Also, is there a way to delete other users? I bought a used system, and I want to get rid of the former user profile.

Awesome gaming night

By ChibiJosh 09-21-2008 01:39 PM
I stayed at my brother's house last night. His wife and baby were out of town at her parents' so on nights like that I usually go and hang out for awhile, sometimes spend the night, and we play video games and listen to music.

The night started out innocent enough with a little geometry wars. After half a dozen games of that, he mentioned that he heard good things about Castle Crashers, and asked if I wanted to check that out. I said sure. He told me that he heard it was like Gauntlet.

We had a history of Gauntlet. A long time ago, probably when I was like 8 or so, my first gaming "system" was a hand-me-down Commodore 64. One night, my brother and I played Gauntlet for like 6 hours and got to some ridiculous level before finally quitting. Another awesome gaming night in my life, that had just come up when I was talking to my brother about 2 weeks ago.

Anyway, at around 10 o'clock, we start this game. It's awesome, and the music is epic....

Somehow all of my classes are thermodynamics?

By ChibiJosh 08-21-2008 01:08 AM
It's the first week of school, and I'm through half of the week. It's my first semester of graduate school. I'm studying at WVU for a Master's in Chemical Engineering.

I'm taking 4 classes (which is one more than my advisor suggested, but oh well). They are:
  1. Advanced Thermodynamics
  2. Advanced Transport Phenomena
  3. Applied Statistical and Molecular Thermodynamics
  4. Partial Differential Equations
Fun stuff. I also have research credit hours in my schedule and an hours of seminar, but those don't particularly count.

Now, I know that I have two separate thermo classes, but somehow the other two are currently dealing with thermo as well. I know understand how people end up getting PhDs in thermo because it's impossible to actualy enjoy the subject. The only saving grace for #3 is that the molecular part deals with quantum mechanics which is really interesting, and I enjoy.

As for my thesis research, I'm working for the Department of Defense...

Best $25 I ever spent

By ChibiJosh 08-05-2008 02:54 AM
I have a degree in Chemical Engineering, so I consider myself a "trained professional." Don't try this at home.

I ordered an ounce of sodium metal on the internet a couple weeks ago, and it came last Thursday or so.

For those that don't know, sodium reacts violently with water:

2Na + 2H2O -> 2NaOH + H2 + lots of heat
H2 + lots of heat -> fire/noise + H2O(gas)

Tonight, a friend of mine came into town for a bit because he's moving back soon, and he brought some stuff from his parents' house to his new apartment. I decided to test out the sodium with him around. We went to a small stream, and chucked the first piece in (about a gram), and it just fizzed. I then decided to wipe off the mineral oil (because it's stored in mineral to make sure it doesn't come into contact with water in storage), and then chuck another piece in. It worked smashingly, and after the initial bang there were a lot of secondary pops for pieces...

Hospital Horrors and Medical Mayhem

By ChibiJosh 08-04-2008 02:21 AM
I've decided that I'm going to try to use this thing from time to time.

I went home to my parents' last weekend for a few days because I had to go to the doctor for a colonoscopy on Tuesday. I have to get one every year because I've had ulcerative colitis for more than 10 years which raises my risk for colon cancer.

The procedure itself is no big deal, it's the day before that's the real killer. Nothing to eat for 24+ hours. I spent the day downing orange kool-aid and blue Jello, and shitting strange colors.

Once that was over with and the next day arrived, I went to the hospital, and was stripped naked and given an IV surprisingly quick for once. About half an hour after waiting like that in a bed, I'm finally taken back and hooked up to a bunch of gizmos: heart monitor, blood pressure sleeve, oxygen, etc. Then syringes were pushed into my IV, a minute went by and I didn't remember anything for the next 4-5 hours (even though the procedure itself...
