Evolution of FPS - Vol 1: Health/Shield Regen

From the times of Wolfenstein and Doom, to the current-gen Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 and the Halo series, the first person shooter genre has evolved dramatically. Lets take a look at one of the most identifiable traits of an old first person shooter; the health kit and its variants. In general, most shooters have a system of hit points (health, blood, life), and armor points (armor or shields). Older shooters like Doom and Duke Nukem 3D had the player refill their health or armor meters via medical kits or random piece of armor (kevlars, helms, etc) located in different places in each stage (or in some cases dropped by enemies). However, as the FPS genre evolved, health and armor recovery steered more towards automatic regeneration when not taking damage.
