangle jumps and Kazakhistan's first and only appearance in a video game- STRIDER! |
|
I've been on an old school kick lately (this Mega Man 9 news has apparently changed my gaming habits altogether for the time being.)
I'm picking up the Capcom Mini Mix for the GBA tomorrow so I can replay the NES versions of Strider and Bionic Commando! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BJtcPfouuLw&feature=related Strider was the coolest shit ever, but nobody could get the damn triangle jump down. of course, it's easy to pull off today. But none of that mattered because the box art was so awesome: ![]() I have gone back to try and play it before, and no, it wasn't any fun. I'm going to try again though. And in any case, the Capcom Mini Mix has Bionic Commando. Interesting-- both games got ported from arcade versions which were too graphically advanced to do on the NES. They both were completely overhauled for the NES, going from Action/Arcade... |
